The Hotel El Capitan is comfortable with a bit of nostalgia. The food at the hotel was good, but pricey. I was very satisfied with the hotel since I was just an overnight stop on my trip. The staff were friendly and courteous. 

Overnight Stop

A charming oasis we discovered on our way to visit family in Texas. Warm and inviting, Christmas music playing, decorations in Lobby, a lovely restaurant and rooms reminiscent of Europe. We had our dog with us and had a most memorable stay! My only criticism was the continental breakfast. Nothing to take on the road, but that’s okay! Loved it!

What a Nice Surprise!

This was our first stay at the El Capitan, and we loved it.  We used to stay at a nearby Hampton Inn coming and going between Tucson and San Antonio but then discovered this hotel through a friend.  El Capitan is charming with a yesteryear vibe.  The room was comfortable and had a large balcony overlooking the front courtyard.  We did not eat dinner there, but the menu looked good.  And El Capitan was less expensive than the other hotel, saving us a couple hundred dollars round trip to boot.  I definitely recommend it.

Charming and affordable 

If you are passing through Van Horn, TX and decide to spend the night, skip the budget and chain motels and opt for the Hotel El Capitan! Rooms are small but cozy, the fireplace in the lobby is a great place to warm up after a long day on the 10, and the hotel is not just pet friendly but has some of the thickest, softest grass for your furry friend to enjoy. We have never been disappointed saying here, and would encourage all travelers to step back into the history of Van Horn. Bonus: check out the Eagles Nest! 

Step back into history! 

Everyone was friendly and accommodating. The lobby was nicely decorated   for Christmas. The dining room had great food and easy breakfast . El Capitan is a cool place to stay whether passing thru or to climb in the surrounding area. We will be back!

Great place to stay

Our king room on the second visit was rather small and the bathroom was smaller than any other room we have seen. The breakfast was good if you did not like the eggs. Both visit they were badly over cooked. 
If you are a light sleeper, the train noise will wake you up a few times during the night. 
The lobby and facility are great. They did a great job of renovation.

Second visit to El Capitan

This hotel is absolutely beautiful.  Very nice rooms, excellent staff, good prices. The bar is limited and the food is excellent!

Have a limited fire place area to sit and relax as well as a beautiful entryway with a fountain that get you starting to relax from a long days travel.

Vacation

Hotel El Capitan has been a favorite stop for many years on our way to and from Arizona; however this time we noticed the hotel was in need of maintenance. We paid extra for a patio room and it was dirty with the electrical box dangling.  Dinner in the restaurant was the pecan crusted salmon and it was not good, but breakfast was worse. We expressed our concerns to the desk clerk who seemed uninterested.  We'll not be going back, unfortunately because Hotel El Capitan has been a fun experience in the past.

Old and Tired

Loved our stay. The hotel has been restored to more than 'original'. One has to appreciate the workmanship and craftsmanship that went into the original hotel as well as the upkeep now.. The staff was superb throughout and I want to point out Robert in particular who was cook/chef in the morning. His personality could speak for all. The rooms and beds were comfortable as we enjoyed our balcony overlooking the courtyard.  The dining room had a superb menu...can't say anything but we fully enjoyed our stay. 

Top Notch

We had a wonderful stay. The hotel is beautiful and they have maintain the quaintness of the era it was built. Staff was friendly and accommodating. A self-serve breakfast which included eggs, sausage, potatoes, waffles, and an assortment of breads and muffins as well as yogurt was provided with the room. We also had a great dinner at the restaurant. I highly recommend both.
