We love the 1774 Inn!  Sarah and Stuart are friendly and welcoming hosts.  Staying with them doesn't feel like staying at a hotel as much as it feels like staying with old friends.  We've visited a few times, and each time it's foggy or rainy, but the views from the lawn are still fantastic.  Breakfast was incredible....locally sourced and intentional food, some even from the Inn's garden.  We loved getting personal recommendations for hiking and breweries in the area.  We received instructions on what to expect for COVID protocols ahead of time, and all protocols were strictly adhered to for a safe and comfortable stay.  We are looking forward to getting married here in 2020!

Feels like staying with good friends

Being able to return to the place where we got married feels so special. We recently visited to celebrate our 2 year anniversary. As always, the 1774 Inn was beautiful, serene, and welcoming. Marianne greeted us outside (mask on!) with freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. She went over the protocols on how the Inn is doing it’s part to stay safe and keeps it’s guests safe as well. We felt very comfortable staying there. We chose the Woodshed room, the same room we had for our wedding. We love being able to sit out on our private back porch, taking in the scene. We wandered around the property, reminiscing about our wedding day. It was great to be able to catch up and chat with Stuart, one of the owners, who is so friendly and a wine wizard! 
A delicious homemade breakfast was served to us outside on the porch- melon and tomatoes from their garden! 
We lingered for a bit, not wanting to leave. As always, we will be back.

2 year Anniversary

Back for our seventh stay since 2014, we were once again thrilled to be spending a few nights at the 1774 Inn.  Why do we keep coming back?  My wife and I love Maine and find the inn to be the idyllic mid-coast Maine experience, and Sarah and Stuart are the best hosts!   

Built in 1774 and remaining very original, the inn oozes with historic significance and charm, while tastefully providing modern comforts.  Its setting along the Kennebec River on the peaceful Phippsburg peninsula offers the perfect place to relax and unwind.  (Enjoying a glass of wine on the expansive lawn in the fresh Maine air is simply heaven.)  Sarah and Stuart's love for the inn is evident by their careful preservation efforts and updates.  

All the rooms are spotlessly clean and cozy, but our favorite is the Woodshed room which offers a private deck and entrance.  

Breakfasts are skillfully prepared using local ingredients and showcase Sarah and Stuart's culinary knowledge.  They provide a perfect beginning to the day whether your plan is to spend the afternoon relaxing on Pompom Beach or exploring the sights and shops of nearby coastal towns.      

Our deepest gratitude to Sarah and Stuart for all their kindness and thoughtfulness that has gone into making our stays with them beyond enjoyable.  Their sharing of their time, talents and friendship has made us feel like much more than just guests, and we can't wait for our next stay with them!

Perfect in so many ways

What a lovely family trip we enjoyed in the summer of 2019. Popham Beach is wonderful, sure, but much of what made our stay so memorable was the 1774 Inn. A gorgeous multi-course breakfast was a treat to begin our days. Their focus on local fare doesn't feel like a shallow business model, it's clearly a philosophy Stuart and Sarah live by and lucky are the patrons. They adjusted the menu around dietary restrictions too. The setting and grounds are totally gorgeous and the Woodshed Room, where we stayed, was just perfect for our family of 3. Thanks Stuart and Sarah, we look forward to our next stay!

All around beautiful

We were lucky enough to stumble on the 1774 Inn as part of a last minute trip to the Maine coast. Stuart and Sarah took over the Inn about a year ago, and have taken the incredible property and restored it to simple elegance. Their taste is exquisite, and there is no need to compromise between being in a nice old inn and having luxurious appointments. The linens were lovely, the mattress and pillows new, and high end toiletries. The breakfast was delicious, all with Farm to table ingredients. The setting was very peaceful and just down the road from the stunning Popham Beach. Really, you can’t ask for more. Highly recommend.

Little jewel

This is our second time at the 1774 and Sarah and Stewart have poured so much love into the inn since they purchased it -- restoring period details and modernizing the inn to a level of comfort that rivals traditional resorts. The thing about the 1774 is that it's unbelievably personal. It's like staying with dear friends that are kind and interesting. The experience is soulful, peaceful and delicious. The owners have extensive backgrounds in food and restaurants and care deeply about how it is sourced and prepared and it shows from Stewart's pour-over coffee to the Sarah's homemade muffins and cookies. They grow so many things right on the property that show up on your breakfast plate. Also, the beds and linens are divine. We might make this an annual trip.

Luxurious cozy getaway and delicious breakfast and homemade cookies

If you're looking for a beautiful backdrop with amazing hospitality, 1774 Inn is IT!  I planned a weekend getaway with our 2 dogs for my husband's birthday and it completely blew him away. We stayed in the spacious woodshed room which had a private porch and entrance with views of the river.  Everything about the B & B was beautiful and memorable. Every morning, we were greeted by Sarah and Stuart's warm smile and a delicious 2 course farm to table breakfast served with fresh juice and hand poured coffee (Sarah is a culinary chef and Stuart is a sommelier).  I definitely recommend staying here if you want to get away from it all and don't know why you would consider staying anywhere else in Maine!  You won't be disappointed.  I already have a reservation to return for a girl's weekend. 

The only B&B I'll stay in Maine

Having a very special guest in town, I looked for an Inn close to Portland to spend a nite and introduce him to one of my favorite areas in Maine, Popham Beach. The 1774 Inn was the perfect choice. From a special greeting by Stuart, one of the owners, to the great level of detail he and his staff provided during our stay, it more than created an experience which has me only considering when I will be able to return. The Inn is tastefully appointed with furnishings while reminding me what old Maine may have been like during an era gone by. The breakfast was filled with homemade treats that Stuart and his wife Sarah make at the Inn including fresh blueberry preserves. The lawn facing the waterfront is dotted with adirondack chairs where you can enjoy views of the water. This is truly a special place with Inn Keepers that want nothing more than to make you feel more than special. 

What a treat!

An impressive traditional house in a stunning location. Stuart gave us a very warm welcome including a guided tour of the historic house. Our room was large, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Breakfasts, prepared by Sarah, were superb but unfortunately we never met her during our stay. We were given good local advice regarding sightseeing, walks and restaurants. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend to others.

Road trip around New England

Gorgeous property, with amazing view of Kennebec River. This historic home still has original glass, floors and hardware, horse hair plaster walls. Tastefully decorated, and clean. The breakfasts are AMAZING! Farm-to-table experience. Stuart & Sarah are wonderful people. Highly recommend.
