The BananaZ Hostel is nicely located  in Lappa, nice bars are around. We booked a private room in the hostel. The room is small and dark. The bed squeezes with every movement and the mattress was so dirty! I never saw a dirty mattress like it was on this bed!! It was disgusting! Also the pillowcases were too small for the pecky pillow, so somehow you slept right on it. The next morning we were looking forward to the included breakfast. However, we had to realize that there was only half a roll left. Upon request, if there was still bread we received a simple "NO!" as an answer. Our friend, who had breakfast earlier, reported that she had bread, but nothing to put on.
When we wanted to check-out the guy said that we should pay for our food and drinks from the previous evening, which we had already paid in the evening. After some discussion, he finally let us go and said: "I'll let you go first, but if that's not true I'll find you".
All in one - not a nice stay. There are many better Hostels in Rio!

I never saw a dirty mattress like this! The "included breakfast" is actually cup of bad coffee!

The hostel brags about their free shared dinners and cozy atmosphere. I agree, the atmosphere is VERY laid back, the staff is SUPER friendly and the meal is included. However, the dorms are filthy, there’s no space for your luggage nor a safe for your valuables, there are way too few bathrooms and no quiet hours whatsoever so you might have to listen to South America’s worst backpacker musicians having their jam sessions outside your dorm (windows open obvs bc the air condition is a joke) until small hours. And the food wasn’t really worth the money it saved.

A place for you if you’re 17 and don’t need to sleep

Highly recommended hostel in Rio! Really enjoyed my stay in December last year. People and staff are really friendly and helpful, there is always lots of entertainment, food, music, and good energies :) Would definitley visit again! Thanks for everything!

I stayed at Bananaz a little while back. It was one of the most amazing hostels I have ever stayed at, it's located in the beating heart of Lapa. There is a real sense of family there and those working there do their utmost to not only make you feel at home but to make sure you have a great time. We got taken on all kind of great nights out from street fiestas to local cachaca bars to  night clubs. They cook you the most beautiful meals and you all eat together which is great for those wishing to socialise. The guys who worked there had there own football team so me and my mates would play them some evenings which was so much fun. I also had my 22nd birthday at Bananaz and they showed me the best time. Truly miss this place. Look no further if you wish to experience Rio in all it's glory.

Great times, a home away from home. The heart of the true Rio experience.

Bananaz Hostel 

23rd November 5nights & 15-16th December. 

This hostel was the first hostel at the beginning of a months traveling around Brazil. 

We (myself and female work friend) had been traveling from the UK to Rome then 24h in Rome then the long flight to Rio. After this time we where tired and needed a good shower. 

We arrived at the hostel at around 10am a lot earlier than checkin time. 
We were greeted by Alex, a brilliant guy full of information about where to travel what places to see. 
He checked us in and offered us to have breakfast. We were pleasantly surprised that we where offered breakfast. 

He said our beds would be ready as soon as the other people checked out. He showed us the showers so we could get freshened up and feel more comfortable. 

Breakfast consists of: 
Scrambled/ fried egg 
Sliced rolls 
A selection of cut up fruit 
A selection of biscuits 
Tea, coffee and juice 

We booked the biggest room that was 16 beds (the cheapest). The bunks were very tall, You’ll need to be an athlete to get to the top bunk. 
Mattress are small and are in need of changing due to the condition and the smell. 

Myself and my friend would be laughing at each other if the fitted bedsheet would come off as we didn’t want to touch the mattress. 

Dinner 🎉 the amazing bonus of this hostel. At 8pm every night all guests and staff gather in the bar/reception/ lounge area for dinner. If your vegetarian no problem they will sort this out on check in.   

You’ll never go hungry, the portions are very big and the food is amazing. Most nights consist of rice or pasta with beans salad and different meat dish each night. 

This hostel is brilliant for location, very close to the main area of Lapa. Close to a laundrette too.
I would only recommend staying at this hostel for Friday -Monday. Other than these dates the hostel becomes very empty and like we felt that we where the only guest with loads of staff. Could stay here Friday -Sunday then try Ilha Grande? The hostel can arrange transport. 

This hostel comes with some great  characters, the manager who is very chilled and on a occasion came on a night out with us and didn’t return till 6am. The managers daughter who helps with dinner everyday. One guy stood out as jack the lad Londoner. Alfie was working at the hostel while traveling, friendly guy and always keen to show you a good time in lapa. Other friendly people who lived/helped out always there to offer help if required.

At the end of our months travels we returned to this hostel for Friday and Saturday. 

We were pleasantly  surprised that within a month this place looked cleaner  and was packed with guests due to the Friday and Saturday.  Mattress are still the same but offers a full round travellers experience.
