This is a wonderful small inn right on the hill above the harbor. It's well-run, friendly, and very clean, with comfortable beds. We got an ocean-view room with a jetted tub and listened to the surf all night. The harbor was quiet. You can put in an order for breakfast take-out options delivered to your room. Our breakfast burritos arrived still warm! We found it to be a good option to sometimes-expensive Mendocino.

Good alternative to Mendocino

Let's just say its a challenge to get here! Be careful about following your GPS from Hwy. 101. If you're already traveling on Hwy 1, then it's an easy find.
But, listening to the waves crashing promotes the best kind of sleep! We stayed when the waves were particularly huge and noisy. View from the deck of wharf & ocean was unbeatable. We were there on a Thursday, so restaurant was closed, but room service was available. I had the Gumbo and it was wonderful. Had a bit of a spicy kick. Wife had the scampi and enjoyed it too. Karen at the office was very courteous and said the gumbo recipe was hers! With the in-room spa tub, this is a nice place for a romantic getaway. Tv's have built in dvd players. Cable TV wasn't very good. So, bring your own movies.
We really enjoyed our stay. Next time we'll probably stay for more than one night, and time it so we can eat in the restaurant.

Remote, but Restful & Scenic Inn

Came here for an overnight after a fancy lunch in Elk. The manager Karen has a warm and inviting personality which matched the vibe of the entire property and our room. We had a partial view room (115) which was way more than partial in my opinion. Rooms had a jacuzzi tub which we didn’t used but kinda wish I would have. There is a “fireplace” heater in the room which  has a warm, clean feel and a balcony for relaxing outside. Rooms are very spacious as well and include a mini fridge and in room coffee service. There is a great pizza place a 5 min walk from the property and a number of other restaurants about a mile into town. They have a little bar/restaurant on prem. They had a limited menu for both dinner and breakfast. You can order hot breakfast items or they offered complimentary yogurt with granola and some packed pastries along w coffee and tea for breakfast. The lobby has tons of wine, wine, beer and soft drinks for sale along with various sundry items like bath bombs, robes etc. They also have a great selection of dvds and games to use. We loved the private hiking trail entrance and used it to access the bluffs to watch the sunset. The trail will take you all the way to the light house -4.5 miles. I would highly recommend The Wharf Master Inn for couples or families.

Cozy, inviting place overlooking the wharf

Truly a one-of-a-kind place nestled in the cove at Point Arena. Clean, private, quiet stay with an awesome view. It's clear the owners have taken great care of the rooms and grounds, including the in-room jetted tub, trail access, and a neat games area outside with Cornhole and axe throwing.

We had the fortune and pleasure of meeting the owners at the attached bar. They were charming, fun, and went out of their way to make sure our stay was perfect.

I recommend the Wharf Master's Inn to anyone traveling the Northern California Coast, and we'll stay here again our next visit!

Perfect getaway for two!

We had a lovely 1 night stay for my birthday in a great room overlooking the ocean.
We arrived in the afternoon and the whole area was without power. When it got dark they brought us lanterns.  
We ordered room service for dinner as they had a generator.  Luckily the power came on after about 4hrs. 
The food was really good. The service and friendliness of the staff make this an even nicer stay.  Room was clean and had all we needed. 
We ordered breakfast burrito for the next day as we had an early start. It was huge and good.  The cook even ran out as we were packing car because she forgot to cut it in half.  That was nice. 
Definitely stay here.  Great location on the water listening to the waves.  Friendly owners and staff.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Wharf Master's Inn.  It is a lovely boutique hotel with beautiful views of the Point Arena cove and wharf.  The room was spotless and well-appointed with a very comfortable bed and plenty of room.  Every staff member was cheerful and ready to assist if needed.  Karen and Cliff are exceptional proprietors who made us feel very welcome.  We hope to return again soon.

Didn't want to leave!

There are so many great things to say about this place that I will summarize it in two words: FANTASTIC & MAGNIFICENT.
The owners connect with you in such a welcoming manner from the moment you make a phone call until your day of arrival.
The staff is always smiling reassuring they are glad to have you on premises.
Personally, I go by instructions especially when traveling solo and their welcome letter explains everything that you don't really need to ask many questions once you are at the inn.

Fantastic, magnificent & welcoming 

This is a multi-million $ property in a perfect, historic north coast setting owned & run by the most amazing innkeeper we have ever met. Karen is maintaining & upgrading constantly in the year & a half (as af this writing) since taking over, yet she is always available to guests for great conversation & extra service.
Hope she finds an assistant w/same standards soon!
The mostly invisible worker bees are meticulous -- from cleaning of comfortable & beautifully appointed rooms to maintaining the perfect gardens -- even drying the lovely wood railings of these historic bldgs. from the ocean fog & dew each morn.!
Pt. Arena is small -- staying at @ 500 in pop. for its nearly 200 yrs. With a microwave & small frig. (w/freezer!), bring food
to tide you over excursions.
There is great coffee & biscotti in the main bldg.'s lobby every morn. Too much to see & do in this area to care about the boob tube. Not much tv available, but wifi  was good.
Electric fireplace in an antique cabinet, & the best jacuzzi tub separated from very comfy queen bed. (Toilet & shower w/good pressure in separate rm.)
Forest right in back of rm., where entry doors are, & perfect views of harbor & cliffs out windows & glass doors to the west/front of bldg. We were up high, rm. 116. Many stairs, but staggered so not hard -- unless handicapped.
But there are many rooms at ground level w/views also, as whole area built on cliffs.
This is THE inn to run away to if you love the ocean backed by forest. Makes driving the corkscrew roads from any direction worth it.

Historic, beautifully maintained gem

You truly don’t need to look any further for one of the most beautiful Inn’s on the coast.

Every detail of this gorgeous boutique inn has been considered for the comfort of the guests. From the outside gardens and fountains, to the magnificent rooms, to the lovely restaurant. While we had booked the reservation mainly for the ocean view and the sound of the waves for a good night’s sleep (we stayed in a Queen Suite), we could not believe our eyes when we stepped into the room. Every. Single. Detail. The room is exquisite, from the decor to the cleanliness…oh and did I mention how amazingly comfortable the bed and pillows are? I am quite picky about the mattress I sleep on, and clearly they spared no expense when it came to the beds, the pillows, the sheets, and the blankets. Soft and comfortable.

This Inn is designed for serenity, and with the private hiking trail through beautiful trees and along the coast, only accessible by guests through a gate at the back of the property, the peaceful atmosphere, the quiet rooms, the ambiance - everything about our stay was pure tranquility. I would suggest taking a book so you can sit and read on your own private deck while watching for whales below (we saw whales and seals while hiking just a few steps away). However, after a gorgeous hike, whale watching, looking out at the waves with a glass of wine on the deck, and a luxurious jetted bath in the room, I didn’t quite stay awake long enough to crack the book. We have decided we are going to stay longer the next time because one night just simply isn’t enough.

One other important note - because it’s incredibly important to me, is just how welcoming the owners and their employees are. Karen and Cliff are so genuinely hospitable and have worked hard to make this the retreat that exceeds expectations, and it shows. We can’t thank them enough for making our stay such a beautiful experience. We will definitely be visiting again soon.

Spectacular view of the Ocean. Room was nice, clean and comfortable. We met Karen on check in and she is wonderful.  Her husband Cliff was also helpful as were all the staff at the restaurant and hotel.

We just enjoyed a two night get away and cant wait to return.
