We arranged to stay here for two nights with an airport pick up weeks before we left home. We confirmed all details several times via email and all seemed great.  But there was no one to meet us at the airport so we had to get a taxi. On arrival we were told our room with balcony wasn't available. They offered us another room for one night then said they would move us to balcony room.  The room was dirty, blankets were dirty there were cockroaches....disgusting! We walked out and found a beautiful hotel around the corner. 

Forget it!

One of hundreds hotels around St. Joseph's Cathedral. Nothing really special, small but clean rooms, working air-con, hot-water and sattelite TV for not more than 20 $ for a double room. It was really difficult to find working socket in room (annoying).

Average place in a heart of Old Quarter of Hanoi

I flew into Hanoi very late, and the motorbike taxi from the shuttle point at Hoan Kiem couldn't seem to understand my directions. Or perhaps he was friendly with this hotel...but, as it was a reasonable rate ($15), I decided not to argue any further and just spend one night.

This was a mistake.  Within 10 minutes I realized the room I was given had a bed bug infestation.  Small ones, big ones, crawling by the pillows and the foot of the bed.  Others in the mattress creases.  I immediately told the desk clerk, but he didn't recognize the English word for bed bugs.  I drew a picture, and Google image'd it for him.  He pretended to be mighty confused.  Finally he says, "uhh....this is atmosphere."  OH.  REALLY.  He offered to change the sheets.  I refused and asked to check out (though most of the surrounding hotels had already shuttered for the night).  We finally came to a deal with an upgraded room for the same price, which I inspected thoroughly and found no such bug issues.

Though I insisted the original room NEEDED to be taken out of commission and sprayed (the only way to get rid of these things), I doubt they did so.  I truly feel bad for the next person who books it.  

Additionally, no breakfast was included.

Bed Bugs in First Room

We came across this hotel by chance in Hanoi. We had already viewed several hotels, but they were either over-priced, or under-clean! Golden Plaza was perfect. Very reasonable, extremely clean and with just what we needed: bathroom, tele, breakfast. It was also in a good location. However as our trip went on, the personal touches from the staff made our stay all the more enjoyable. My partner was ill on our third day in Hanoi and the staff at Golden Plaza were very helpful. Finally, just to prove that the hotel isn't only friendly when guests are staying, but also that their care extends to those who have left......when we arrived at the airport upon leaving, we realised we had left some paintings behind at the hotel by accident. Michael tried to find the cheapest way to ship them to us back in the UK and even though we sent him the money for the postage, he ended up having to pay slightly more but very kindly offered it as part of the service. Most places would not have done this in a million years. I would recommend this hotel to anybody visiting Hanoi.

You couldn't wish to find more helpful staff, value for money and cleanliness

We ended up staying here due to having to leave our previous hotel. We found this hotel after visiting their more expensive luxury sister hotel. When we explained that it was slightly out of our price range they organised for us to go and visit the Golden Plaza and show us a room. 

The room was very clean, light and airy with good facilities and a nice size balcony. Our only complaint would be that our room was on the top floor and the wifi signal was very poor in the room. However when we wanted to used the internet we were made more than welcome to sit in the lobby to work.

The staff are very friendly and helped us out several times with finding stuff.

Overall we would recommend this hotel and if we find our self back in Hanoi we would defiantly stay here again

Great Location, Reasonably Priced, Friendly Staff

My advice is that you should consider all reviews of this hotel and compare to others before committing to stay at this hotel. 

My review is based on my 4 nights stay in November 2008.

