We were not impressed with our stay at the Marina Grand Resort.  Yes, the balcony overlooking the marina is very pretty.  However, the room itself was not worth the price paid.  Obviously, you are paying for the location.  

The positives:  the hotel was clean, the beds were comfortable.  Its location is in a quaint town, which we really loved. 

The negatives:  the HVAC is loud when it kicks on.  We put the fan on constant but we still woke with a jolt several times throughout the night when the air conditioning kicked on. The fireplace is a nice addition; however, if you like a dark room, you won't find it here as the fireplace glows brightly all night long.   I was disappointed in a few other minor things which I expected better of for a "resort."  No hair conditioner in the bathroom; a very small bottle of shower gel for the two of us; no disposable cups to use for water or any other drink for that matter.  I do not trust any hotel's cleaning of glassware after seeing how many hotel cleaning staff will just wipe down a glass instead of washing it.  I would prefer a disposable plastic cup.  And, lastly, as others have stated, the shower is made for a short person.  I had to duck to rinse my hair.

Had the cost of the room been half the price, my rating would have gone up by one star.  It just wasn't worth the price paid (even on the off season).

Not Worth the Price

I visited this lovely establishment for a BFF weekend getaway. The hotel was clean, chic lobby and a helpful hotel staff. Hannah was welcoming & pleasant.
Our room & view was relaxing & peaceful.
I would visit again. 

Sweet BFF weekend getaway 

Wow what a hidden gem. Everything about this hotel is spectacular and the attention to detail was unreal. It is a beautiful, immaculate and well thought out hotel.  We will be coming back every year! 

Hidden gem 

Scheduled a girls getaway for a few days several months ago.  The resort has almost completed renovations. We had a suite and adjoining room. The space was perfect, the kitchen and sitting area was comfortable to congregate in.  The beds were comfortable. The kitchen well stocked. The resort seemed almost empty, yet we had someone staying directly above us (and walking around at 2 am).  Not sure why they didn’t spread us out.  The HVAC was a bit loud especially at night. 
The rooftop was a nice place to sit and watch the marina (we missed sunset by 5 min). 
The staff was helpful and responsive to needs. 
It was a bit pricey, (maybe be why it was not busy).  Overall, it was a nice 2 night stay, would stay again.

Girls getaway

Disappointing.

Rooms haven’t changed - so that’s good.

Not a fan of the front lobby redo. Can’t see any of the things for sale, no list of what’s available - conveniently hidden behind the front desk. 

Blindsided by the fact that the on-site restaurant, Bentwood Tavern, isn’t open for breakfast/lunch on weekdays, only during the weekends. Makes finding breakfast in New Buffalo a challenge. Oh, yes, I was told that I could “order” “Breakfast” at the Joe’s Coffeeshop replacement, but that this would be stuff like breakfast burritos, etc. 

I’m sorry, but I don’t consider breakfast-in-a-bag to be a suitable offering for a $400+/night hotel - I expect something cooked fresh on a plate.

Disappointing. 

What was once a surefire summer vacation reservation from us will likely go elsewhere next year. Was a nice multi-year tradition while it lasted. 

Words to Marina Grand and Bentwood: you’re letting the bean counters run things. It shows.

2023 Changes, aka “Improvements” are disappointing

This place was very interesting for sure.  All of the rooms have a view of the harbor which was beautiful.  If you have any physical disabilities, this is not the place for you.  Everything is VERY spread out. 
Rooms are nice and clean. You can tell the renovations are not quite where they will be.  No microwaves in the standard rooms. Fireplace was very neat.  I have it a four because I can see they are trying.

Still working on it.

Great experience and wonderful guest service. Checked on on the coldest day and was promptly checked in and given my keys. Room was a suite with a kitchen and warm fireplace. Was a quiet relaxing stay and would love to return when the warmer weather returns.


