I love the history here. try to get one of the old buildings. great hikes. great pools..two big ones. one bothersome thing is they allow people to save pool chairs. Super annoying. golf course is really pretty. wild turkeys and pumpkins. 

so worth it...

we had a good stay here-the cabin was roomy, comfy beds and overall very clean; staff was very friendly. there is a washer and dryer on the property (coin operated, the security guard will give change and provide soap). It is right across the golf course (great meals!!) and post office/gas mart. Indeed the walls are a bit thin and you can hear your neighbours if they are very loud but it was ok. 
there is no TV and the wifi was a bit sketchy.
The grounds need a facelift and are not very charming...so not really a place for a romantic getaway but we just needed a quiet and comfy place tl rest our feet and this was perfect!

The resort is challenged by the owner’s (single person from La Jolla) lack of funds and interest in ever restoring this place, which is really sad. The beautiful website promises a glorious spot that reflects the grandeur one experienced here. I stayed 7 nights and was amazed at the fact that almost NOTHING is happening on the grounds. A restoration project of this magnitude should have contractors everywhere working to create the resort as promised by the website. I saw a single worker now and then for 4-5 hours - not enough to restore this place. The chain link fence (keeping guests from most of resort) around the cabin rentals was ugly.
Cabins were cold with excessive air leaks through windows and doors. Ditto to noise from adjacent units, no hair dryers, no microwave . Cleaning was minimal. Our unit was not swept or vacuumed during our entire stay. Landscaping is totally ignored and dying for lack of water. Staff exhibited low morale, and treated us like we were an inconvenience not guests. It is a sad and depressing place to stay- remnants of a once amazing place that will never be restored without a huge influx of capital and an owner who is committed to historic revitalization/restoration/upgrading

“Rustic “ room, no amenities, little charm, chain link fencing....it’s all here

my husband and i have stayed here a couple of times, but it was before they filed for bankruptcy and shuttered the ranch in 2012.  back when we visited, all the amenities were available, including a "fancy" restaurant, a more casual cantina (with live music on the weekends), large swimming pools (one with water from the natural hot springs on the property), shops, spa, tennis, golf, horseback-riding, etc.  

it was an amazing get-away for us, as the rustic nature of the place was to our liking, i.e., no tv or phone in the room (i don't think they even had wi-fi back then).  but it was very quiet – and we loved soaking in the pool with natural hot-spring water until we were pickled, while gazing up at a clear, starry night sky.

... flash forward to now... only about a dozen of the rooms have been upgraded with new paint/carpet and new bathroom fixtures, plus a mini-fridge and tiny coffee maker (but not new mattresses, as my back can attest to, and still not enough of a sound barrier between rooms as we could hear our neighbors talking and snoring) – and then that's the extent of the "ranch" – almost everything else is off bounds, it appears mostly due to 6 years of no maintenance.  they are reportedly working on completing the spring-fed and other pool, and we heard they'll open them this june...

but they're clearly strapped for cash to even have enough folks to really run the place.  there's no "check in" staff, just the lovely, but clearly over-worked woman running the gas mart across the street; and they cannot even keep up with the weeding around the few cottages that are open, so the overall vibe is one of neglect.

and not having all the other amenities would be fine if they were really honest about it – but they don't really mention any of what's really happening on their website!

Warner Springs Ranch Resort (a portion of the resort to reopen in 2019) features a 27,000 square-foot main lodge, 250 cabin units, 2 restaurants, meeting facilities, 4 tennis courts, equestrian facilities, a spa, 3 swimming pools, campgrounds, a private airport, horseback riding and a championship 18-hole golf course and grill, gas mart, post office and medical buildings."

...uh, so clearly most all of that is not really true... 

bottom line - if you're in the area, and you're looking for a somewhat affordable spot to lay your head for the night (note: their room rates are for one person, and an extra person is an extra $15/night!), then this could be a good place for you.  

if you play golf, the course across the street is back up and running, and there is a restaurant there, plus, they have beer/wine and snack items at the gas mart.  and i believe the campground and airport are also open.

but beyond that, none of the previous amenities (and the main reason for some of us to go – the hot springs pool) are not currently open – and if you're going there, that information should be MUCH more clear on their website. 

i hope the new owner/developer can complete the renovations to the pools and all the other parts of the main property.  this was a unique and relaxing place to visit (we usually go in the spring to see the wildflower bloom in anza borrego 30 minutes away) – but there appears to have been a lot of promises made, and not very many of them kept, which feels very sad to us, and i'm sure to many others as well.  we're very hopeful that the old charm can return... we'll just have to stay tuned.

our room was okay – but most ranch amenities not currently available

This place has potential. It has been under renovation by a fairly new owner who is disliked by the community because of his apparent lack of dedication to getting this place renovated. The resort closed in 2012 but a few of the 250 cabins are open. They have been updated. There are no phones and no TVs, which is kind of refreshing.

We used to come here when the hot mineral pool and cold pool were working, the lodge was serving food and Korean people were BBQing on the porches (a no-no because of the fire hazard...this property is built in a forest). At that time, it had a really cool vibe.

Now the vibe has disappeared. 3/4 of the property is fenced off, due to renovation work, which has been slow. If you ask, you will be told the pools will be open "next year." And every year after that, the answer is the same. Most of the shrubs around the cabins have been cut to nubs, cabins are clean and charming and, in the cold months, the space heaters do not heat the freezing bathroom. But the hot shower thaws you out. They have portable air conditioners for the summer.

The people who run the place are friendly. 

I'd recommend a visit. Arrive with low expectations and you will not be disappointed. There is a bunch of great hiking around here. The WSR is a mile or two from two entrances to the Pacific Crest Trail on HWY 79.  You will also be about 20-something miles from Wynola and Julian, the latter of which is an historic mining town. 

If WSR is ever renovated to the level promised, it will definitely be a destination spot. Until then, it's just a cheap place to sleep and unwind.

Rustic. Very rustic.

Stayed there for one night and booked two rooms as we were traveling with another couple. This place was built in the 20s and is currently in the midst of a major renovation project. Pools, hot springs, and other amenities are closed. I think only ten units are available to stay in. Our rooms were clean, quiet and comfortable and we felt pretty secluded. We spent the evening out on the porch and gazing at the stars which were bright and beautiful. Units had portable air conditioners which did the job but were pretty loud. I think I woke up whenever it cycled on or off. Room has no tv or phone.

All that said, everyone in our party agreed that we would stay here again when returning to the area. If you decide to stay here, be aware that check-in is currently done across the street at the gas station. We had no problems checking in or out. If you are looking for peace and quiet in a rustic, middle of nowhere setting without the frills of a luxury hotel, this might be a good place for you as well.
