I held a retreat here. The women were amazed at the care and delicious, healthy food that was offered in this most amazing setting. The staff continues to make sure that everybody’s needs are met. Food requests are gather ahead of time and the menu is created from those needs. Rooms are authentically maintained. The staff is amazingly considerate and helpful.

Had read about the house and my curiosity insisted that we stay here during our visit to Taos.  We were not disappointed in any way.  The room was comfortable, clean and quiet.  The relaxed atmosphere was welcomed after a couple days of hectic travel.  There is a lot of history associated with the house.  Gives you a good flavor of how the early settlers lived.  They serve a fabulous gourmet breakfast every morning.

Peaceful Rest and Atmosphere

The most memorable stay in a long time. Fantastic atmosphere .. Super friendly... Great old fashion rooms with an amazing fire... And lovely communal breakfast. Wished I could have stayed longer. The best was the sunset and chatting to other guests and making the fire!

An amazing experience

We liked the main house as it was full of charm and ambience. Our room, however, was in the “Juniper House” and our first impression was not good. The stairwell leading up to our room was filled with spider webs and bugs. In fact, one fell on me while ascending the stairs. The room was ok but housekeeping could have done better..the sheets weren’t properly snugged up to the mattress, the headboard was not on the bed frame correctly or something, and I have a feeling there are not enough slats in the bed to hold the box springs. The room could use a deep clean…again, cobwebs in the corners and dusty. With just a little bit of elbow grease, an exterminator, and some attention to the bed, room number seven could be much improved.

The breakfast was nice and again such a charming house but there were spiders climbing the walls. Call an exterminator people!

Wanted to have a fire in the cute fireplace in the room but we had nothing to start it with. Ho hum……price was good, I guess you get what you pay for?

Interesting and ok…could be better

I have wanted to stay in the Solarium room at Mabel Dodge for years.  It looks so light and airy, perched on top of the house.  It did not disappoint!  I surprised my husband with this room, and he was blown away.  There are windows all the way around the room, and the views are spectacular, even from the toilet.  The picture is the view from the toilet.  After a day of sight seeing, we brought back a bottle of wine and sat in the study enjoying the peace.  At breakfast the next morning, we sat with a father and daughter who were from the same area we grew up in!  What are the chances?  We are already planning our next visit, preferably during the full moon.  The only caution I have is that the stairs up to the Solarium are more like a ladder than stairs, so be careful.

Amazing

One the the best things that happened when we where in New Mexico was staying at the Mabel Dodge Luhan house. Filled with history from the entrance to the bedroom! It was an awesome lecture on her life, what a treat. She was a character as well as hers numerous guests including Georgia O’Keefe and D.H. Lawrence. The ladies coordinating the lodging were great, one is an artist, ask her for her postcards. She gave us the best tips on Taos, and lots of stories, she was a marvelous storyteller! Our Andrew Dasburg bedroom was on the second floor of the Juniper House just one minute walking from the main house, and you can’t imagine  the view from our little terrace! The sun awakening just in front of us, marvelous! Breakfast was served only from 8 to 9 at the large dining room, sharing with other guests which was a nice experience as get get to know interesting people. Everyday we had a different delicious option and the kitchen and service personnel were very kind. Will go back anytime we are in New Mexico!

The Luhan house is a walk back in history, yet with comfort and more.
We liked the Mary Austin room with a tub and close to the main room, but also would have like to stay in other rooms.  We were late, due to Covid in booking, so this was the room left.
The breakfast is excellent and the location perfect.

We love the history and warmness of the staff.

The Mabel Dodge Luhan House is an old rambling adobe house that Mabel Dodge Luhan owned. It’s been turned into a Bed and Breakfast/Retreat Center. The House and rooms have the charm of an old house. The parking lot is quite a ways away from the house down a number of steps and beyond with a rough rock lined path to it. We went in and checked in. The ‘Lobby’ is a largish room with several couches and a corner fireplace. 

Our room, the Ansel Adams Room had very thick walls, a pine floor, square beamed ceiling and a corner fireplace (more about that later). The room contains a queen bed, a bed stand, a twin bed an easy chair, wardrobe, writing desk and chair and a bookcase for the towels. The bathroom is small with Mexican tile around the tub. The room is comfortable, but not cozy. It's rather an austere room.

There in one corner is a fireplace build into the wall. The check-in lady had given us a ‘fire-starter kit’ (it was three small pieces of kindling, a little bit of cut up newspaper and some matches). There were directions on it for starting the fire. On the way back from dinner, My wife and I had gotten some wood from the pile near the entrance. There were only large pieces of wood, larger than we would use in our wood stove at home. No kindling. Getting the fire started was a challenge that we failed at (after three tries). We really tried and failed. That was quite a disappointment that seemed to fit our experience here.

Overall, the Mabel Dodge Luhan House had more promise than it delivered.

I Wanted to Like the House More Than I Did

It was a privilege to stay in Mabel's Room at the historic Mabel Dodge Luhan Hotel. The room was lovely and spacious with room for the six of us to gather for conversation. The other room was comfortable as well with each room having a wood fireplace. It was convenient to stay there while touring Taos. We will return during warmer weather. This is a special peaceful place with a quiet place for reading.

Special Place

The Mabel Dodge Luhan House is full of history, particularly for those interested in early 20th C. art and literature. It's an authentic southwestern adobe complex, which has been updated somewhat to accommodate the modern traveler (i.e. indoor plumbing with sinks, showers, and toilets). There is no TV, wifi in the lobby area only, and cell phone reception is sketchy at best. This truly is a location in which to "get away from it all"! I was there on a group retreat and we were served three delicious, healthy meals each day. For those coming not as part of a group, a hearty, healthy breakfast is provided each morning. Travelers wanting or expecting "luxury" may not be happy here, but those seeking out rustic charm in a beautiful setting will be more than pleased.