Clean and comfortable suite

This was our 1st stay at the Marina Grand.  We booked a 1 bedroom with 1.5 baths.  Daniel checked us in. Very friendly and accommodating. He found us a room on the 3rd (top floor as requested), but not available initially. Unfortunately there was an issue with the refrigerator, but Keenan kindly addressed the issue immediately and helped us move to an identical room down the hall.  Although there were families staying, it was very quiet on the 3rd floor.  The bed was comfortable, the balcony was nice. All balconies overlook the harbor.  The living/dining and kitchen area are very nice. Everything you need to cook is there. We went to Barney's for snacks and drinks. I think they had anything you could possibly want. The main bathroom was large and very nice, although dark even with all the lights on.  The half bath, while nice to have, had absolutely no place to even place a cup, let alone toiletries.  Very strange, very large sink with no counter space.  That really should be changed in my opinion.  The resort is not as close to the beach as I had hoped. I have stayed at an air bnb in New Buffalo in the past and that was much closer. The resort outdoor pool is so small, I was surprised. Not inviting in the least. Indoor pool looked okay. We did walk uptown and eat at the Salty Dog which was great.  We also took advantage of the complimentary coffee each morning downstairs in Joe's coffee shop.  We also had the house beignets, but they were a disappointment and tasted stale.  We also ate at Brentwood Tavern one evening.  Very busy, very crowded even during the week.  Overall, friendly staff, beautiful resort, but would probably stay somewhere else next time.  

Nice Resort

This was our second Marina Grand Resort Visit. The first was a year ago - which I never reported on TripAdvisor.

Last year we wanted someplace where we could plant our feet for a few days - to be near the water, to have room to relax, to be outside, to have outside opportunities. We didn’t want to make the committment for a full week stay anywhere, thus, we didn’t pursue VRBO/AirBB/etc. And we didn’t want a motel/hotel off the beaten path. We wanted to relax, be mostly outside - to maintain Covid protocols in a safe manner. 

GoogleMaps showed us Marina Grand, and while pricy - it had the things that we wanted. So we booked our four day stay last year - and our repeat stay this year - opting for the 1BR suite.

The balcony/patio overlooking the Marina is awesome. That breeze, oh, how I wish I could capture it for replay anytime. And the soft, but not too distant sound of the waves hitting the shore - that calming, soothing melody that melts through months of Covid anxiety, the daily rat race, traffic hassles - again, something I wish I could capture for replay anytime.

The room is large, luxurious, and practical. There’s a nice TV on the wall - but you know what - we didn’t turn it on once - that’s how disconnected we were. The patio/balcony is amazing both day and night. During the day you can enjoy the Marina traffic and activity - busy, but not overwhelming, and at night - you can enjoy the relative silence of the Marina - with boats making boaty-sounds like they’re supposed to - ropes banging on sailboats, etc. - just enough to remind you that you’re on the water. 

The bed - comfy, bathroom - nicely appointed.

The kitchen is ample and practical - affording the means to do your own cooking if you’d like. We always make a trip to Barney’s market to get our supply of snacks, food that we’re going to cook, beverages, and the all important Valpo Velvet ice cream from Barney’s. 

The on-site restaurant is wonderful - a scratch kitchen that usually is able to modify things to accommodate my wife’s food allergies. Be aware that it’s a busy/popular place - so be sure to book your reservations in advance - via phone if you’d like outside seating. Can’t get a reservation - no worries, you can order to go and pick it up in the adjacent Joe store/cafe for dining in your room or on your patio/balcony. The restaurant also has a nice breakfast/brunch offering.

If you’re from the Chicago area - consider a drive up to the Muskegon or even Ludington areas to catch one of the ferry services to Wisconsin. The Lake Express from Muskegon offers a pricy, but relatively quick trip to Milwaukee - where there’s lots to do and explore, and the SS Badger from Ludington offers a cheaper, more leisurely cruise to Manitowoc. If you do happen to head up to Ludington - you owe it to yourself to check out the smoked fish at Bortell’s Fish Market - located just south of Ludington. 

Front desk/check-in service was fast, friendly, efficient. 

Lots to do in the area. Do enjoy the small downtown - give the small businesses some business. Nancy’s is great for soft/hard ice-cream as well as hot dogs/burgers. Do pay a visit to the Stray Dog and enjoy their upstairs patio - nice place to catch a sunset. Do be prepared for a wait as it’s a popular place.

New Buffalo Beach is nice, but be aware that there are many other places nearby. Warren Dunes is simply awesome. We also liked Weko Beach in Bridgman - much more compact, easy to navigate during the weekdays. And for a slightly longer drive - there’s also the various Indiana Dunes parks.

The service can be a bit sketchy at times, but Danny at the front desk is thoughtful and incredibly helpful to the guests.

Even when they are complaining that the message box for the front desk is full.

Is it expensive?  Yes.  But you get what you pay for.
