This was my first visit to Kalahari-Dells. The purpose of the stay was a youth hockey tournament. 

My favorite aspects of the stay were food and entertainment selection. 

I was very pleased with the room, and amenities. The facility overall was friendly to energetic kiddos. 

The one drawback was finding a location in the evening for adults to chill and converse. Security had our group move a few times, even though we were quiet.

Hockey Stay

Vomit in the hallway, very disgruntled employees, completely unnecessary, very loud machinery in the middle of the night until two in the morning. No one at the front desks, they expect automated kiosks to take the place a person handing out room keys! We had specific room requests which we confirmed on three different occasions and were told that they could accommodate these requests, they did not. We were told in person, at check-in that our room was in fact what we asked for, it was not. We had to complain, then had to move everything to an appropriate room on the other side of the resort. Rooms are not as advertised. Travelers beware!

Horrible experience at the Kalahari

Go to wilderness! Skip kalahari! We’ve been going to wilderness for yrs and decided to try kalahari.  It was 3x the price, less water slides, terrible rooms with no kitchens and not worth it.  Wilderness resort has better/more exciting slides and great set up for families at a good price.  

Skip kalahari, stick w/ Wilderness 

I stayed in a room in the Sands building on the Kalahari resort. There is a waterpark, amusement park, restaraunts and many shops. All those are in the main building. The room was great and the walls were kinda thin but ok enough. Some of the waterslides were closed for some reason but most of them were open. The wait times were ~3-10 mins depending on the slide and all of them were at least decent . The amusement park was a 15 min walk there and had an arcade, some rides, laser tag, go karts, and a ropes course. It was about as crowded as the waterpark. We didn't buy any food but there is a store 10 mins down the highway.  

Great time but lots of cardio!

We had a great time and there is a lot to do there. Our room was a far walk from the water park and the room was a little outdated. But it is a fun place with a lot to do. I would go back if the prices were a little lower.

Fun time

Coming to Kalahari (WI) has turned into a game of What Have They Taken Away This Year?   Every year we come and more of our favorite things are gone.  Long gone are the family activities (Deal or No Deal, scavenger hunts, etc.).   Gone is the cookie decorating at 3:00 pm.   Gone (for greed) are a lot of the seating areas.   Now you have to pay a surcharge of $150 just to sit at a basic table and have the option of paying for food (and be charged a 20% delivery fee on top).   Gone to the overwhelming majority of the people are the most of the hot tubs.   Now you have to pay for a special cabana to get into the hot tubs that were taken away.  

So come to Kalahari if you want to pay $56 for a lunch buffet on Christmas, get yelled at by the Towel Lord in the morning, and pay $7 for a bowl of Fruit Loops.

What really saved our visit was the wonderful attitude of the lifeguards in the waterpark.  There were so friendly and helpful with our children, especially with the Flow Rider.

Nothing in life is free ... especially at Kalahari

We rented the 4 BR Lakefront Chalet for Dec 26-30 for our group of 10. We arrived on Monday and the Chalet was not ready. They let us know at 5PM, 1 hour after the check in time of 4 PM that it was ready. Not too big a deal, we understood that it was Chirstmas holiday crowds. We arrive at the Chalet - it is actually a 1 Bedroom attached to a 3 Bedroom unit. The one bedroom was fine but when we walked into the 3 Bedroom unit it was dirty, food on the floor, beds unmade, used towels on the floor. It took us over 30 minutes to get in touch with the front desk and they said they would send housekeeping right over.  We had food for the week in the car that we could not unload, we had to go out to dinner. Not fun with two small kids wanting to use the waterpark. When we got back from dinner the cleaning crew was hard at work and maintenance was there fixing TV's. We were finally able to unload at 8PM. The maintenance worker finally left around 8:30. We didn't get kids to bed until 10PM. The main TV still didn't work. On top of that the maintenance workers tracked salt from the sidewalks all over the clean floor. There were no floor mats. The front desk offered us $300 for our troubles. I said we would like to speak with the manager and they said she would call us first thing in the morning. She didn't. We sent the family onto the waterpark and waited for the manager. She offered us $500 for our troubles. Keep in mind this unit rented for over $1200 the first night and even more later in the week. We found out later that the unit had been broken into by the previous renters of the 1 BR unit.

