Dishonest business- Consumers be aware!!! Hotel Volcano Inn refused to provide a refund to our reservation when we canceled more than 72 hours in advance.  The hotel staff was condescending when we asked for cash back instead of of issued credit.  Very disappointing

We booked the room last minute. (Lucky us! They had a full house 15 minutes after our arrival)
The place was outstanding: clean, and comfortable, with the gorgeous ground and a tasteful dining hall.
Hawaiian breakfast was delicious: especially coffee and banana bread.
Evening and morning staff members were very helpful and personal.
Thank you very much Taby and Caisie (Sorry, might be misspelling the names).
You made our trip to Volcano!

Gorgeous,comfortable, clean and inviting place!

Loved it here. Office girl, Tabby, was so cute and funny. Nice to have local families working at local businesses. She had the scoops about where to go and what to see. Rain forest was lovely, birds and frogs were ambiance through the day and night. Breakfast was wonderful! Tabby served us the best banana bread & papaya boats. 

Volcano Inn is AWESOME! 

Front desk did not give us good information about best place to see the volcano! There are 2 sides to see it -- one side is much closer and bigger view (you need to walk along a road to get to it, maybe 1/2 mile) and the other side has closer parking, but you only see 1/4 of the view, and from greater distance. I sprained my ankle in the parking lot -- there was an edge along a parking line that you couldn't see because of the parked cars. Most people ate takeout in their rooms, we had a microwave. The nearby restaurants are packed. Bring your own food!

Though the place seemed ideal when we pulled in, we realized quickly that the main road across the island goes by. So there is traffic noise night and day. Also, a water pump goes on every 15 min for about 30 seconds all day and night.

We stayed here for two nights and found the stay enjoyable.  Older lodging that has been well kept that were clean and comfortable.  They have a simple breakfast of coffee, juice and a papaya boat with healthy ingredients.  Those who like a more substantial meal can go to the Volcano House for their breakfast

Simple Pleasures

No more than a hostel this place, but charging hotel prices, very primitive and basic. Good location to the volcano but that's all it has going. Beds and bed linen absolutely awful and should have been replaced years back, advertises a hot tub but not working and covered up. Don't know about the breakfast,  we left at 5am to get the hell out and go somewhere decent. All in all, very poor and disappointing .save your money...

It's only a hostel and a pretty poor one at that.

Stayed here for 3 nights - very cosy and only a couple of miles from the Volcano park. Breakfast was decent (banana bread & papaya with some stuff on top, I was mainly there for the coffee), but the hot tub unfortunately didn't go up past luke warm. The view of the tree tops from our windows felt like we were in some kind of paradise jungle, it was pretty epic.

Stayed at the Volcano Inn for one night on my recent trip to the Big Island. We wanted accommodations close to the National Park, and both audibly gasped when we drove in to the parking lot. This beautiful property is right in the middle of a lush rainforest, and surrounded by beautiful anthurium flowers. The rooms are quaint, but clean and have everything you need for a short stay. We fell asleep with the windows open so we could listen to the rain and the sounds of the rainforest, it was beautiful and so memorable. Staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, and even stayed late to greet us when we arrived later than expected. Breakfast was fresh, and the smell of the homemade banana bread filled the dining room in a wonderful way. Upon reflection, my boyfriend and I both agreed that this was our favorite hotel that we stayed in, and wished that we had booked a second night just to experience the property a little more.

Once in a lifetime accomodations

TL;DR - Covid forced us to cancel our reservation in the spring of 2020. Volcano Inn gave us a one-year credit, but of course travel was still restricted after one year, so they extended our credit again. However, when we finally tried to rebook, they refused to honor our credit.

The full story:

3/16/20 - We emailed to cancel our two-night reservation because of Covid.

3/30/20 - Vocano Inn issued a partial refund for one night. The second night was converted into a one-year credit. (I asked if they could simply refund us for both nights, but they said no.)

2/16/21 - California (where we live) was still banning non-essential travel. I emailed to request either a) a refund; or b) another extension of our credit.

2/16/21 - Volcano Inn replied: "Yes, we can definitely extend your credit since the pandemic is still unfortunately going strong. Just let us know whenever you have new dates and we can reschedule your reservation for you. Mahalo, Hotel Volcano Inn." (Note that there was no mention in this reply of a time limit or deadline.)

2/16/21 - I replied: "Thank you so much. We definitely want to come when it's safe . . . and when it fits with our vacation time." (Volcano Inn did not reply.)

8/18/22 - I contacted the inn to rebook. They replied that our credit had expired. 

8/18/22 - I asked them to reconsider and reminded them of their email from 2/16/21. They replied: "After reviewing your reservation in detail, we could not find the reason why you were entitled to any credit at all."

8/20/22 - I reminded them of their email of 2/16/21. (No reply.)

8/23/22 - I emailed again. (No reply.)

8/28/22- I emailed again. They finally replied but again said  our credit had expired. They claimed that their 2/16/21 email should have been understood to mean they were giving us a one-year extension on the credit. 

8/28/22 - I pointed out that the 2/16/21 email *did not* contain anything about a deadline or a time limit. They replied, "We are sorry that you read it that way."

There you have it. Volcano Inn did not honor their word, and they've cheated my family out of a one-night stay.
