Tremendous story on all the soldiers that gave their lives in the Civil War.  They came from the Maine area and are notarized in this historic museum and lodge located at Peakes Island off Portland.  The curators are very knowledgeable and can teach you the whole history.

The 8th is a great places to stay if you’re in the Portland area. It is a civil war era historical building that is right on the water and can’t be beat for its atmosphere. The rooms are bare bones and you share the kitchen, dining area, common spaces and restrooms with other guests. It really makes it feel less like a hotel and more like a small community. It’s hard not to get to know the hosts and other guests here and that is what makes it a one of a kind experience. If you’re in Portland don’t miss this perfect rustic adventure!

A great historic building with rustic charm that makes you feel like family.

What an amazing place. I was travelling with a friend who take care of the details, bookings etc. She booked the 8th Maine based on views and location having no idea that I was a history geek. Staying at the Lodge was an immersive time travel experience. I LOVED it! However, it's not for everyone; shared bathrooms and lack of amenities, so fussy people don't bother. But the place is exceptionally clean, the views are amazing, coffee in the morning, kitchen facilities if you'd like to cook, and the hosts Dawn and Bill are lovely. Staying here will always be one of my best travel experiences. For those who love to travel to truly experience the world, this place is a must.


Wonderful Expereince

We loved this place!  While it's old and funky/rustic with shared bathrooms, it is not for everyone.  It is not luxurious at all.  But it is IMMACULATE and a great value for staying on this beautiful island.  The lodge is full of Civil War history, the views are amazing, and the hosts are incredibly helpful, knowledgeable and accommodating.  It's apparent that they love what they do.  We can't wait to return and highly recommend 8th Maine if rustic appeals to you.

This is an old lodge run by a historical non-profit organization, and so, it's rustic in some way, rough in others, but ... you can't beat the old-time plain style charm, nor sitting on the porches enjoying the ocean view, the sun, the mist, the sounds of water crashing on rocks.
The website gives accurate descriptions. The majority of rooms are on the second floor, off a long airy painted wood plank hallway with remnants of old Linoleum (hey, Linoleum holds up!). This floor has a women's common bathroom with a 2-sink vanity, 2 toilet stalls, a clawfoot tub stall and a rather snug shower stall. The first floor has a similar men's common bathroom.
The eating and kitchen area is in the basement, which has a few windows and a walk-out door. The main dining area has numerous tables, and a countertop around a good portion of the room with individual cooking areas. Off of this are a rabbit warren of other rooms with the refrigerators, the sink area, and cupboards with pots and pans, dishes, glasses, mugs, etc. You won't want for anything if you're cooking. It's not super clean; it's old. If you're not fussy, or if you've camp cooked, this will suit you just fine.
The rooms are pleasantly spartan, with clean decent bedding. No TV. But the wireless was fine.
The common first floor lodge room is huge with loads of rocking chairs, a ping pong table, a cupboard of games, a piano, shelves of history books on the Civil War.
I did one night with a bike and a knapsack, cooked a simple dinner and breakfast. I slept to the sound of the ocean, with filmy curtains blowing in the breeze.
There are steps up to the porch, a grand staircase up to the rooms and a narrower set of stairs down to the dining/kitchen area. The bathroom toilet and shower stalls require some maneuvering (read: they are not huge). The rooms, however, are a spacious enough depending on how many beds you choose.

Simple, no frills, quaint charm, best location for an overnight

The place is rustic and the bathrooms could use an upgrade, but it's a lot cheaper  than most places on Peak's Island or in Portland. I'm not sure it was the place for us, but if you're looking for a unique getaway...

Very quiet and relaxing.

Not sure where to begin, this is just the coolest place to stay in the history of places to stay! Really unlike anywhere else we have ever been, 8th Maine is a real treasure. You must be okay with shared bathroom facilities but as long as you are, don’t hesitate to stay here. Our hosts were so informative and we chatted for a long time about the history of the property. Right when we got there Dawn showed us the whole property, how things work, what to do, where to go etc. We had brought a can of bread because we heard that was a very “Maine thing to eat” and Bill gave us some tips on how to eat it and also gave us some butter for it. The room was flawlessly clean, I was so surprised at how they could get an old room like that so spotless! What stole the show was the views and the waves crashing against the rocks. About a 15 min walk from the ferry to the lodge, some of it was uphill so keep that in mind. There was also a cab waiting at the ferry when we got off so that’s an option if you don’t bring a car and don’t want to walk.

Pretty much the coolest place ever

Just back from a relaxing mid-week stay at the 8th Maine Regiment Lodge and Museum on Peaks Island, Maine. It’s a comfortable  walk from the ferry (less than a half mile), although a cab is available at the cab stand. Fun facility and excellent hosts! We hope to be back next year!!

Best views on Peaks Island

I've been going to Peaks Island and staying at the Eighth Maine Regiment Lodge for almost 30 years. My husband first visited the 8th Maine in 1941. His uncle was a member of the 8th Maine Regiment! Our family tradition. Adults love it there. Our kids love it there. And THEIR kids love it there. It's a one-of-a-kind place. The island is devoid of everything touristy -- no zip line, no golf course, not even a movie theater! A picturesque island where there's nothing to do and we are NEVER bored! I call it glorified camping out -- camping out with a roof -- a different approach to vacationing -- where we set aside our busy life and adapt to island lifestyle.  Dawn, the Host, goes out of her way to ensure that our visit is always beyond enjoyable. We are already looking forward to going to Peaks next year.

On the way home, I began a trip "report" which grew to 10 pages, complete with pictures.

Peaks Is. ME -- My Happy Place!

The whole place was overall really not so well kept. The floors were untidy, the bath was horrible (the kids did not take a bath for 4 days). I get that it's not a five-star hotel, but housekeeping is mandatory in a shared space like that.
