On our way to a wedding in Vermont we stopped here to break the journey and see a little of the area - and we couldn't have made a better choice. The delightful owners made us feel welcomed and at home. The area was beautiful and the food in the local restaurants, as ever in the US, would have fed an army.

My friends and I stayed here in the two upper rooms recently. The rooms were cozy and very comfortable. One had a shower (Knowlton) and the other one (Forand) didn't so we all took turns using the shower. The Forand room has a large soaking tub with a hand-held shower but you have to hold it with one hand. It's not really set up to stand in. The Forand room is great for two friends sharing because it has a mini-bedroom inside it separated from the rest of the room with a sliding door. This allows each person to have their own privacy within one room. Very unique and very cute.

I stayed in the Knowlton room, which was very comfortable and had a good size bathroom with a nice vanity and a walk-in shower (no tub). Very clean and nicely decorated with a pretty bed.

The breakfast was absolutely delicious with homemade scones, etc. On our first night they left out the best chocolate cupcakes I have ever had, and another night there were peanut butter cookies. You can make a cup of tea anytime.

Jack is a blacksmith and his craftsmanship is displayed throughout the house with a handmade chandelier, coat racks....he even made the gorgeous beds. Marilyn makes wonderful floor cloths that decorate the floors throughout.  They are really unique.

The grounds were lovely, though we didn't spend much time there. One thing to note: The parking lot is below the house and the outside stairs are a bit steep so may not be suitable for everyone. (Look at the outside photos to get a better idea.)

I headed away for a relaxing weekend with my wife and found this gem. While the location is tricky to get to this is what makes it so enticing. The room was warm and cozy and the breakfast was wonderful. The inn keepers were friendly and not invasive. They even have cookies and tea available in the evening to welcome you back. If I was in the area again I would go back!

Great! Just what I was looking for!

I was on my way to Vermont in my old Jaguar XK120, and booked a night at the Village House in Sutton Mills. First of all, Sutton Mills is a very small, quiet town with no restaurants, gas stations, 7-Eleven's, etc. It's just a quaint tiny mill town straight out of a postcard. This might be a drawback for some as you need to drive about 5 minutes away to New London for dining/shopping. But I found it really pleasant to stroll around the town without worrying about traffic and listening to the nearby river that used to power the local mills.

 As I pulled up to the Village House, the owners were already half way down the granite steps to greet me. They generously offered to let me put the old car in the garage for the evening by parking one of their cars outside. That warm welcome set the tone for the entire stay. The house itself is quite old, well restored, and creatively decorated. The husband is a blacksmith on the side (he has a complete shop/forge in the barn adjacent to the house. Many of the lamps and other fittings in the house were made in his smithy. The wife, very charming by the way, makes beautiful "painted rugs," something I've never seen before but which I found fascinating.

The rooms are very nice and all the furnishings are in character for the area and house. This is not a 4 star hotel. Don't expect white marble baths so clean you can eat off the floor. This is a clean, well maintained, charming 19th century house that offers cozy, quaint, yet comfortable lodging for people who want a change from the Hyatts and Westin's. It does have A/C in the form of a window unit, so perhaps its not the best place during a heat wave. However, up in this part of New Hampshire it's generally the case that even the hottest day will cool down to a very comfortable temperature around sundown.

Highly recommended for a year round romantic get away or something different when you're up in NJ skiing. Wonderful property, great hosts. Thank you Jack and Marilyn!

Wonderful New England B&B

We stayed at The Village House at Sutton Mills for only one night on our way to Vermont and wished we could have stayed longer. This little B&B is very charming and the hosts, Marilyn and Jack, are absolutely delightful and have thought of everything. Breakfast was delicious and the inn keepers are a great source for local information including area restaurants. If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful retreat, this is the place to stay. We can't wait for our next long weekend there this summer!