NEGATIVES-
* Told $10 a room for 2 people, but upon arrival, rate was increased to $15 for 2 people.
* After 4 days and repeated requests to fix it, toilet did not work. Wouldn't  flush at all. Had to manually pour water into bowl to clear it. Had asked twice each day for it to be repaired, but no action taken.
* Water problems. At least I had water but very low pressure on 3rd floor. Other guests above me complained of no water at all. We all complained repeatedly, but no action taken by hotel.
* Breakfast is basic and ordinary. Supply tea or coffee, bread roll, small punnet of bitter and jam and one banana. (every day). no other options offered.
* Dirty. Bathroom walls and ceiling covered in mold and mildew. Dust settled throughout entire hotel. Room not properly cleaned before I entered it. Hair in sink and on floor and also dust and bits of paper from previous guests.
* Bed linen should be scrapped. Sheets were old and thin and had small holes in addition to having stitch lines/seams down the middle where they salvaged and made one sheet from two old sheets. Pillows are thick and not comfortable sleep. Is like putting your head down on 2 & 1/2 pillows.
* Power sockets unsafe. All power sockets in my room need to be replaced. Had to jiggle plugs to make a connection resulting in sparks and intermittent electricity.
* TV reception poor. Most TV channels very grainy (snowstorm effect)
* Free Internet, but computers have no anti-virus software. Many guests complained that upon sending/checking emails, their in-box and that of the person receiving the email next day was loaded with spam emails containing viruses. They advertise WiFi, but it never worked.
* Air Conditioner good, but... remote control for it was a universal type, not compatible and intermittent. Tried to raise room temp, but instead, the control lowered the temp then stopped, leaving air cond running at full fan at 19 degrees. Too cold and would not turn off.
* Room cleaning.. almost non-existent. Returned from day out, room had not been serviced. Asked for it to be done, nothing happened. Asked again next morning.... nothing. Had to ask again in afternoon, then hours later it was done, buit no fresh towels. All they did was make bed, did not change sheets, did not sweep or anything.
* Staff children run rampant. Frequently during breakfast, their young child of about 2 years of age is left in the area screaming a tantrum and they do nothing about it except yell at it in Vietnamese or smack it to result in it screaming more.

POSITIVES-
* Most staff speak English, although only a couple of them fluently.
* Staff very friendly and sincere.
* Off street location, so is quieter than others.
* Tour booking service highly efficient and professional.

SUMMARY -
I have visited Vietnam frequently over past 3 years. This is not the worst hotel I stayed at, but not far from it. It is a fact of life due to the rain and humidity that mold and mildew develop, but this hotel apparently does nothing to address the problem. Water pressure is frequently a problem throughout all of Vietnam, even in 4 star hotels. This hotel just accepts it's a problem and have not upgraded their system to an acceptable standard. Low water pressure is always better than no water.
I felt that the attitude of the owners was "It's a cheap hotel, so we only need to provide a cheap service".

My summary in a few words - dirty hotel crying out for maintenance along with poor service and not value for money.

escrocs , escrocs , not honest... we had  a very bad experience in this hotel ... the boss fired us out of his hotel and he was very impolite with us , his words was very rude because we didn t book tours with his hotel.. tough experience

I wish I head read these reviews but my partner fell for the sales patter - we had the worst bus journey that was smuggling sand across the border  to Laos and we had to share our seats with the bags of sand, they charged us over double, lied about the capacity and there was of course no toliet, we were treated poorly and as a way of funding the trip for locals who paid nothing.  The bus stopped at a car park at 3am for 2hrs for no reason and the driver played his CD's so loud at  3am that no one could sleep - the bus was so heavy with sand that it grounded the road many times and blew a tyre.  Oh and the 18hr bus journey took 25hrs.

HOW CAN WE STOP THIS HOTEL?????

I wish I read previous reviews before handing my money over!

