The worst and the best in the same place. A just ideal location, the hotel closest to the entrance to the Sequoia National Park. But it would be more of a motel than a hotel.

Parks and Recreation

Made reservations here for a one night stay to visit the Sequoias. The views from the back porch are gorgeous, but that’s the only redeeming factor. Food was extremely overpriced. Rooms are in desperate need of renovation. There was dust and cobwebs on the fan, behind the TV, etc. TV remote didn’t work. Random toothpick was in the nightstand? I worry about the overall cleanliness of this place. In addition, the door to our room didn’t seal at the bottom and lets in a large draft (can be bad in the winter time when we are staying). Overall for the price of what we payed, this place is a no from me. They should be charging closer to $100-150 a night instead. Wouldn’t stay here again.

Overpriced and slightly dirty

Staying nearby we were looking for a place to eat and the minute we walked into Gateway Restaurant we felt right at home. Local bought us a beverage hearing we had traveled far and all those in the bar were friendly and fun. Food and drinks were very good and done well. Like it so much we went back the next daya and ate again - buying t-shirts too! Great place - Kyle was wonderful!

Great food - did not stay at Lodge

This restaurant and lodge makes you want to come back. I did just that, 6 weeks later. The owner and staff are exceptionally friendly and eager to please. The food is excellent and the views are even better. Stayed in room 6 (this trip) and room 7 last time. Both offer great views of the river and surrounding mountains.

This place makes you want to come back!

Enjoyed our recent stay. Great value at $99 per night. And with the big hills of Sequoia National Park, it was great starting out with a full charge thanks to the two onsite Tesla destination chargers. We also enjoyed the restaurant. We drank in the bar upon arrival and ate lunch before we departed the next day. Great food and river views. We’ll definitely stay here again.

Stayed at the Gateway Lodge in room 1 thinking I would have had some access to the river other than the Restaurant, but NO! The room I picked was the closest to the hiway. It was not so bad except for the antiqu ated mini fridge & the hard bed, the TV was maybe 28" but I was able to hook up my laptop & watch Netflix. The Wifi was descent that is why I am giving them 2 stars instead of 1. Bang for the buck $$$$ it was the worse I've ever experienced. I would not ever stay there again, a lesson well learned. $199 on weekdays & $249 on weekends? Who are you kidding?

Was not what I expected

My friends and I were hoping to find a way into Sequoia National Forest and were unsuccessful, but we found this really cool little Restaurant and Lodge. We stopped by to grab a bite to eat. We were allowed to eat out on the patio next to the river. We were mesmerized by the beautiful mountain views and the sound of running water. We were loath to leave. The waitress approached us and informed us that rooms were available and they would offer us a whole cabin for half price. The cabin was rustic with well worn and comfortable furnishings and the patio had plenty of outdoor seating. We made a run to the local grocery store for some snacks and alcohol. We spent the evening on the patio listening to the sounds of nature, watching the cattle graze in the high mountains and conversed about the craziness of life.

We really enjoyed our stay and the food at the restaurant was delicious. We had lunch and breakfast at there and both meals were fresh and plentiful. 

We really enjoyed our stay and will stop by again whenever we are in the area in the future. We really appreciated the hospitality and friendly service!

Great Find

We eat in the gateway on a regular basis and the food is always good, we were there on Sunday evening and had a lovely meal, fish and chips Thai curry and garlic mushrooms were all very tasty, desserts were good and the prices are reasonable also the manager and staff are friendly and efficient, the place is spacious and nicely decorated warm and inviting all in all a lovely place

Friendly place

Actually this is a review of a Christmas day dinner at this restaurant in 2018. I had reservations that were not honored because of a crowd of wannabee diners lined up outside the door. Most had no reservations. When my family was finally seated it was by the door leading into a very noisy kitchen. Conversation with my family was impossible. Dinner was expensive and the gratuitity was automatically added to our bill because staff had volunteered to work on Christmas. I wish the dinners themselves had been worth the expense. We should have just hoofed it to a Denny's. 

Christmas dinner disaster

The people are the most important thing in hospitality and that is exactly what you get when stay or eat at the Gateway - true hospitality.
The owner is right on hand and involved in all aspects of the Lodge.  And it is a lodge, not a hotel.  
But the bar is really first-rate and very well priced for the most well-stocked bar I have seen outside a major city.  And very reasonably priced for high-value scotch and bourbon, etc.
The food is really good.  Certainly above comfort food and great quality and very good portions.
They really care about the menu and the food is great.
Breakfast is suitably abundant as you are normally preparing for a long day of hiking and don't really want to interrupt the experience to stop and eat.

But as I said, the experience is really about the people and the hospitality and the people who work in the restaurant and lodge are the nicest and most accommodating of people.

We 'lost' a flash drive with all our pictures on it but thought it was in the room somewhere.  I called the hotel and spoke with Amanda and asked her to look for the flash drive.  
She checked with housekeeping and while it hadn't been turned into Lost and Found - she must have turned the room upside down but did find our flash drive and mailed it back to us!

Well, for my wife - if she doesn't have pictures then it didn't happen so we got our vacation in the Sequoia National Forest back!
I will absolutely return to the Forest as it as an amazing and unforgettable and most definitely repeatable experience and I will definitely be staying at Gateway again.

I would give the Lodge 5 stars but the rooms still need some work but it has the charm to bring it to 4 stars and the staff that make you feel at home.
