Got rooms with windows. Hard bed. Friends room had really strong smoke smell. If walk in booking, ask to see (smell) the room before booking and see if the room has a window. The room we had was fine no smell. Reasonably well located in an area with plenty of food options. Staff very friendly, helpful and English was a little better than some other places.

Last minute search for a room

We stayed one night in the Monaco hotel to be on the main land for a flight to Ho Chi Minh. We travelled from Cat Ba Island. Very nice hotel and rooms/suits in the middle of town. Very clean and the staff were friendly. Only the reception staff spoke English.

A very relaxed town. Next door to the hotel I had the best message I've had in Vietnam. 
We went to a coffee shop "Coffee 42" on Minh khai, the own kept bringing us free sweets and fruit to taste and it was for free. 
The kids had a great time are the amusement park on things they would not be able to go on at home. 
It was a nice surprising town and relaxed. Very hot at mid day.

One day visit

It has a good location, the room was not bad, but far from good. In the price was breakfast included can't give any star for that is was just bad, with 2 non at all service minded women. If you have any other options, you can survive 1 night. It gives 1 star that the staff in reception spoke some English, but not really smiling, didn't found that they had much interest in you. 

Not Mich for the money. 

Nice and Clean hotel. The Beds are a bit hard. But the room have a decent size. Its quite affordable. There wasnt much to do around but it was night stay on my way to Cat Ba island. The staff have difficulty in understanding english but they are really helpful and try to do their best.

Decent Place to spend the night

We stayed here for one night because we wanted to catch the 7am hydrofoil to Cat Ba. Fir this the location is good, its only a 10min walk to the port and about the sane distance to the bars/restaurant in town.

The hotel itself was less ideal. Our room was tiny, luckily we weren't staying long so we didn't need to unpack, if we did it would be too small for 2 people. The bed was rock hard and pillows thin. As a result, we barely slept (at least there was no chance of missing the boat as we were up anyway!!). There was air con and a working tv, so we kept ourselves entertained through the night. The decor is dated (although I wouldn't expect more for the price) but it made it look grubby, even though it wasn't, and the door looked like someone had tried to break in, so it made you feel less than secure.

The bathroom was a pleasant surprise having seen the state of the room..it was clean and more modern.

We can't comment  on breakfast, as sadly it didn't start until 6:30, so we missed it.

On a side note, if you do end up in Haiphong for a night on the way to Cat Ba make the effort to head into town in the evening. It's nothing spectacular but the people are welcoming, there is some good food and it's nice to be in a less 'touristy' town. Plus it gets you out of the hotel...