There was a kid waiting at the bus stop where most tourists are drooped off and he was so persistent in taking us to his hotel, we were planning to stay in the old quarters and since we were not sure how to get there, we decided to go with him and why not? take a look at the room in his hotel.   Because it was already so late we decided to take the room for one night and look for something else the next day.  The bathroom drain smelled terribly bad it was unberable.  The next morning we went to the desk and tried to check out, the lady (the only one that spoke english among all of the ones hanging around the lobby) seemed friendly and offered us to move us to another room and supposedly gave us a discount.  The room seemed ok so we end up staying there for about 4 days.  That same morning, we asked questions regarding tours & options to travel south to Saigon, the lady seemed helpful &sold us a tour to halong bay.  Don't ever buy tours or tickets from this hotel they will in fact rip you off big time, they have fake pictures of buses, boats and menus that look good but when you get to the real place is all a night mare, they will tell you the boat room is with AC but is not, they lie to sell and when you return to them and claim or express your disatisfaction, they are ignorant and careless.  .When we ask about the best option to travel south to Saigon the girl said the overnight sleeping train was the best and the cheapest.  She show us pictures of the train (nice pictures) and said it costs $42 dollars/person.  She was very perstistant, she is a good talker  or a good liar I should  say. She said she just looked at the free spaces 5 minutes ago and there are still some, but not for long.  We didn't think it was expensive and it looked good so we booked it.  The next day afternoon, when we returned from our Halong bay tour, she said to us that there was no more seats in the train and that she suggested then to take the overnight sleeping bus.  Again, she showed us pictures of a nice bus, with seats that can be put down as beds, very clean, nice and modern, she said those buses are new and they bring them from USA, she also said that the maximum capacity of passengers on a bus like that is 15 and of course they have bathroom facilities.  We asked how much that would cost and she said that we needed to talk to Micheal for that, Micheal is a Vietnamese boy, and the one who is in charge of the hotel, perhaps the owner.  The lady who promotes false information and appears to be helpfull is we believe his wife.  The overnight bus they were trying to sell us goes from town to town with multiple stops, from Hanoi to center Vietnam is an overnight sleeping bus and from there is a day trip from town to town, of course the bus is with AC (apparently).  When we talked to Micheal he said the bus was more expensive than the train; $60 per person, but since we stayed in his hotel 4 nights and bought a tour from them he discounted it and gave it to us for $55.  We booked the bus.  When we got on the bus the night we left we could not believe it, there was probably 40+ tiny beds, similar to what the ambulances use to carry injured people but against the wall and on two levels, it was crowded and hot, not AC, we were placed on top at the very back of the bus on a long platform with a tiny mattress where 6 people sleep one beside another, people you don't know, you can hardly move and that is not all, once all the supposed beds are filled 40+ then all the local vietnamese people start getting on and lay down on the aisle of the bus.  Your head is 3 inches from touching the ceiling and when the bus jumps and rocks on the bumpy road driving at 120+ km/hr you bang your head on the ceiling over and over, and you wonder is this really asleeping bus? it is so freighting and unsafe.  Literally you could not move, or turn around or step down from your bed and go to the bathroom, the lady next to me had to go to the bathroom but she kept trying to get off her bed sitting at the edge of my feet with the legs hanging down for  about 20 minutes trying to figure out how to get down as there is no railings to hold on to or steps/ladder to get down, but there is no other way that to jump and step into the head or feet of the one sleeping on the hallway floor as it's dark and you can see nothing.  We truly felt like a bunch of chicken in a cage being transported.    A total hell, a total scam and a total disapointment.  
When we got off in the next destination, we went to complaint to the main office of the "Open bus ticket company"  we explained what happened, talking to them we found out that not only they had lied about the product but they had also over charged us by $25 dollars each ticket.  The Agency of the bus said the hotels do in fact make 2 or 3 dollars commision for each ticket they sell, but Micheal obviously is a very  unhonnest person who will scam every single guest that walks into his hotel.  I have met by chance a girl that I had seen in the hotel in Hanoi and she had experienced a similar situation with this hotel and with Micheal.  The main bus office couldn't helpand washed their hands saying I need to deal with Micheal.  I did call Micheal just to tell him about it and he pretended he didn't remember anything or knew anything about it.  
People like Micheal who take adventage of tourists should not be in bussiness.  I hope you read this message so you don't become their next victim. 
Among the 8 countries that I toured during my trip, this was the only place where I experienced such a scam.  Thailand is similar but not to this extreme.  Otherwise, my trip in the rest of Vietnam was excellent and I loved this country.
In short, Micheal's favorite passtime: TO SCAM PEOPLE. Micheal's least favorite word: INTEGRITY

This is a scam!
The rooms are ok, but they are only nice to you if you book tours with them!

They sell you an 'open bus' ticket down to ho chi min city with An phu travel!!([--] company anyway) for double the price! the guy will say it is luxury, vip SLEEPER with food, drink, toilet etc...

He will then give An Phu the money for ONE sleeper and the rest will be regular seats, which there is nothing you can do about! the tickets are non refundable! AN PHU ARE RUDE, AGGRESSIVE, ONE TOILET STOP IN 12 HOURS WITH NO ACTUAL LOO, there is no food, toilet etc! which central star are fully aware of! RIP OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
