On our arrival to the hotel we realized that one of our bags had been left behind in the taxi which had already disappeared into the Hanoi traffic. The female staff member told us not to worry as the porter took off on a motorbike in pursuit of the taxi. We thought the bag was lost but 5 minutes later he returned with the piece of luggage. What a guy!! The staff were really hospitable and helpful and we could not fault the service. We used the hotel as a base over 2 weeks for several trips and each time we returned they had a nice room for us and greeted us warmly. The rooms were well appointed and roomy. On our last stay they upgraded us to a VIP room at no extra charge.  We would recommend this hotel to anyone intending to visit Hanoi.

Good hotel & great staff

step back in time and experience old style Hanoi with modern pleasures, though our side of hotel did not have elevator (minor) great location for walking around city. If you provide details of arrival at airport, hotle will arrange for shuttle pick-up at best rate, daily breakfast was very filling and welcome start of the day.

greatness of Hanoi

We chose this hotel because of its good rating on Tripadvisor, where it appeared as the second most popular choice in Hanoi. 

We ended up being very glad we chose this hotel. First, it’s reasonably priced, and well located in Hanoi’s old quarter, and the deluxe room we stayed in was large and clean. The manager speaks good English and efficiently booked a trip for us to Halong Bay. Second, we lost a bag with passport and other valuables while at Halong. The hotel manager and staff did EVERYTHING to help us, calling Vietnam airlines and changing our onward flight, taking us to the police station, communicating with immigration and the embassy … We are extremely grateful to them and touched by what they did for us.

There are a couple of minor problems. The staff (except for the two brothers who manage it) are not professionally trained, which means that the hotel suffers a bit from the ‘hanging out’ syndrome that characterises a lot of places in SE Asia – employees who hang around in the public areas watching TV. You feel a bit like you are walking through their living room when you come in and out. This may bother some people more than others – we found that if you accept it as pretty standard local practice it didn’t bother us, as staff were extremely helpful when we did need something. Also, the breakfast could be improved  – there is a small buffet with muesli and pretzels (?), toast and fresh fruit (sometimes) and you have to ask specifically for coffee. Eggs are available, but we were asked once in 8 days if we wanted some. 

These are very small 'buts' though, on the whole we liked it and would recommend it. It's certainly the place to be if you experience any problems like we did, with exceptionally helpful and kind staff :)

The hotel at 9a Hang Mam hotel pretends to be Sunrise Hotel. 
Please make sure you book the correct hotel.
Do not book with a man named Phillip as he is the manager at 'Panda Hotel' and that hotel is nowhere near as nice as Sunrise and will scam you!

typical boutique hotel well positioned in old quarter of hanoi. just step out the door and you are on the old tree lined avenues lined with bars , cafe's and shops. very friendly staff make you feel a part of the family, with the girls seeing off taxi trying to rip me off!.... ta!

The room is relatively good size but location of the hotel is rather inconvenient. It is along the local vegetable and meat stalls which has nothing to see at night except for a few fruits or provision stalls that has only cup noodles or crackers. Anywhere you need to go for food or shopping, must take taxi or call for the grab which cost about 50K VND.
The hotel does include buffet breakfast but the food is not good too. Hence, we did not take the breakfast on our subsequent morning after the first morning at the hotel.
