My cousin and I stayed while hunting a week. The staff had brought us to go breakfast each night so we would have for the next day knowing we would be out and about before they had breakfast ready. It was very nice to have nice comfortable room after a long day of hunting the mountains. Upon request fresh towels and trash taken out, other than that they dont mess around in your room and everything stayed secured and safe. Thank you all again for a very nice stay.

Pleasant stay, very nice and helpful staff!

I've stayed here twice now and each time has been amazing. The workers are extremely kind and always helpful with anything you need. There is a hiking trail with a beautiful view behind the cabins and the breakfast is great! Will definitely be staying here again!

Amazing Cabins and kind workers!

We found the room to be spacious, but very dated.  Bedding was clean but stained.  Parking was close to our room.
Breakfast was included.  Variety of items to choose from, all served wit COVID-19 precautions.
Best part of this motel-the staff!  Very friendly, warm and helpful!

Just okay!

I’m astounded by all the food reviews! Maybe the cabins are nicer but it’s hard to believe how many people have such low standards.  we are feeling more than a little ripped off after paying $200/night for a $59/night motel.  Yes, we knew the reservation was non-refundable when we made it but we did not know what a sh*thole the place is when we reserved it!  We asked to see the room before committing and were told “well it’s non refundable” (so why bother, right?).  They obviously know what a dump it is or they wouldn’t feel the need to trap you into the reservation with the no refund rules.  Lady at the desk is super nice and deserves a nicer motel to work at! (And be sure and check out the owners responses to all their neg reviews- they are actually delusional enough to believe their victims are at fault). We forfeited the money for the 2nd night and paid an additional $450 to another nicer place for a total of $650 to not have to stay here again.  (I tried to be a little nicer in the google review but their response kind of set me off so I decided to let it all out here.

$200/night for a $50/night motel.  Bates motel would have at least provided entertainment.

The room was clean and the staff very helpful and responsive to my requests. I’d stay here again without a doubt. Breakfast was hot and tasty. Good amenities in the room; microwave and fridge. Quiet spot.

Comfortable Hotel

My family has stayed a number of times, over the years, at the High Country Lodge.  The cabins are always clean, comfy, well stocked, and quiet.  The staff, for years and years, have been helpful, kind, and outgoing to make sure the guests are accommodated.
  
Things are changing, though, and even though they may be little things that  are changing, they are still important.

My daughters, the first morning after arrival, were the first to be disappointed when we discovered the breakfast is rather weak and lacking.  The website boasts a full breakfast with all the usual options, but instead there was a lukewarm breakfast offered, which someone stated they cooked at their home and then brought in, with the only other option being cold cereal. Then, when asking for milk from behind bar, for the cold cereal, the person helping asked why I needed two cups of milk and stated she would only give them if I knew for sure they would get used.  

The bar added for evening drinks seemed like a nice touch, until my wife and I stopped in to get a nightcap and walk the property.  It was silly for me not to ask the prices before ordering but never again will I pay $12 for a single-shot, low-brand whiskey & coke.  My wife ordered a whiskey-sour, which was sadly the same size as mine, and as charged $14.  It seems like a convenience but not even close to worth the cost of the drink.

The grass, in the common area behind the lodge, was dead and over-grown with weeds.  Unfortunately sad to see since the last time we were there it was mowed, green, and there was a family having a picnic outside.  The hiking trail, which extends behind the property on a hillside looking over the valley, has become overgrown with trees, weeds, and branches; it used to be something we did every morning but only did it once on this trip because it’s hard to find the path in some places and we didn’t want to get beat-up each time by all that’s overgrown.

I guess I could go on, but the rest seems like small things.  But it’s the small things that really matter to me, and my family.  It wasn’t surprising to see the owners have it for sale;  there doesn’t seem to be the personal touch that used to be present. Without that, people start moving on.

Just like us.  Sadly, this last trip will be the end of an era at the High Country Lodge for our family.  We are going to continue to come to Pagosa Springs, because as I said we have been going there for years and love it, but when we visit and stay, again, we will be moving on to greener pastures.

Good, but not the same.

High Country Lodge was very nice, we had a great 3 night stay while in Pagosa looking for a home.  Bill at the front desk is so nice and helped me when we booked a BAD hotel in town.  He got me a room for the last 3 nights of our 4 night stay at the High Country Lodge.  The rooms are typical hotel rooms that could be updated with new bedspreads etc but were clean and comfortable.  Breakfast is a hot breakfast served by staff which is a very nice touch.  Our coffee pot didn't work--could have used more accessible coffee in the mornings but everyone was very friendly and the location is great.  Saw deer right outside while sitting on the benches enjoying the Colorado weather.  Thank you for a nice stay!

Great place to stay

This place exceeded every expectation, and put all other motels, nay, even hotels and resorts, to shame!

The service was amicable and politely casual. You always felt like you were chatting with friends. Additionally, everyone I spoke to was very knowledgeable of the area and proud to help me navigate it, whether that be for food recommendations or hiking trails.

The rooms were kept immaculate, not to mention the décor was phenomenal all throughout. Large tapestries of mountain wildlife adorn the halls of the lobby, and paintings and photographs of beautiful wild stallions hung in our room. The entire main building was this beautiful log cabin architecture, which really gave it a homey and comfortable feeling. 

Being right off the main road, you are very close to everything to do in and out of town, but if you don't feel like going anywhere, a pond less than 50ft from the main house offers pretty decent fishing. Not to mention, the stargazing at night is incredible.

I only got to stay for one night, but I wish it could have been a whole week. If I'm ever back in Pagosa, I will definitely return.

Best Motel Ever

Only 2.5 miles from town makes this a great location.  Rooms are somewhat dated but clean with newer furniture and carpet.  Wonderful breakfast, beautiful grounds and very helpful staff.  I’d stay here again if I go back.

Great Value and Location

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at High Country Lodge. Was concerned that we were a few miles from town, but it turned out to be a great little spot for us. Room was comfortable and had everything we needed. Bill was very accommodating and they made sure to offer as many amenities as they could with the hot tub, the bar for drinks, and a decent breakfast in the morning. Would definitely stay here again.
