In December 2019, I made a reservation for July 24-27, 2020 for 4 of us to stay in a 2 bedroom cabin. We were planning to attend the Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Cooperstown. I paid in full when I made the reservation.  Due to the pandemic, the induction ceremony was cancelled and the Red Carpet Inn On the Lake did not open for the 2020 season.  On August 31, 2020, I sent them a letter asking about a refund for the amount paid but I have heard nothing from them. I have not received a phone call or a reply to my letter and I have not yet been refunded for the $937.44 I paid in advance.

Very Unhappy

Check in was one of the most pleasant ones we have ever had by a very friendly and outgoing young lady. The thing to remember is that this is and OLDER motel from back in the day and not up with all the updates it needs. Room carpet was quite worn but clean (as my white socks verified) Bed was comfy and no breakfast. was provided. Room rate is about 10% overpriced but yey it is NY.

Okay for one night.

Boy, when you read the reviews on this place you really do not know what to think. Here is my perception.  The cottages down by the water look tired. The room that I stayed in was fine when you consider the other properties in that area. The room was clean but the rug is stained. The bathroom was fine with adequate soaps and shampoos. The internet was strong but there was no workspace for a business traveler. Lots of dresser space but no closet. Don’t over think this place. It was fine when you price compare in the area.

STAY AWAY!!! We had the WORST experience I have ever had with any hotel/motel.... We needed a room for move-in day for college and this was all that was available.  He were at dinner before check in and got a phone call that said they were closing at 10:00 a.m. So we ran over there and checked in ..... got back in car and drove to this run down shack near the lake.  The carpet was filthy, the random furnishings were strewn all over the living room area.  The beds in the second bedroom were stripped, dirty blankets in the closet, no pillows.  The smell was horrific.  The kitchen cabinet had an old KFC container in it.  The bathroom sink was coming off the wall........  need I go further.  Mind you, the office was closed, so we stuck it out and got a very nominal amount of sleep.  Fast forward..... complaint to booking.com and we received a refund.  Will be staying at a 3 bedroom Airbnb for family weekend..............

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER

It was the 4th of July weekend and we attended a wedding. We originally booked a hotel for the wedding but decided to go earlier than we intended. All hotels are booked, stumble upon this motel in expedia, I should have checked the reviews.ugh. It was the filthiest room ever...just look at the pictures...

FILTY

This is not a 5 star hotel by any stretch, but it is a great place to stay.  It's affordable, within easy driving distance of Oneonta and Cooperstown.  The lake side views are beautiful (in June as I write this).

Arrived Friday 5/17/19 and departed Sunday 5/19/19
My son and I have been turkey hunting in the area for years and needed a room for the weekend. Due to a college graduation this particular weekend with numerous booked hotels in Oneonta I decided to book with Red Carpet Inn on the Lake. Upon arriving at 500pm or so we were greeted by a kind ,friendly and helpful woman. We were told where to park and she directed us to our room located close to the motel lobby. What a pleasant surprise as we entered the room...a good sized clean  room w 2 double beds .nice clean bathroom with plenty of hot water..functioning heat and AC ..nice television w remote...great view of lake ...great location close to Oneonta for restaurants, stores, supplies etc.. .and came at a reasonable cost...we couldn't ask for more...we will definitely keep the motel in mind for future hunting getaways...

Better Than Expected....thumbs up !

The pictures and pricing online definitely gave it appeal and an idea of absolute breath taking serenity, NOT SO!!! Upon checking in our room it was not cleaned.  Sheets were dirty (USED), floor was full of left over I don't knows and full of stains and the furniture  was just the same.  I have No Idea when the last time the bathroom was actually cleaned  as left over used toiletries were left behind.  The bathroom floor, shower, toilet and sink were full of left over dirt, build up and I don't know what.... Upon returning to the front desk and advising the owner/manager he yelled at the housekeeper in front of us and they continued to argue in front of us in I have no idea what language.  Being a Holiday week there was nothing available else where.  We  went back to our room and they vacuumed and changed our sheets.  The housekeeper apologizes as she has only been in the US for 20 days.  As our week progressed we noticed that it appeared to be a family run business of many generations living on site.  Early mornings consisted of slamming doors, loud talking video calling and a family van that pulled in and out of there at all hours honking the horn each time.  So if you were looking to get away from the city and enjoy the serenity of the country side this is not the place!!!  I don't mind old hotels but cleanliness is a must!!!!

DISGUSTING!!! Don't Do It!!Definatley had a flash back of a scary Halloween Movie!

My niece & family came from CA to visit. The room they had reserved, was not ready or perhaps not even there. The carpet on the floor was full of stains, from what we do nit know, the room was musty smelling, the bed line was damp, found somebodies clothes under the bed. All this in the first 30 minutes.Columbus Day weekend in Cooperstown, nothing else to be had. Manager was rude, arrogant & stupid. Cleaning staff had no clue how prep a room. Breakfast was a joke: box of cereal, stale milk, empty coffee pot. And they argued with us about this. Several vans pulled in during the wee hours, unloaded loud people & left. Same vans came in morning honking horns  & took loud people away. This was repeated for several nites. You would be better off sleeping in your car

Should Be Torn Down

We chose these cabins to 1) have a number of families together, 2) have  access to nature as opposed to freeways or shopping centers. To be precise, we booked under "Knott's Cottages" at Goodyear Lake, which are a series of cottages/motel on the lake, down the hill from Red Carpet Inn in Oneonta (where management is located).  

The lake was beautiful and enjoyable. We swam, though we found out later that is perhaps not sanctioned. Had great barbeques by lake. 

Cottages are exceptionally small to Ok in size, But we knew that from the photos. Beds OK. We had septic issues, but management did address that eventually. 

TiPs: Insist on "deep clean" housecleaning every day. Insist they vacuum, leave enough towels, every day.  Otherwise, they will assume you might not want to be bothered and will skimp on housecleaning.   If you consider this a hotel, rather than an Air BnB, then communicate the housecleaning standards you expect. 

Last impression: I wouldn't trade the experience, even with the septic and space and housecleaning challenges, for the chance to be on a lake in Upstate NY in July.  Gave a great retreat for all for the baseball tourneys we were attending. But consider this more upscale camping than glamping.  Know what you value, and you will not be disappointed.  Mariott? No.  Upstate upscale camping? Yes.   

Lastly, the advertising made it sound like swimming was included, but at the site it seemed this isn't exactly so.  We swam anyway, after checking that there seemed to be no reports of dangerous water issues in Goodyear Lake.  Be sure to wear watershoes as there are some critters or rocks in the lakebed that can cut your feet if you're not careful (I had no troubles but a few kids got cuts that needed bandaids.)  

If you are a stickler for rules, you might want to ask about swimming rules ahead of time....  don't rely on impressions of the brochures for accuracy. 

If you are attending baseball tourneys in Oneonta or Cooperstown, this is a good location... about 15 minutes away from either tournament. It has the advantage of housing a number of families in the same location, if you get organized and book ahead of time. Again, better for the shared experience or access to nature than for a traditional hotel stay.  Want a spa? This ain't your spot. Want an experience? Yes.
