A peaceful Methodist based 
Retreat with manicured grounds and places for prayer and reflection. Walking paths by the water, contemplation sites, and spanish moss draped trees. Frederica River views and amazing ambiance!

as a certiy lay minster I always enjoy the training and the peace and sincerely of how thi space was formed and started any years ago and it has maintained its reputation many years of hosting taring of the minster at the this lovely place.for learn and growing in faith an d discipleship.

My hubby booked us for my birthday weekend. It was a stormy Saturday when we arrived, but we found our room to be clean  comfy, and dry. Our stay was in a King room at Turner Lodge overlooking the Frederica River.  However, the real draw at Epworth is not the rooms, but the awesomely peaceful setting, with its amazing, natural scenery and historic island architecture. Beautiful centuries-old live oaks, walking trails, a prayer Chapel, a museum, on-site meeting rooms, the beautiful Frederica River, and for the more adventurous--group activities  like wall climbing, zip lining, etc., are all available to guests. Although I am not Methodist, as a Christian, I was delighted to learn that Epworth is affiliated with a major Methodist organization. Because it's such a beautiful place, we weren't surprised to see a bridal party preparing for some very memorable photos. Totally worth the drive and the price was a fraction of what some other Golden Isles resorts charge. Definitely plan to return!

Great birthday weekend retreat!

We took a trip to St. Simons Island for our first getaway after being cooped up from Covid.  The island is an  easy three-hour drive for us from Hilton Head Island.   

We have a particular interest in the St. Simon Trilogy books written by St. Simons  historical novelist, Eugenia Price, and wanted to visit island locations she wrote about.  We scored a 'two-fer" when we discovered Epworth By The Sea, a Methodist conference center, built on the grounds of the former Hamilton Plantation which Price writes about in the novel, "Lighthouse."  

Unfortunately, the free admission Moore Methodist Museum was closed because of Covid but we walked the peaceful  beautiful grounds.  Normally, the museum offers extensive information about Island History (St. Simons 360; Historical Video tour, Hamilton Plantation, Lovely Lane Chapel); Methodist History (John and Charles Wesley, Francis Asbury, Circuit Riders, Bishop Arthur J. Moore); Georgia History (Bishops, Missionaries, Women in Methodism); Nativities Collection (Over 85 international nativities); and, John Wesley Lecture (Free lecture on Thursdays at 2:00 p.m.).  A Christian gift shop and book store complement the programs. 

A short drive leads to Gascoigne Bluff, location of the important saw mills on the Hamilton Plantation of the Lighthouse era.  Two reconstructed tabby slave cabins adjacent to Epworth are worthy of a visit. They are maintained by the Cassina Garden Club. There is so much history on these grounds.

The Epworth grounds are large including an auditorium, motel, historic buildings and a beautiful view of the water.  Epworth was the name of the Wesley brothers', (founders of Methodism) home village in England.  Members of the Methodist faith would find Epworth by the Sea a treasure trove of faith.  I'm only sorry Covid prevented us from exploring the museum. 



Peaceful Epworth by the Sea

If you are wanting a peaceful, safe and serene place to visit, I highly recommend Epworth By the Sea. When I enter through the gates, my stress level seems to go away.   The grounds are beautiful and it is such a beautiful place to walk.  I love going into the little chapel and meditating while there.  There are several types of accommodations on the grounds.  If you want a river view, I highly recommend the Roberson Inn or the Turner Lodge (this has balconies).  You can purchase meals at the cafeteria that is onsite. I think the best thing about Epworth besides the beautiful grounds are the employees who are friendly and will help you with any questions you have!  I highly recommend this place for church retreats or just getting away from it all!!!  The only thing I don't like about Epworth is having to leave.

A place of peace and serenity

Just got home from a weekend Women’s retreat through my church. This place is so nice! The grounds are beautiful, the food was tasty, our hotel room was clean with a nice view of the water and the sunset was spectacular!! Already want to go back with hubby.

Beautiful Place!!

We always stay at Epworth when we come for Pastor's School.  The Turner Lodge has been recently updated, and I would recommend it over the other options available.  Our balcony overlooks the river, and my wife loves watching for dolphins who feed up and down the river.  The grounds are beautiful, and a great alternative to the busy public places on the rest of the island.  We love it!

United Methodist Retreat Center on Frederica River

We stayed at the D. Abbott Turner hotel for a retreat with about 200 people. The rooms seem to be newly-updated - flooring, etc. Very clean and comfortable. We ate in the cafeteria. Considering it was cafeteria food I thought they did a great job. The surroundings are beautiful, and the staff was extremely friendly and polite. We had a wonderful visit!!

Wonderful retreat

What a wonderful place this is! Epworth by the Sea really surprised me with the beauty and calm atmosphere. Just seating under the enormous trees on one of the many pews available and I immediately began to relax. Walking around I found the little chapel that's plays the carillon every hour and can be heard at a distance. The sun shines through the amazing stained glass windows at this small and quaint chapel and time seems to stop as I absorbe al that beauty.

So peaceful and beautiful!

It had been many years since I had been Epworth, my loss.  Epworth is a brilliant place. I highly recommend Epworth especially for families and small to medium professional or civic organizations needing meeting space.

They have several different buildings each one a different level of amenities - I stayed in the Pitts Motel  - perhaps the lowest level - but, I I am serious about this - it is very clean and nice. Yes, it basic  - but it is comfortable. I will be staying again. 

I am a very big fan of the restaurant, the food is extremely good (some of it is as good as any food you will find at any five star restaurant on the island). I found both the breakfast and dinner food to be very good.

I was there in April and the outdoor pool was closed - that was disappointing. I hope they change this.

There is a wonderful paved walkway along the water and if you want to go go off property then back on there is a nice little loop which makes for a nice walk  - I took several laps each night.

The meeting rooms are very nice - not the most modern but they are nice - new comfortable chairs would be welcomed. 

The gift shop is OK but it needs some work - they need more quantity and selections in shirts - both tee shirts and polo shirts - and stands like postcards, lapel pins, and magnets could be expanded or added. 

Overall - Epworth is wonderful and a true Georgia treasure.
