The property looked great and indeed has a central location in beautiful Strasbourg. It is a shared flat, not a hotel, which we were aware of and liked the idea.

The experience itself was quite the opposite. We had to wait for almost two hours to get keys to the apartment. Entering the flat requires three keys: one for the garage, one for the main door and one for your own room. When we finally received the keys, we did not get a key for the main door at all. It was supposed to be kept unlocked during the night.
Well, it wasn't. When we came back after dinner, the door was locked. Luckily, when another guest arrived later, we finally got in after waiting in the staircase wondering whether we should go sleep in our car or find another place (our luggage inside, of course).

We had OK sleep, the bed though was not actually a bed but a sofa-bed.
After the locking-out-episode you would think nothing more awful could happen. So did we. And well it did. The next morning we were leaving between 10 and 11 as the last guests. The main door was locked again, which meant we weren't able to get out from the apartment. We had to wait for the property owner sending us somebody with the keys to let us out.

This is absolutely too expensive for this kind of experience. This seems to be somebody's business idea with no business understanding; bad customer service, absolutely no interest in customer experience. With the same price you get a central hotel room in Strasbourg. 

We also did a reclamation and the property owner did not agree on giving us any refund even though they were aware of this (we called them in the evening, in the night and in the morning). Luckily, Booking.com did, since this was quite clear we did not make this kind of story up. According to the customer service agent at Booking.com, there also seemed to be a problem for us being two guys together.

Do not book this!

In order to get to get into the loft and then your room, you need to arrange a time for the owner to meet you to let you in - through the garage. When I asked about this, I was told the place was 'hush hush' as they had 'special people' who liked to stay. Therefore, there is no buzzer at the front door. I will leave readers to speculate on why such a situation exists, and whether such an explanation is credible. Suffice to say that my suspicions were raised.

When we arrived in the loft itself, we were told there were famous French comedians staying, and they were rehearsing in the main living room. For that reason we were asked to keep noise to a minimum. I could only conclude that the comedians, given the run of the place, were more important than we were. Also, would we like breakfast - for an extra charge? My previous misgivings were elevated a notch.

Guests are required to pay cash upfront. In fact, I'd be asked to wire a deposit a week or so before they stay, but had asked that the requirement be waived. Our room wasn't ready (at 2.30pm) but I was exhausted and paid €300 for 2 nights, in cash. No receipt was issued.

When we got to it, we saw the room was very small - even by French standards, and  we could properly open our suitcase. But the clincher was that we were to sleep on a sofa bed! It was also very hot. There is no private bathroom - you share with other guests if necessary. I certainly don't recall this being apparent  during the booking process- and this seems to have surprised other guests also, judging from the reviews.  It was not a room that should cost even €100 per night, let alone €150. We looked at another room, and it was also a sofa bed. I'd had enough and asked for our money to be returned. The owner arrived promptly and returned €200 of the €300 we paid. The owner was surprised because she said we had been upgraded, but I was left a bit speechless because I can't imagine how small or uncomfortable a basic room must be. 

This was an awful experience. I wouldn't recommend this place to anybody (at least at these prices), and if you do book, do not send a downpayment, and make sure you check out the room before you hand over any cash. 

The owner will doubtless respond to this review, disputing what I've said, but I have been reviewing on TripAdvisor for some time, so I'm happy for my credibility to be judged against hers.


Don't do it!

For breakfast there was no one to help us with, except the first day. No one from the front desk/bar was basically in sight during the day and we got a complimentary bottle of mediocre champagne as a deal for cancelling our reservation through the on-line agency.
As for the "dedicated facility" that our bathroom was supposed to be the outside guests that joined the charity event held at The Loft 13 felt absolutely free to use it as the mess in it after the event confirmed. I even asked one of them not to use our bathroom and as a reply I got a "No one told us not to do so" while stepping in it. Being not interested in the charity event to us it was a complete nuisance and no one informed us about it in advance. We were just told about that on the very same day and asked if we wanted to join, We suggest the managers of the hotel that if they plan to use their facility as a multiple-use one they should inform their guests properly and take a better look on what happens in the hotel guests' area during the events they organize.

CHARMING STRUCTURE BUT POOR MANAGEMENT

Loft 13 is on the top floor of a building situated right in the centre of the old town. Our bedroom had a wonderful view of the cathedral nestling among the rooftops of the surrounding medieval buildings. Our bed was very comfortable and we appreciated the use of our own fridge and television. The bathroom which we shared with one other room was beautifully appointed. The main sitting room was a large loft area filled with lovely paintings and furniture. An adjacent dining area was where we had breakfast with orange juice, tea, coffee, various meats and cheeses, butter, jam, honey and a huge selection of rolls, pastries and croissants. To one side is the kitchen area from which our coffee was replenished for the asking.

Our hostess was charming and we were able to ask her advice and obtain from her a map of the town. I would certainly recommend this as a wonderful place to stay.

Lovely stay at Le Loft

Apart from the excellent location and the charming ambience this B&B lacks a good management. We were told the bathroom was shared but we discovered we had to share it with all the guests of a charity event hosted by the owner of Le Loft. The coziness of the place was spoiled by the 60 something people invited to the event. The breakfast offered a good selection of brioches and croissants but no one was there to warm the milk or prepare an espresso or a cappuccino. We were left with a thermos of coffee and a cold pitcher of milk. Even though the place was empty we were charged for the one night we missed for having lost the connection of our flight to Strasbourg from HCMC. The cleaning at Le Loft is not something is well taken care of. Overall it is a pity that a place with so much potential is so poorly managed.
