This hotel is so unique, looks like a castle from the outside.   What made the experience was the staff, everyone was incredibly nice and helpful.  It was an extremely cold January weekend in Newport and no weddings were scheduled at Ocean Cliff while we were there.  In fact, we at times felt like the only guests of the 24 room hotel.  We were pleasantly surprised by an upgraded room when we checked in.  The king suite was large although sparsely decorated.   The bathroom could use some updating and it is a bummer that you can't control your own heating and cooling.  Breakfast the first morning was brought to our room (made our selections the night before) and the second morning was a continental buffet set up in the restaurant.  Loved the cookies and hot apple cider in the lobby and the fire place sitting room.  Will definitely visit again in the off-season.

Ocean Cliff Review

Overnight Guest – Make sure you understand your reservation - Clarify & Communicate when reserving hotel room.

You can’t assume what Website says is accurate for your bookings:
Guest rooms with “modern conveniences and stunning oceanfront views “. I booked four rooms for a total of seven nights combined. For all four rooms this was certainly not the case. 

Guest rooms are “unique” – yes that is true.  Guest rooms with “Marble Bathrooms” – This was NOT true for all four rooms.

Third floor historical queens “boast best water views” – yes, if you crawl on floor around bed to look out the single window - in one of the rooms. All three Bathrooms - not marble, old… plus extremely tiny … and one bathroom’s exhaust fan didn’t work and maintenance was not able to fix it over the two nights booked.

All rugs in all four rooms – look and feel of an old ballroom rug. 

The pictures on website look so much nicer. 

Deluxe King: (I booked for three nights)

Bathroom – Very old and just not nice. There was a step up after you walk in by the edge of the sink with no visual differentiation — this is an accident waiting to happen.  Vanity was Formica, not marble and an old drop-in sink. Caulking awful. Tub/shower very small / slanted/ difficult to get in / no place to put your hands and with a plastic partial slanted wall. Drain by the toilet had a broken open metal piece that if you stepped on wrong would have cut you. 

Room itself - no chairs to sit, yet there was plenty of room to have two comfortable chairs. A couch only that could sit only one person, as window air conditioning unit blows directly behind your head. A larger room, but only one small ceiling light and two small wall lights on either side of bed within the out cove. No lights in the dark deep unique old closets and no lamps at all on bureau or to use to read by the couch. I had to ask if they had a lamp to use. No pictures/artwork on the wall. This room has a lot of potential if updated decorated/remodeled/painted.

Three Historical queens (type of queen not mentioned on the phone at original booking). Very small rooms. Similar comments as king room but certainly a little better. However, we were not made aware that the tiny private bathroom was not actually in each room until our arrival. Bathrooms are actually down the hall and around the corner.

And one point about continental breakfast - this was OK but why do you start breaking down what’s available to eat at 9:20. ( Hours 8 to 9:30am ) Plus why not use dishes ( versus cardboard ) and silverware ( versus plastic ) which would certainly be better for the environment.

Key issue is one of communication… The expectation from both looking at the website marketing descriptions and the expensive cost of each room - was certainly not met. And when booking the four rooms seven months before our stay - the person on the phone should have articulated the room situations - especially for those rooms that did not have a bathroom in the room, but down the hall. The only time that happened was on check in: “we want to make you aware that your bathroom is down the hall”. Also website says A/C, but some rooms have central air - but you can’t control the temperature and others have just loud window units.

It’s a terrific ceremony and reception venue but not good at all for a very expensive overnight.

The staff was certainly very nice, friendly and helpful. 

If it wasn’t for the beautiful family wedding we attended, this stay would have been so very disappointing.

Clarify your overnight stay expectations at Booking.

We really enjoyed staying at OceanCliff! The safari room for cocktails and dinner was excellent. I recommend the Flatbreads. Our room was lovely, very clean. Also the friendliest Reception on arrival and departing. Can’t wait to visit again. 

Loved our stay.

My boyfriend booked this hotel in December and made dinner reservations at the restaurant. As we pulled in the parking lot just before checking time, the front desk employee called and said they were overbooked and had no room for us. He spoke with the manager on the phone, she was not on the premises, and the best she could do was give us a room the size of a closet with the bathroom down the hallway. I did not know at the time but he had planned to propose to me there so imagine how he felt. We found a room the BRENTON HOTEL in downtown Newport that is brand new and fabulous. We were greeted with glasses of champagne and he did propose to me on the rooftop overlooking the ocean. Upon hearing our news the staff surprised us with a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. The Brenton is where we will stay from now on. Cannot be any more disappointed in the Ocean Cliff.

