The place of course is old since it's inside a national park.  Check in lady was friendly and helpful.  However, there is no elevator to second floor.  She was more willing to help carry the luggage up the stairs for you though.

Just like other national park lodge, room was very small.  It doesn't have enough table space.  

It's very conveniently located inside the national park.  VNP is pretty close to Hilo.  I will probably stay in Hilo and just drive in unless you want to star glaze at night which was what we did.  The area was pitch black.  perfect for stars glazing.  The night sky was beautiful.

Overall, pretty satisfied with the stay.  Restaurant was expensive as expected but the rib eye steak was excellent.  Staff can be hit or miss as the rest of Hawaii big island.  Not everyone was friendly like the usual Hawaiian perception.

Conveniently located inside VNP but room is small and old.

Terrible service. The staff are unfriendly and on occasion downright rude. They have something of a captive market and act like they know it. If you have the option of staying somewhere else, take it. 

Unfriendly staff

Very basic rooms, tired and slightly scruffy with virtually no facilities. Really in need of refurbishment.
Restaurant menu equally needs improving with very little choice. However, what choices there were available were of an O.K. standard.
Given the prices charged, my advice would be to consider alternative accommodation.

Disappointing 

We stayed 4 nights. Perfect location. You can walk the trails from the lodge. Great food at the restaurants. Down sides no tv, no air conditioning, no mini frig. We stayed on the fist floor which was a big mistake. You could hear people stomping on the floor above u constantly. We were woke up at 1am, 330am and 6am. Our sleep was bad the entire time. Overall it's the best place to stay that I seen around here

We stopped here for a quick lunch while visiting the park. Our food was great, the service was very good, and the view was terrific. Prices are a little high. Conveniently located near the visitor center.

Great Food; Great View

Lovely old, historic hotel. Only about 25 rooms.  We were on the rim side upstairs and view of the volcano.  We kept watching it so we’re a little sleep deprived. Our room was large with king bed and a couch.  There was large closet.  Outer vanity and sink in bathroom too.  Lovely room and quiet in the trees.  Sometimes had to park across road at visitor center as some parking spots were used for the restaurant.  Close enough to walk to visitor center and overlooks.

Is it a bit expensive… Maybe. Is the food good… Yes! Is the outside view exceptional? Absolutely! Landon, our server, was great. Super friendly, super honest. 10/10! To watch the sunset and the light from Kilauea slowly filling up the sky is magical. It’s a once in a lifetime experience.

Totally worth it!

We love to stay at National Park lodges and this one was one of our favorite experiences so far strictly because the location was unique and amazing.  We had two view rooms for our family - one crater view and one deluxe crater view - and both were acceptable but dated.  Rooms were pretty clean but we spotted a short hair on the floor of the bath room upon checkin.  They set out water like it’s complimentary but have a teeny tiny sign saying it’s not and you have to pay (huge pet peeve - either make it available for sale in the lobby or make it free but this way can trick people, even if the price is reasonable).  Definitely bring ear plugs if you’re sensitive to noise as you can hear everything from other rooms and the hallway in the deluxe crater room (examples: neighbors snoring; any nearby plumbing use; anyone talking or walking next door, upstairs, or in the hallway).  Be prepared in the regular crater view room for finicky water (either cold or scalding).  But when we were there we could see the lava lake glowing and the steam cloud glowing red and we did some nice hikes right out of the hotel, so that made the stay worth it.  Just know you’re paying high prices for basic accommodations in a great location.  Also, the Rim was not a great experience for dinner and was the only choice for breakfast so we chose instead to drive into Volcano for a simple and very local breakfast.

Great location makes other issues tolerable

We stayed at the hotel for one night as part of our Island-hopping Hawaiian holiday.  

It is a small hotel and the rooms are fine.  Our room was not huge or high-end luxury but had everything you would need (including some lovely toiletries) and everything worked.  

The staff were great and very attentive to our needs, the food in the dining room was excellent and we had some beautifully made cocktails.

The main reason for staying in the area is for the volcanos.  The situation of the Volcano House hotel is on the rim of an active volcano and we were lucky enough to be there whilst Kilauea was still erupting.  This is a stay I will never forget.

Staying at the Volcano House, the National Park Lodge for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is an incredible experience.  The lodge isThe lodge is literally built on the rim of the Kilauea. The restaurant has large plate, glass windows, allowing you to look down into the Kilauea caldera while having dinner. You can even look down into this very active volcano from many of the hotel rooms. The lodge is a great launching point for many hikes, and scenic drives. We stayed at the Volcano House in December and given the season and altitude, we really appreciated the roaring fire in the old stone fireplace in the lobby after a hike along the rim of the Kīlauea volcano crater. The food at the lodge was a real surprise. I was not expecting such outstanding dining experience, and we really enjoyed warming up by the fire Finally, I have to say a word about the incredible staff at the Volcano House. Across the board everyone is helpful, cheerful, and anxious to make sure that your stay is enjoyable.

Look down into an active volcano from your room or while enjoying an outstanding meal.
