i made reservations two weeks before we were scheduled to stay.  The day before our stay, I received an email stating that our 2 rooms were cancelled.  There was no phone number to call or reason why it was cancelled.  The email did not even match the hotel name or third party name where I made the reservations.  I thought that it was just a scam but I looked up the phone number and called to confirm that we still had 2 rooms.  After being put on hold a few times, I was told to rest assured that our reservation was not cancelled.  I was told several times that I had nothing to worry about.  So we drove 5 hours the next day to the hotel and went to check in and they told us that our rooms were cancelled.  I explained to them that I called and was told that our rooms were not cancelled and that everything was good.  The guy at the front desk advised me that I made reservations through a third party and that they overbooked and so they had no rooms available.  He told me several times it was not his fault.  So here we were in a town with 3 hotels on 4th of July weekend.  There were no other vacancies anywhere else.  It is 100% the hotel's fault.  They hired the third party to book the rooms so they are completely responsible for not communicating with the third party on how many rooms they have available.  This really put us in a bind and the only thing they had to say is "it's not my fault".  Take responsibility for your actions when representing this hotel.  And who sends an email the day before to cancel.  Why no phone call?  It took 2 weeks to realize you overbooked?  Unbelievable.

Do not let the exterior fool you, this is a wonderful old motel. I don’t know about you, but old I can take but dirty I will not! No worries at this hotel, I had a King room with a large bathroom and everything was impeccably clean! The bed was comfy and everything was perfect. For the price, you cannot go wrong! I had an excellent stay and couldn’t complain about anything!

Give this place a chance!

Booked for location. No onsite .management...you have to go to their sister hotel to check in. When someone in our group had a problem with their room key it took 3 hours to resolve, including a sexually inappropriate encounter with the "handyman". Restaurant on site is great. Hotel was clean but very shabby and beds were terrible. Lack of management and service was bad.

Stay away

Terrible service; they act like they hate and distrust their customers.  Condescending attitude.  Unwilling to discuss or assist.  
It is stupid that this site wants 200 characters.  There is nothing more to say.  Its crackers to slip a rozzer a dropsie in snide.

The worst any where I've traveled

Stayed here September 2021, this place is not comfortable in any way.  I read the previous reviews before booking, not sure what rooms they had but this place is worn, noisy and lacking in comfort.  No bolt on front door, no ice, bed was interesting, no hairdryer, thin towels, the lobby is locked and you have to go to another place to check in.

Keep on Driving

I was staying with several friends recently, and we'd each booked separately.

One of our group received a call from the El Jo saying their "television system wasn't working" and they had booked a room for him at a nearby motel.

When each of us called separately, we were given the same story.  Note no one else had been proactively contacted by the hotel.

The desk clerk at the "new" hotel told us they simply gave our rooms away to other people.

My husband and I, along with two kids and two dogs, had our truck transmission go out on our way up from Tucson, through the back mountains to Alpine, and these folks could not have been more accommodating and nicer when we arrived - just before closing time.  We were so stressed and they were so kind, the room was clean and just what we needed to get cleaned up and rest overnight .  We will most definitely stay here a gain!!

Needed a Room in an Emergency

I stayed here and had messed up my reservation on a very busy, fully booked week.  They couldn’t have been nicer or more professional.  I had to move a table to get to a plug and was happy to see how clean everything was.  Great place to stay and very reasonable!

Really friendly front desk and very clean room!

This was our second year of staying at this hotel with our motorcycle group of 15 bikes and 20+ people.  They had a welcome sign and snacks 
 and drinks in the lobby for us, very nice after riding all day.  They were the only hotel we stayed in that got our reservations correct on our trip.  There are 2 decent restaurants within walking distance.  If we head in that direction next year, I know we will be staying there.  Rooms are clean and very reasonable priced.

Great locally owned hotel

This was our 3rd stay in 3 years at the EL JO ( named after original owners Ella and Joe) and it consistently meets our needs. It's older, a bit Route 66ish and great. All the employees are super friendly, accommodating and biker friendly. Office provides coffee, cookies mid-afternoon. Rates reasonable (AARP/AAA discounts), beds comfy, bath accommodating and rooms include microwave, coffee maker, frig. Hair dryers loaned free upon request. TV and WIFI good. Restaurant shares parking lot and offers discount to motel guests.
