The shower curtain is disgusting.  There are no night lights in dorm 1.  The liquid soap has been diluted.  The three fridges are overflowing and each has its' own particular aroma.  It was sheer agony trying to open the door to dorm 1.  I had the correct code but the door would not open.  Check-in Michael is rude beyond words.  I felt very uncomfortable the first night and told Ryan I wanted a refund to avoid "pain and suffering" on all sides.  I was granted a full refund: however, I was soon thereafter, for no reason banished from the hostel and property.  The text to me read, "If you come back it will be considered trespassing and you will be arrested."  That was cruel and totally uncalled for and undeserved.  The situation was very poorly handled.  Trained chimps could have done it better.

Management leaves a lot to be desired....

I wanted to say, and having stayed at many hostels over time, this hostel is absolutely fantastic!  I would not have come to Martha's Vineyard if I didn't call ahead of time and get excellent service over the phone.  The genetleman assured me I could do Martha's vineyard on a budget and how I can get around the island from the hostel without a car.  When I arrived I was warmly greeted by Chirs and he continued to be excellent and hospiitable my entire stay.  The last day my phone didn't work and the manager, didn't get his name unfortunetly, went out of his way to help me try to dry my phone out and get it charged.  I have stayed in many hostels but this is easily some of the best service I have had staying at one.  Thank you all staff I met there for going above and beyond!

MARTHA’S VINEYARD HOLIDAY ACCOMMODATION GOES THRU THE ROOF IN SUMMER…..

….but Hosteling International gives bucks-down travelers a chance to stay.

Admittedly sharing a dorm with other people isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but you wouldn’t be reading this if you fit that demographic.
OK the hostel is not in a touristy place – right in the middle of the island in a very rural area with no neighbours. But the thing is, with a bus stop our front and MARTHAS’ network of cycling tracks passing by, you are never more than a half hour from most island attractions.
Other advantages of this location – very quiet. People thinking road noise be aware the buildings are abt 100m from the passing traffic.
- of course land values and rentals are lowest here.
But this location aint perfect - no nearby shops: good idea to stock up on groceries etc off the ferry because the nearest limited chance is in WEST TISBURY1 mile west (passing buses are on an hourly basis).

THE HOSTEL ITSELF
- very relaxed environment. Lots of external areas (parking no problem) and spacious interiors with public areas not squeezy.
- the 2 guys running the show were very organised: quick check-in, run thru the rules yada. The place was very clean. Kitchen and storage areas spacious. Dorms comfy with the usual HI solid bunks. Bathrooms adequate.
- free WIFI variable but good in the common room.

TIPS = If like me you are pushed for time, the gingerbread houses of OAKS BLUFF can be done off the ferry or just before departing (only a few hundred meters SW of the OAK’S BLUFF pier) and the period building and sights of EGARTOWN’S main street (plus the nearby harbour area) after dark. As a matter of fact this area is very nice by lamplight.
- MARTHA’S bus system is not expensive but has an unusual charging system based on how many towns passed thru – if doing multiple destinations in one day, the good value DAY PASS may be the go.

SUM UP – with accommodation a fraction of alternatives, this one becomes a genuine bargain.

Top Deck Island on a Poverty Pack Budget.

HI Martha's Vineyard is a great facility. We have stayed in lots of Youth Hostels all over the world and this was great.
Youth Hostels are not 5* hotels but comfortable places to stay. This one has great staff who were helpful before we arrived and during our stay. Big shout out the Chris in particular. We stayed in a dorm room which we don't usually do (usually try to get private room but not available at this hostel). Room was clean and beds comfortable. Bed linen and towels provided. We are in our 50s and did not feel out of place, hostel had a wide range of age groups staying including 2 groups of summer camp children who gave the place a lively atmosphere ( they were well behaved and polite!). Free DIY breakfast of oatmeal, pancakes and toast - the bread was brown multi grain and some of the best bread I have ever eaten in USA. The bus stops right outside the hostel which make travel without a car very convenient. Bike rack and parking available, big outdoor area with BBQ for use.
The rooms do not have air conditioning but they did have electric fans set up in the windows which helped.
Once again this is a great Youth Hostel not a 5* hotel. Would definitely stay there again if we are fortunate  enough to make it back to Martha's Vineyard.

First Time Hostelling!!

1) The place was BROILING. No air conditioning in a lace with no breeze whatsoever means thismid-Island location is stifling on a hot suumer’s day — or night! Plus the other reviewer wrote exactly what we thought: captive audience in ultra-pricey, sold-out resort area, so expectations are low. We had the stinky pillows and metallic/disinfectant-smelly bedding, noise from dormmates and hallway, etc. Noplace to secure walleg of passport while showering, no effort to cover basics (WiFi was spotty, which apparently “does happen here”), etc. Nutty bus schedule meant waiting half an hour to board, then almost an hour to ride, change buses (get transfer before exiting Bus A), etc. — all for a trip that was abouf 8 miles as crow flies. I can’t imagine where all the other globetrotting hostelers who love it here have been staying, but this was a big letdown. Writeups posted before 2018 reflect people and amenities long-gone: not all that clean, not all that friendly, no pancakes, yet noise factor’s worse than ever. Hosts are more theoretical than anything: phone never answered except by automation, our polite, brief, daily query messages all ignored, and no-one to turn to when rowdy roommates keep you up half the night. Yes, you can sleep it off on the beach, but is that why you came to MV? Hardly. We all wished we’d stayed at an off-Island hostel of B&B and made it a day trip. Who in this day and age builds a brand-new facility with toilet squeezed in midst of “private room with bath” AND omits the A.C. as well as half-decent WiFi?!? At least on Nantucket they’re on the edge of the beach — with a breeze 95% of the time. And it’s clean, friendly and well-run.

The HI Martha's Vineyard is a wonderful place to spend your Vineyard Summer holiday. The bedroom, kitchen, and den are sparkling clean. The bus stops at the Hostel. The Hostel staff is highly professional and helpful. The nightly rates are most reasonable.

Great Location, Sparkling Clean, Great Staff

This is my 2nd hostel I have used within HI Hostel. I was disappointed to have no AC but you don't really need it as there is enough of a breeze at night. Staff was helpful, explained best way to get around island(the public bus), local beaches and activities. What I will say is that some more cleaning by other guests need to be enforced. One of the staff did share her eclipse glasses with me during the solar eclipse and I appreciated it. Some older staff may help increase the traveling experience. Overall it was a great place and I would visit again.
