We enjoyed our stay here after spending the day in Harper's Ferry. This is a beautiful old home, very cozy, clean, and well-appointed. The innkeepers were very friendly and fun to talk to. We enjoyed wandering the town a bit including the nearby university. We stayed in Room 1 which was spacious, including the bathroom; comfy bed and fun to have a fireplace. Situated at the front of the inn, there was a bit of road noise, but no big deal. The light breakfast worked just fine for us (would have preferred an earlier option).

Cozy history

This is beautiful home and the accommodations were very clean and the bed very comfortable. There were several welcoming places to sit, inside or outside. The sherry available in the sitting room was a nice touch. It was walkable to several good restaurants. Some complained about the noisy traffic in the front rooms, but we were not bothered. The innkeeper does provide ear plugs if you want. The breakfast was small-one hard boiled egg, fruit, yogurt, breads, juice, coffee served at 8:30.  This is the only reason I did not rate this a 5. I felt for the price you should get a more generous hot breakfast. In the past this has been our experience with B&Bs. Never met the innkeeper, perhaps because we arrived late afternoon and let ourselves in with passcode to house. then key in our rooms door. 

Beautiful home, Very Clean and Comfortable

What a lovely time Sam and I had staying at this beautiful Inn this past weekend!  A very short walk to everything that Shepherdstown has to offer, this stately, historic Inn and the couple who own it (Joe and Melissa) are truly delightful!  Conversation with Joe while sipping sherry on Saturday evening was a highlight which carried over into after dinner drinks at the Mecklenburg Inn which truly made our trip!  These owners have it right when it comes to B & B's.  Their attention to detail is evident as soon as you walk in.
We were so very pleased with our stay and with meeting Joe and Melissa. 
We have already told several of our friends about your hospitality and will definitely be back!  Thank you so much for everything. Sam H and Brenda M 

Delightful Inn!

Our stay at the Thomas Shepherd Inn was fantastic! We were in Shepherdstown for a family wedding, and did not get to take advantage of the beautiful seating areas and only was able to enjoy one of the breakfasts. Melissa , the host, was exceptional! She was very welcoming and gracious! We stayed in room number 4 -  it was quiet and cozy, very updated, and had everything we needed. Will definitely be staying here again and look forward to enjoying more time in the garden!

This is a beautiful inn with a big back porch and yard, gorgeous wood floors, antiques, lovingly decorated guest rooms and interesting Civil War memorabilia. Melissa and Joe were so welcoming, and one of the photos on the wall of the parlor is Melissa's great grandfather, who fought at Antietam and other battles. The inn is just a couple of blocks from shops and restaurants and interesting landmarks in the historic district. Coffee, tea and muffins are available in the dining room every morning, and you'll get a list of places to go if you want a big breakfast. For dinner, try Alma Bea's, which serves Appalachian tapas, barbecue and great drinks. We would love to go back to the inn and to Shepherdstown again.

We Want To Go Back

If you want a very warm welcoming place to stay this is it. The accommodations were wonderful, the inn keepers were so kind and helpful. The breakfast that they served the days we were there beat many restaurant meals. Conveniently located to town, restaurants and the C & O.

Wonderful stay, friendly inn keepers

My husband and I stayed here one night on our way through the area.  The Inn is gorgeous and very clean.  The grounds are wonderful and there are nooks everywhere to relax.  We were able to walk downtown to have a late dinner and a drink.  The breakfast was outstanding ,and the hosts were very accomodating.  I hope to stay here again it really made our trip special.

My cousin and I stayed at the Thomas Shepherd Inn when we attended the  Contemporary American Theatre Festival.  The Inn is an ideal location within a few blocks of the venues and the downtown restaurants.  We were told that the Inn had undergone recent rennovations and it showed.  The house and the gardens sparkled.  The room was comfortable and well furnished.  Joe and Melissa are gracious hosts.
A great place but it would not be suitable for someone with mobility problems since all the rooms require going up stairs.

Their motto is: Come as a Stranger,  Leave as a Friend, and how true! Joe and Melissa, the new innkeepers, extend their Southern hospitality to all,  and it really felt like we were visiting old friends at their charming and immaculate home. The rooms are big and functional.  No doilies clutter the tabletops. The poster bed was like sleeping on a cloud,  it was so high off the floor and so heavenly to lie in! They had some nice touches too: soft thick bathrobes,  a library with games, magazines and refreshments, and well functioning wardrobes and dresser drawers. The poached eggs were perfection,  as was the yogurt and berries. The Inn has a gorgeous upper balcony with a nice view of their garden, a favorite place for us to sit. It's well positioned in town too: we walked to the restaurants and Antietam battlefield was a short drive away.  The C&O canal is easy walking distance as well. This is the place to stay if you're looking for a romantic getaway or escape from the rat race.

Charming Civil War Era Home

We recently visited and enjoyed the warm hospitality of the owners and the features and amenities of the inn itself.  Substantive improvements have blended the beautiful period furnishings with modern function to make the stay both unique and comfortable.  Breakfast was thoughtfully prepared to provide several options with healthy offerings and full meal alternatives.  Our clean corner room included a king size bed, plenty of light  and lots of space to move.  The Civil War period inn has all the charming touch that makes the B & B experience special.  A nice feature for a mid-day break is a flower garden behind the inn.  In addition, the property is located right on the edge of the historic downtown, with a quaint colonial feel and a number of shops, restaurants and pubs within a short walk.  We highly recommend a visit to the Thomas Shepherd.
