I would highly recommend staying here if you plan to do the Dong Van Loop. It's about 5km away from the city center in a small and beautiful village. I arrived on a night bus at 4am and paid 70,000d for a taxi ride to 'Thon Tha Tay village - Thien homestay'. They were so kind and welcoming. Included is free breakfast, and they offer lunch and dinner options which is a multi-course meal. The money goes to supporting their village and culture. After breakfast I hiked through the villages and to a waterfall. They arranged a motorbike company to pick me up the next day for the Dong Van Loop. Ha Giang city proper is not much other than a small city, and the village was a like a destination in itself. Highly recommend. 

Beautiful and authentic

Last week I've been to Thon Tha Village in Ngiem homestay. Best choice I have ever made! The people are so friendly, food is great, from the balcony you have an amazing view over the rice paddies and it is amazing to see how they are living there. We hired a motorbike for 2 days and discovered the area. We went to the twin mountains, the cave and the waterfal. It's absolutely amazing in that area.  I recommend Ngiem homestay to everyone!

Great experience 

I had just crossed the border from Yunnan, China and needed a place to stay in Ha Giang. This homestay was recommended by Johnny, the original motor bike trip organizer in Ha Giang. I felt like this home was truly an oasis. Both the Thien and his wife speak a fair amount of English and are always looking out for their guests. We ate delicious fresh food from their farm cooked by both of them. Some of the best spring rolls I have ever had. As this is the first home you will come to as you enter the village of Thon Tha it is very peaceful and easy to find. There are other homestays in the village if their home is full. The price was exceptionally reasonable. Thien also took me a on motorbike trek up into the mountains to visit a Dzhao community.. You can learn much about how the people here use their environment in daily life. It was fascinating. I returned to Thien's after a tour around Dong Van and Meo Vac. I will go back again.

My favorite place in Vietnam

We learned about Mr. Thien's homestay in Thon Tha from a fellow traveller in Ha Giang province. My boyfriend and I stayed for two nights and had a wonderful experience. Mr. Thien and his wife, Chan are very friendly and hospitable. We had several delicious meals with the family and fellow guests - very, very good food and a huge selection (including many vegetarian options). The homestay is designed based on the way that Tay people live, providing a mattress on the floor and curtains for privacy dividing the room. It was very relaxing in the mornings with the sounds of nature and no traffic. We also went on a trek organized by Mr. Thien, which was superb. Highly recommend visiting Thon Tha and staying with Mr. Thien's homestay while you are in Ha Giang. You can also boo through YesD in Hanoi if not directly through a booking website.

Excellent Experience & Superb Hospitality!

My boyfriend and I booked a tour 2 nights and 3 days with YESD. After a long bus ride, we arrived in Hagiang where Mr Thien picked us up from the bus station. We arrived at 4 am, so we didn't notice the view. When we woke up in the morning at the homestay place, we looked outside and everything was gorgeous, with breathtaking views of the hills and heavenly clouds just touching the top of the mountains. Mr Thien and his wife prepared a delicious breakfast for us; they are a lovely family and super friendly. After breakfast we went on a tour to Dong Van, where you could see spectacular scenery, mountain tribes, villages and historic sites. We were also enjoying and experiencing the region's unique culture along the way. If you are someone who is looking to discover the natural and cultural wonders of the North of Vietnam, share experiences with the local community, and be face-to-face with these colorful cultures, this tour would be the one for you.
