Point Reyes Hostel Stay Review
I recently spent two nights in a dorm at this hostel, my first dorm experience since school days. The services are basic, which is typical for hostels. The dorm has its own living room with a fantastic mountain view. Plenty of parking is available, though there are no public restrooms for visitors. Wi-Fi is limited to the main lodge, but that was fine for me.
The hostel is located at the coastal trailhead with numerous short trails. While there's no direct ocean view, the beach is just 2-3 miles away. The real highlight is the hostess - incredibly patient and helpful, always willing to accommodate guest requests like bed changes. The environment is tranquil, just what I wanted.
The only downside was the dorm bed's comfort. I struggled to sleep well and would consider opting for a private room with a full-size bed next
Tip:
If you're planning to stay for 2-3 nights, bring along both cooked and uncooked food, as well as enough drinks to cover three meals a day. The nearest market is 7 miles away, so it's best to come prepared.

Tranquil Retreat with Mountain Views: A Dive into My First Hostel Dorm Stay

I am a Native Californian and have stayed at PRH a total of three times in my life...once in the 80s, once in the 90s, and again in 2014.  That said, how the hell do the managers justify a nightly price tag of $150???  Back in the 80s 90s, I think it cost something like 15 bucks a night if it was that much...the place back then was just the single main cottage with a couple of rooms filled with bunk beds.  Still, it was super fun and I have fond memories of the place.  My stay in 2014 was my first experience with the additional outbuildings, and I seem to remember it cost ~$35 a night.  I certainly didn't pay 150 FREAKING DOLLARS!!!  This place is supposed to be a hostel, a H-O-S-T-E-L...honestly, I don't see anything in the photos here to suggest that a major upgrade has occurred such as a swimming pool, sauna, turndown, shuttles, room service, and fine dining as part of the amenities!!  Are there no limits to greedy price gouging in California??  Are there no limits to discouraging low and middle income wage earners from taking much needed getaways??  I guess you don't think so, PRH managers!!!

My favorite location in the hostel is the living room; the setting is every bit as or more comfortable than any house or apartment where I lived. It is magazine worthy. It is homey and cozy yet ample for visitors to move about. It was a private ranch home at one time, which is probably why one gets that feeling of comfort. The kitchen is smaller, which means the stove and refrigerator/freezer is smaller than larger hostels. Even if you are there only one night, bring your own food, even its just to make buttered noodles, as the nearest store is miles away. Many miles. This place is remote. There are hiking trails down to the beach, unfortunately I did not have time to avail myself of them.  There is a computer that has dial-up, other than that, there are books in the living room and a guitar that a guest, a musician, was playing.  It was great. I nearly fell asleep on the couch, his playing was so lovely. I was the only occupant of the female six-bed room, so I got a bottom bunk. It was a little hard to sit up, but hey, I was there to sleep. The bathroom was lovely, two shower stalls and two toilets. The décor was rustic, but chic in a way. If I were to choose a real getaway not far from home, this place would be it. For travelers that are hikers and the outdoors type, this place is it!

Lovely respite, very cozy

Squeezing eight men (on four bunk beds) into a 12 x 16 room with poor ventilation just didn't work, particularly because one of them snored and coughed all night and befouled the air with the germs of whatever illness he had.  Isn't there any sort of screening process?  Yes, ideally the man would be responsible enough NOT to subject other people to his illness (I discovered in the morning that he was equal parts discourtesy and stupidity), but we can't count on this.  He should have been quarantined somewhere, or asked to go to a regular motel, where he'd have his own room.  Eventually, I had to migrate out to the couch in the main room to get some sleep.  Fortunately, the couch was at least comfortable--much more comfortable than the substandard beds (wobbly frame, short length, thin cheap mattress).  I was with two friends.  One was on the lower bunk and he got no sleep, and the other was by the window, where he was only able to sleep because he opened the window and had his head as close to the fresh air as possible.  For all three of us it was a bad experience.  This hostel is poorly designed and managed, which is a shame because the Pt. Reyes region is beautiful and alluring and it should feature a nice hostel.  Strange, too, is that while the S.F. Bay Area is filled with intelligent, imaginative, and innovative people, none of these qualities seem to have influenced this hostel.

Worst Hostel Experience Ever

I stayed in the men's dorm in a bunk bed. The beds are a thick foam. For me it was great but if you don't like a soft bed it might not work. Great ambiance. This would be a perfect place if you want a quiet place to rest and think. About 5 minutes from a beach. 15 minutes to Point Reyes Station. I used it as a base to explore the coastal area.

The staff, Nancy and Brenda, were great. I truly recommend this hostel.

The hostel at Point Reyes sits in a lovely valley, in an historic farmhouse, renovated to modern yet still charming standards.  The hostel is far more welcoming than before.  They now have very reasonable individual accommodation, as well as dorm style, a fully outfitted kitchen, but you bring the food, a relaxed alcohol policy, no chores and a fabulous setting, barely a mile from the gorgeous seashore.  If you want to get away to a stunning destination, and have a very reasonable stay in the heart of the National Seashore, you cannot do much better than Point Reyes Seashore.

Beautiful and affordable retreat

I don't know where to begin with this place.We arrived after a long day of work and were greeted by the noise of a light breeze blowing through the valley and two ravens, chatting. From that promising start, it only got better. My husband and I stayed in a private room, which was perfectly clean and comfortable. The common room and kitchen are funky and quaint and immaculate. The location? Top notch. Only two miles to Limantour Beach where we pretty much spent our 2 day visit. The coastal trail made for a great morning run workout. We saw elk and skunk and bunnies and seals and squirrels and of course, ravens. Although we spent virtually all of our waking hours at the beach, our time on the grounds was so charming, cozy, and relaxing, I wish I could stay there forever. What a sweet and unexpected surprise. The shocker is that our private room was only $105 a night. I've stayed in much less impressive locations at triple the price

Superb

Brought my football team here and it was great. Kids had a blast in the bunk room and the adults were more comfortable in the smaller rooms. The kitchen had everything we needed, staff was great. All in all, we will most likely be back again if we are out that way.

The hostel is in the headland North of the Golden Gate Bridge.  If you get car sick driving curvy mountain roads, this is not your place to stay. However if you want to see deer, elk, hawks, frogs, otters,  sea lions, whales and other wildlife while hiking this IS your go to place. 

If you are looking to party and chat it up after 10pm, not your place. Quiet time at 10pm. Most people were awake at sunrise, packed and ready for a day of hiking. 

The lodging is cozy, clean and comfy though I wish the fireplace was working. The kitchen has all utensils you will need and the most flavorful and aromatic complimentary coffee and teas.

The staff is very kind, helpful and knowledgeable about the trails and park. I highly recommend Tomales Bay hiking with the Elk!! Beware of coyotes! Enjoy!!

My first stay at a hostel and I will be back!! The most important thing is to get the door code as you leave,  once it changes, if no one is there you are locked out and s.o.l. until 430.

2 day rainy stay

My husband and I stayed here during a hiking trip. It was peaceful and in the middle of multiple hiking trails. It was the cleanest hostel I've visited. We stayed in one of the four private rooms, which are split into two separate locked entries. Each entry way has a separate shower area and toilet area shared between the two rooms. The four private rooms share a small common area, kitchen, and outdoor balcony; however, we still had access to the larger common area and kitchen.

Organic coffee beans were provided, with electric coffee pot, French press, pour over, or espresso options. Kitchens were well stocked with utensils and cookware.

We are already planning our next trip, and we think it would be ideal to come with a few families together, to share meals and good times.
