My husband and I booked a room here to see the solar eclipse. Along with our quaint, very clean and comfortable basic room (the beds and pillows were nicer than I expected), we were very happy to see that behind the motel was a lovely expanse of nature---with a tree line bordering train tracks, just perfect for viewing the eclipse. We took our patio chairs back there from our room and enjoyed the amazing eclipse. The proprietor was very friendly and viewed the spectacle too! We also utilized a covered patio near our room for breakfast, and the motel's office doubles as a public living room area. All in all, VERY nice! I wish we could have stayed longer to explore the area. For a small motel, I'm giving an excellent rating because our stay exceeded my expectations.

Quaint lodgings added to our eclipse experience

Motel just outside Pdam.  Easy to get to, good signage.  Not serving food at this time, so be sure to ask.  We ended up being late for our arrival time, and I called to let them know.  She figured that might be the case, and made easy arrangements to get us in to our room - which she had started the heat in, so it was nice and cozy.  

Fancy? no. Clean and comfortable? - yes.  Good value for the price.  If daughter ends up going to SUNY Pdam, I'll be back

Handled our late arrival very nicely

Great rates, comfortable bed, comfortable room, cozy, the best place to stay, they treat you like family. The owners are attentive to any needs of the guests and it certainly is the most affordable stay in the Potsdam and Canton area.

I'd easily 'ditto' the comments in the review by Wanbee. We pulled up to the red barn (check-in location) only to find an envelope with my name on it tacked to the door frame saying, here's the key, help yourself! We did. Yes, the bathroom floor (or at least a small portion of it) was heated, but we also could not adjust the room heat; it was cool the whole time. The room was microscopic; not much bigger than the bed (whose mattress was worn and sagging). There was a 12 inch (or so) flat screen tv on the wall (didn't know they came that small!). When we went to shower in the morning, there was very hot and very cold water, but one couldn't find a warm setting in between. The website pictures a lovely breakfast included, with fresh fruit and "the best blueberry muffins in Potsdam". In actuality, no breakfast currently is offered, thus no muffins!!  Overall, a big disappointment.

Sadly lacking.

You won’t find a more inviting place, though it is outside of town. The rooms, beds, and price are better than average. The hospitality is outstanding. Skip the web and call Stephanie for a great deal. 

A real gem

We spent a night in P at the Northern and it is the nicer motel I have ever been in. Very nice and gentile owner, nice rooms with a beautifull garden to chill out a little bit. Great breakfast made by the owner!!!

We have stayed here twice with Eric and Stephanie, she makes an awesome little spread for breakfast with that Home cooked feel, because it is.  Homemade muffins, homemade egg/sausage bites, fruit, yogurt, etc.  Hospitality to go along with it.  We have sat and had a glass of wine next to the fire pit.  You won't get this feeling or service from a Hotel in town.  Family rooms are big, but most are quaint little motel rooms with fridge and micro that do the job.  We will be back again!  Thank you for your friendship and service.

Great little Motel with that Old School hospitality.

Although the rooms are not modern they were however clean and did not smell.  We stayed in room #13 and it was very quiet.  We had everything we needed.  The heat in the room worked perfectly.  Beds were clean and comfy as the rest of the room.  We met Stephanie at breakfast in the morning since we arrived after 9pm.  The breakfast at the barn was so nice and homey.  We felt right at home and her two pups were such a nice touch greeting us at the door.  The blueberry muffins were out of this world along with the rest of the service.  We are definitely coming back here!

Great family motel

Loved this hotel. Family who runs this hotel is very friendly. They live onsite so they are always there if any problems that come up. Breakfast was great. Muffins and fresh fruit was excellent. The room was clean. Air conditioner was very cold. There are chairs right outside your door to sit and relax. The deck by the hotel office had gas fire pits so at night you can sit and relax. Also they are very close to stores and restaurants.

Great family hotel

Nothing fancy about this place, but reasonably priced.  Room was small but clean.  Sheets were a bit threadbare.
The heat could not be adjusted, so the room was a bit cool- stayed in mid-April when it was still snowing.
The room's bathroom floor was warn, which was nice, but wish the room could have been warmer.
Although the reservation said continental breakfast was included, at check-in I was told that it is served only on the weekends. Looking back, continental breakfast was listed on my Expedia confirmation e-mail.  That should be fixed, as the motel website lists the breakfast as a special thing.  One of the reasons I picked this place.
For the price, comparing the area, it was clean and OK.