Disappointed with management and Lakefront Villas

We have been here two times now during sub zero winter temps. Six years ago and recently in 2022 a week before Christmas. Our now adult children enjoyed the indoor water park. We stayed for three nights which seems about the perfect stay during the winter. It’s so warm inside and the staff does a great job at maintaining and keeping the entire resort and rooms clean.  Our first night sleep was not good. Our room was on the second floor and our neighbors directly above us had unruly and noisy kids running and jumping around till 2 am. We called front desk at 10 pm about the noise and they sent security but to no avail. So the next day we requested a different room and they accommodated us immediately to a nicer and quiet room. It made our stay so nice. My adult children enjoyed all of the extreme water slides and we all enjoyed the Master Blaster. Our all time favorite is the lazy rivers and the outdoor hot tubs. Something for all ages  and interests. Great family fun!!

Awesome Indoor Water Park and Resort during Winter months

It has been a few years since we have been able to visit Kalahari Due to the pandemic. We are going to surprise the kids at Christmas with a family trip as a family gift. Had some glitches trying to book. Typically we have gotten the queen African suite. The system kept freezing and I wasn't able to find the room so I booked a double queen suite. I'm hoping it is the same room since names Seemed to have changed. Looking forward to family time At the cabanas and sweet hut!!!!!!! Cabanas are amazing to rent for a designated spot at the water park. Also great for parents to rest while kids still play, completely recommend.

Kalahari

I've been coming to the dells kalahari for over a decade and it was always my favorite place to take my kids! It's been sad to watch the experience transition into a complete money grab, without any extra value for the increased pricing on everything. 

I'd say I have averaged a stay here of 2 times+ per year. This was my second stay this year. 

One of the most frustrating parts about this place is how you spend SO much money to stay here, and they take every chance they get to just absolutely destroy your wallet once you're here. Forgot a bottle of water? $3.75. Need a locker? $20 for the medium one that you'll need to fit stuff for a family of 4 for one day. Want to play games at the arcade? Most games are 10 tokens, and the tokens are 80 for $20. It comes out to $2.50 for each game. We spent $100 and came out with $5 worth of prizes, which would be fine, if the $100 wasn't also gone in a matter of 15 minutes. I get that we don't win at the arcade, but you don't even want to let us PLAY.

The new turnstiles to get into the waterpark, the new towel system, it's all inconvenient to YOU, to get all the $$$ they can. You know the towel system is a ploy to take advantage of kids forgetting/losing towels or other guests taking them. $20 a towel adds up! 

When I stayed here earlier this year, I pre-booked a room for 2 adults and 5 kids. They charged $50 for the 5th kid even though the room type slept 8. The kid wasn't able to come, but they wouldn't refund my $50 for that extra kid. Very cool, Kalahari. 

The waterpark opens at 10am (1 hour before checkout) and closes at 9pm. With the stay rates, it should be more like 8am-11pm. No excuse to have such limited hours. Beyond that, several slides are only open even more limited times during those hours. Also, half of the lazy river has been closed both times i've been here this year, several months apart.

One thing that really grossed me out, was on our first day, there was what looked like a little fecal matter on the floor (looked like it maybe fell out of a diaper) on one of the walkways between the wave pool and the adult hot tub area (left side). I was shocked to see it STILL there the next day. Gross.

At the end of the day, Kalahari is a nice place with some cool features, but it's not for anyone who doesn't have a crap ton of cash to blow AFTER spending money on the stay. It's for SURE a much better deal in the summer as the outdoor waterpark/timbavati add value to the place.

The good:

The front desk was surprisingly well staffed compared to previous visits. Checking in, even on a saturday at around 2pm was very fast and the front desk staff was very friendly. They all looked happy to be there/help people. 

The wave people connecting with the lazy river is one of the unique things that really makes the kalahari my favorite indoor waterpark setup. Also, allowing tubes in the wave pool (great wolf does not for example)

The indoor/outdoor hot tubs are also awesome. 

Honestly, the Kalahari has the potential to be such a better experience than it is. I hope whoever reads this realizes how some of the little cash grabs really take away from the experience.
