My first rock climbing experience and I loved it. Thanks to Thu and Michael my love affair with climbing has just begun. They have very different instructor styles but they work well together. And I am already planning a return trip to Cat Ba. 

Rock Climbing experience

My wife and I went here for a massage with two friends travelling with us. We were told they could accommodate all four of us together. The manager was very attentive and professional, after waiting 15 mins the treatment began. I now suspect she didn't have enough therapists for us and spent that time rounding up more therapists in the local area.

Atmosphere was poor, it was just a hotel room with two regular beds, we had to lay down on an itchy blanket for the massage.

I was seen to by an elderly man and my wife by a woman. Rushed would be an understatement to describe this, he started massaging me before I was fully laid down on the bed. Technique was rough and akin to a mugging more than a massage. Without exaggerating, it was genuinely painful and we have had countless massages in the past to compare it to. The twisting and cracking techniques he used were crazy and left my back sore and in pain. The therapists spoke almost no English so communicating discomfort was almost impossible.

My one hour session was over in 20 mins, naturally I went straight downstairs to complain. Meanwhile the guy took over my wife's massage without asking, leaving her clinging to a towel to shield her chest while this guy used his beating technique on her and pulled her hair.

Perhaps we were unlucky with our therapists because our friends said theirs was average but enjoyable. Still, I recommend you pay a couple USD more and go elsewhere. You deserve better.

Spa, worst massage ever, by a big margin.

We walked past and asked for the price to have our nails painted as we had had a bad mani/ pedi done a few days earlier and wanted polish that wasn’t sticky. We received a full manicure and pedicure (including heals) at half the price of where the previous mani/ pedi was done. We were very impressed with the outcome. So much so, that we decided to get a 30 minute hot stone massage. Again, the price was unbeatable and the massage was very good. Would highly recommend the spa service here. The staff here were wonderful

We did have fun during our full day kayaking/deep water solo, even tho our guide for the day was pretty unenthusiastic the all time. 
The all climbing thing felt a bit unsafe (quick and vague instructions, approximate approach), but we honestly didn't pay too much attention to it all and had good times.
We later found out tho that this business is apparently unlicensed and uninsured, making it a risky choice...unfortunately accidents can happen. Probably better opte for a safer option...choose carefully.

Use caution.

Didn't stay overnight, but would definitely recommend Viet, the travel agent here. He speaks perfect English, has a good sense of humour and as far as I can tell by booking a boattour and an overnight stay in one of the floating houses and my bus to Hanoi, he's well organized, friendly, trustable and able to think outside the box.

I am a solo female traveller and am devastated by the handling of theft from my room in Mr Zoom’s hostel, and specifically the shady dealings of the manager Mr. Zoom himself.

I had a private room in Mr. Zoom’s hostel and when I arrived the light in the room was not working, nor was the AirCon as paid for in advance. I had already asked 3 times could someone please fix the light. When it got too dark to see in the room, I went out for 2 hrs in the evening and as advised by the manager Mr.Zoom I left the door unlocked so that the problem could be rectified. When I returned, a maintenance man was only just fixing the light…meaning that the door had been left unlocked the entire time. This is extremely negligent considering the fact that I had been told in faith to leave it unlocked.
Upon closer inspection of my room, I found that my bag had been rummaged through and also that a large proportion of my hidden safe-keep money stolen. I immediately requested that the police were to be called but after a horrible 2 hour interrogation from the owner Mr.Zoom (who took me into a room by myself, separated me from my friends, and grilled me as to how much money I had originally and why etc.) he began to raise his temper and call me a liar, attempting to catch me out in my story, twisting my words and recording it on his phone. He also threatened that if I went to the police, it would result with me in custody for at least a few days before it was dealt with, and reiterated numerous times that the police on Cat Ba Island were very harsh towards accusations of this nature. Oddly, Mr. Zoom then began badgering me to go to the police in the latter stages of the inquiry, but insisted I would have to go alone.

While I was being interrogated by Mr Zoom, he mentioned additionally that "all you tourists are the same; you come to my hostel and say your money is stolen here when you have no proof of what you come here with". I presume from this statement that this is not the first, nor the last time travellers come away feeling scammed during their stay at this hostel. For the record, I knew 100% the amount of money left in my bag as I had counted the full amount before I left the room. Unfortunately, it was made abundantly clear that nothing would be done in respite of this theft, as he outright accused me of lying about the whole thing and therefore refused to refund me anything...not even my nights stay. 

The manner in which I was treated and the way Mr Zoom personally dealt with the situation was unbelievably unprofessional, and completely criminal. I would avoid all dealings with Mr Zoom’s Hostel and I’d also like to warn all travellers to be aware of such a scam.
