What a wonderful place! It starts with the road into the property through a dense woods so that when you arrive, you almost feel like you've entered another world. And in some ways you have because you are staying at an estate built for a wealthy Dubuque family. We were lucky to be sharing that main house with only one other couple while there and so basically had the run of the house to ourselves: the living room, the porch, the patio, the grounds! Superb for relaxing and recharging. Grammy's room was very nice: extremely comfortable bed, very clean, nice view, room to unpack and a cute private bathroom across the hall. We hope to return some day.

So glad we stayed here!

Nice and cozy bed and breakfast. Beautiful view of the Mississippi River.  The grounds around the bed and breakfast is pretty and feels calm and quiet. The breakfast is good.  Definitely would stay again.

Nice bed and breakfast

Our stop in Dubuque was last minute, we happened to be in the area when the minor league game was being played at the field of dreams nearby. My wife stumbled upon this place searching the internet. We booked the main suite in the White House. We ended up being the only ones staying in that house so we had the whole thing to ourselves. It is definitely decorated with period furniture. Our suite was huge and very comfortable. The period furniture made it seem very quaint.

Our breakfast was in the grey house. There was on,y one guest from that house who joined us so it seemed very intimate. I was surprised that they didn’t really ask about breakfast preferences. While touring the main floor I did stop in and tell them what not to include from what I saw they were fixing. We lucked out and we’re they on a biscuits and gravy day. I swear that this was the best sausage gravy I’ve ever had. 

We did walk around the grounds before breakfast and it is very nice.

Our only regret was that we only were able to stay one night.

A great experience

We absolutely loved the appearance of our room. We stayed in the Majestic River Suite in the Grey house for one night for our 24th anniversary. The room was spacious, with one king size bed in the room, with an additional queen size bed in the non-air-conditioned porch (with glass windows). We had our own bathroom with tub/shower combo and sink. There were robes for us to use and plenty of towels. I do wish they put conditioner in the bathrooms. The grounds were beautiful. We lay in a hammock for awhile and listened to the birds in the trees, we took a walk on the path around the grounds, and we saw a group of wild turkeys right outside our house. I so wish we could say the same for how we slept though! It was a terrible night of sleep for both my husband and I. The mattress was super uncomfortable. We both had sore backs in the morning, and it was truly one of the worst mattresses I've slept on at a hotel in a long time. Additionally, it was FREEZING in our room. Like maybe 60 degrees at the MOST, and we had no way to adjust the temperature. We could have chosen to sleep on the non air-conditioned porch, but it was 90 degrees outside and so that wasn't really an option either. If we could have had a better night sleep I would have given the location 5 stars! In the morning, breakfast was kind of a mess. They didn't have enough juice so that each of the 8 people eating could have a small (like 4 oz) glass, saying that they were out. We had to ask for silverware after our food was served, then ask for napkins, then ask for coffee. The meal was fine, but we were served the canned pillsbury crescent rolls which was kind of disappointing. I would have rather just had a nice piece of toast, but everyone is different. If they would just add a nicer mattress and make the temperature closer to 70/72 degrees inside it would have been a really nice place. As is, I can't imagine going back which is really sad!

beautiful rooms and grounds, but uncomfortable sleeping

Fourteen of us, ranging in ages from 1 to 68, stayed at the Grey House for 6 nights. It was absolutely fabulous!  Amazing memories for all of us!  Marie, Jill, and Jay made sure we had everything we needed, from a PackNPlay to wood for the fire pit and gas for the grill. There were fresh flowers in every room when we arrived, along with fresh basil and 3 beautiful tomatoes on the kitchen table. Beds were very comfortable, AC worked great, plenty of towels in the bathrooms. The grounds were gorgeous; wild turkeys (including 6 babies!) and deer roaming around. Jay knows so much fascinating history of the house and area!  And he is dedicated to restoring and decorating everything accurately. We were so impressed with not only the work that has been done at Four Mounds, but how the Foundation is giving back to the community as well.

Better than 5 stars!

Now that I discovered Four Mounds as a BnB, I'll check first for availability, anytime I need a place to stay in Dubuque. It was the perfect retreat for respite and relaxation during my visit. The Majestic Suite is exceptional. Marie was a delightful host and the breakfasts were delicious.

Why would I stay anywhere else?

I stayed at the White House and our whole family was there. It is more than comfy and the old house is amazing. The property has so much history that the Inn keeper Marie knows all the old stories. The whole property has hiking trails and great views! We brought our own food and never left the property all weekend. We all felt very Covid safe!

An amazing place!!

We have been coming here for a long time. But every time we come it’s like the first time again and again. If you want to stay in a unique, beautiful place (in my opinion, it’s the prime location in Dubuque), Definitely visit here! Social distancing at its best. Our recent visit was something special. SNOW!!! incredible beauty! 
Overall, it’s the cleanest , most characteristic place to stay! But the star of Four Mounds, is Marie! Incredible service and the nicest woman you would ever meet! She puts her heart and soul into this place! 
Thank you for everything! And we will be back!

Best Place in Dubuque!

I am the owner of Everybody Bend Yoga in Cedar Rapids, IA and when I thought about where to host my first yoga retreat, Four Mound was it! I'd personally stayed at the Marvin Gardens cabin several times, so it was an easy sell to think about renting out the Grey House with another yoga studio owner to hold the retreat. As always, Marie was extremely helpful and the Grey House and grounds were PERFECT. We had eight participants for the retreat and we held it in January 2020 - Friday through Sunday. Four Mounds is easy to find, and the rooms, house and cabin were beautifully decorated for the holidays, which the participants loved. We'd asked to use the dining room for yoga and it was emptied out when we got there, which was perfect. It was so nice that there's a pocket door and the lights are on dimmer so it "felt" like a cozy yoga space. The kitchen was perfect for preparing the meals and everyone took their food and ate in the living room. The living room fireplace was ablaze the whole weekend and Marie and Jay were extremely helpful when we ran low on wood. It was nice for the other instructor and me to stay separately in the cabin - but all our participants wanted to see it too, and commented on how perfect it was for a solo retreat. There's so much natural beautiful in this location, which makes it perfect for our event. Even though it snowed, the participants went outside to go check out the trails too, and we all saw a bald eagle multiple times. The cabin and the Grey House had everything we needed and I heard from the participants that the beds were "so comfortable." If you're looking for a retreat space or just a getaway, this is the place to go! Reasonably priced, great service, and just the right vibe.

Cozy location for our Get Cozy Retreat

my wife and I spent a night at the Four Mounds a couple of weeks ago.  We stayed in the main house and had a great room with a second "screened in" room with a bed.  It was nice to sleep in the breeze with all the windows open.
The grounds are beautiful and we enjoyed walking around.
Breakfast was good but everyone had to eat at 9am.
The only person from the Four Mounds that we actually met was the lady who was busy making us breakfast. So there was no chatting with the proprieter.
Apparently the owner doles not enjoy meeting guests.