Proposal gone wrong

We came here for our 9 year wedding anniversary & it was perfect! A very romantic setting with a historical touch to it. The outside view & landscaping was breathtaking! I would definitely recommend this stay & hope to visit again.

Charming & beautiful

We checked around online and chose Ocean Cliffs Hotel and Resort. We are delighted with our choice. This is a spectacular venue. The views from the deck are among the best New England has to offer. The complimentary breakfast includes croissants, bagels & muffins. There was a delicious fruit salad. Also they had yogurt and dry cereals.

My mom and I had a fantastic stay at this gorgeous hotel.  Staff were super friendly and cheerful and the place is just stunning.  Each morning we had a fantastic breakfast overlooking the ocean.  Our room was spacious and quiet.  We would definitely come back.  It was reasonably priced and you got the feel of staying in a Newport Mansion.

Fantastic Stay

This Inn is at a beautiful spot with wonderful water views. The lawn slopes down to the water with Adironack chairs to enjoy. The rooms were clean and spacious and nicely furnished.  We have stayed here several times.  The staff was friendly and helpful.

We wanted to have lunch at the restaurant when we arrived but due to prepping for the wedding we were told that there was a limited menu/  There were four items on the menu that day/

We have only stayed there during the week so have never visited when a wedding was scheduled but there was a Monday wedding when we stayed.  After dinner in Town we cane back hoping to enjoy sitting outside under the stars.  We did do that but it was not the quiet evening we hoped for due to the music from the wedding.  Also the music form the weeding at The Inn at Castle Hill was very loud.  The next morning we were awakened at 6 15 as the staff was putting away the tables and chairs from the wedding.  

Breakfast was ok - bagels, cereal  croissants, fruit. yogurt cups.  It was self serve set up in the bar area,  On previous visits there was table service for breakfast which was very nice.

We will stay here again but only of there is no wedding scheduled {nothing against weddings per se}.

The review makes it sound like we did not enjoy our stay - we did - but is was not quite the quiet getaway we anticipated.

Nest time we will inquire if there are weddings or other events scheduled and plan accordingly.

Perhaps the website could indicate on the reservations page that there is a special event happening for the requested reservation dates/

Fantastic Location

It is a shame that a beautiful and historical property has been left by the wayside with untidy, unkept, very dirty bathrooms and kitchen area, outdated and uncared for, and is mis-marketed. Our room had a very old, uncomfortable and lumpy bed.  Our bathroom had mold growing the sink. Hotel - Resort?!  Breakfast nor lunch cannot even be ordered no breakfast, nor lunch  nor dinner on off nights.  When my husband and I ordered the lobster salad sandwiches and requested black pepper - it was served in a plastic Job Lot bottle.  When I told the front desk manager that I had forgot my charger cord and asked if the "Hotel Resort! had one that I could borrow, he advised me to driver to Providence - 90 minutes away - to get one.  We found one at the nearby Walmart.  The food in the restaurant was the worst ever.  Limited menu, and greasy everything.  They could not even get french fries right.  My husband’s french fried were hot on the outside and frozen on the inside.  Same with the bread.  Our experience was not worth the sticker price.  The wait staff in the restaurant were friendly but not what you would expect at at a "Hotel Resort."  From the hallways to the bedrooms, -decorated with cheap broken frames around paper posters-, to the rugs on the stairway - really need changing -  to a jungle -theme Safari room that smelled of bad food- the place needs major repairs.  Very sad that a landmark venue has been so neglected and mis-marketed to prices that do not warrant the stay.  


Unkept,  Disheveled, Very Dirty, Uncard & Outdated Property

My husband and I usually stay in town - but with cover we didn't want to really walk around - so we stayed Ocean Cliff - it was wonderful - in the day we sat outside and facing the water - I ordered drinks and read a book - very relaxing and just what we both needed - we love the restaurant  and they gave us a light breakfast. In the summer its a great place to stay - in the winter we stay in town- however we still eat there.  We been going to Newport for over 30 years and know it well - so we are happy to say we will be coming back to Ocean Cliff.
