This place is amazing! Very safe. Chad has cameras installed in all the rooms and bathrooms to make sure you are having a safe peaceful evening, it is very comforting to be watched over. Also most of the proceeds go towards his moon base, so you also feel good giving to a good cause. Great man and author, he has accomplished so much despite having a chip implanted in his brain by OUR OWN GOVERNMENT!

This place was great! Chad was an awesome host. Very welcoming and kind. He is even a published author of 5 books and! But all in all this place was a great place for the $$ and very kind to the planet:)!

A friendly place

My fiancé and I were in town for a wedding and wanted to stay somewhere cheap for a night. I guess it’s true you get what you paid for. We where very sketched out after seeing the place and meeting Chad. After we checked in and paid we left for about an hour came back got our stuff and found other lodging. Two days later he had drained our bank account with out a reason. I can not say this loud enough DO NOT STAY HERE.

This was my first experience at a hostel, and it was a lot different than I thought it would be. If you're thinking this is like a hotel where everything is immaculate and quiet, then you probably aren't the type of person who wants to stay at any hostel. A hostel is more like a friend's house that you crash at. ...where other 'friends of friends' happen to be crashing too. Sometimes you meet weird people who you share the hostel with. If this is a concern for you, then just get a private room and lock the doors. Chad gives you a code to the room so you can lock your stuff in when you're gone, too. 

Other than meeting occasionally questionable guests, as with any hostel, the Bessemer hostel was overall a charming place to stay. Some dust here and there (not much, they keep it pretty clean) and it doesn't look like much from the outside, but it was a fine place to stay and to sleep, and it's very cheap.

I did not find the owner to be 'creepy' as some other reviewers did, just a 'live-off-the-land' sort of hippie. He was nice and took time to show me around a bit, though he was busy. I admit he might be a bit eccentric, but I think some of the other reviews that found him hostile or creepy were unfounded. You'll notice they were written by people who left after like an hour. Guess their 'gut instinct' couldn't get around the want for a 'regular hotel' feel. To each his/her own.

First hostel experience, not bad. Better than expected.

Went on a vacation with my best friend and was looking for cheap lodging. The pictures are extremely misleading. To give you an idea, we both tested our mace to make sure it wasn't expired before walking to the door. Some creepy foreign guy came walking out of the woods and asked if we were there for "work trade". We said no, we had reservations for a room. He seemed a little confused and surprised to actually have a customer (gee I wonder why). In my line of work, your gut feeling means everything and mine was telling me that I was in for a midnight raping if I agreed to spend the night. We left to "get our bags" and drove away quickly. The owner called me an hour later leaving an aggressive voicemail asking where we went. Please listen to me and the other reviews for your own safety.

Absolutely terrifying

Okay I've stayed at hundreds of hotels and quite a few hostels in the US. This place seemed a bit hidden and eerie at first but it was charming in its own way. The local people in this town seem like very nice farmers and the place is next to Athens, OH where people party on the weekends like they're in Ibiza. Though the hostel itself is not as happening, modern, or top of the line as some of those in California, Boston or New York, if you consider where its at and what's its designed for (hiking and seeing nature), its great. Its like a house with all the modern conveniences (kitchen, bathroom, tv, beds, towels, bedding etc) that encourages day-trip hiking and getting reacquainted with nature. The host was wonderful and friendly. He seemed like a modest and intelligent man.

Interesting little place that's great for hiking...

Looking forward to my next stay.  If you're looking for a polished room near some amenities, there are plenty of hotels that cost more than $20.  If you want to be in the forest and save some money, check out this Hostel.
