We stayed for here for one night as part of a group booking with about a dozen rooms. 

Service was good and our rooms were of a good quality, certainly better than most of the photos on previous reviews. 

Facilities within the hotel are good and it's well located in walking distance to the Centre of town as well as the marina. 

Good Hotel, friendly staff

I've been to Punta del Este twice, and twice I have stayed in Americana Hotel. I went there twice on the New Year's (2010/11 and 2011/12 respectively). Basically the main point of the hotel is its location: steps away from the bus station, los dedos, calle Gorlero. 
The hotel is simple and neat. The service is good, people are friendly.
It's on the 100 dollar range, which is cheap for Punta. Much more attractive than sharing a bed on a hostel if you ask me, which is the alternative your money can buy, at least on high season.

Good value for what you pay.

Let me start by saying that my negative review is related to the hotel only and in no way to Punta del Este which I loved and consider a top holiday destination. The reason we stayed in Hotel Americana was because the dates around Christmas and New Years are peak season for Punta and hotels will not book you unless you stay for 7 nights or so. Our trip was short and we booked last minute so we ended up in this terrible hotel.

The rooms have not been redecorated since the 80s and the bathrooms probably even earlier. An average sized person can barely fit in the shower and you are lucky if you got some hot water (interchanging with cold for the duration of your shower). The rooms don't have A/C - instead a noisy ceiling fan which you need to keep running all night to keep the heat and mosquitoes away. Breakfast was less than basic (don't expect a buffet or pancakes and scrambled eggs). I'm not sure if they serve any other meals cause we didn't have any.

The hotel is located centrally but that doesn't help a lot since anything of interest in the area is outside the center so you definitely need a car especially if you are there on New Years when taxis are hard to find. It is however very close to the central bus station.

We were charged $150 a night in cash all upfront which doesn't surprise me as their policy cause if we hadn't paid we would have turned around and left on first glance of the rooms.

Dreadful hotel in an otherwise amazing destination. Look for something better and book early.
