We stayed here for a couple of days in August. The town was getting geared up for its annual fair which meant that some streets were blocked, but we got through. We could do all of our sightseeing on foot.

The room was nice, comfortable and quiet. The breakfast was verging on the spectacular. The staff were very friendly. There is a pleasant courtyard which is good for smokers.

The only snags were - no lift - and the hotel is physically closed in the afternoon makig it impossible to drop off baggage before check-in

Excellent location, excellent breakfast

The hotel is located in the heart of the old town, in close proximity to the cathedral. The furniture may have been a bit old, but it still has charm. The nice breakfast is absolutely sufficient and offers everything you need. The staff is helpful and very friendly. From the hotel you can get everything on foot and you don't depend on the offices. The only thing that disturbs a can is the party noise at night when you have the room out on the street. But also that is written in the hotel description in advance and that makes the hotel even more authentic. We would take it back anytime.

Super price/performance ratio

We booked a package tour through the Bamberg Tourist Information office and chose this hotel more or less at random. It was a good choice. Somewhat on the cheap side, but if offered everything you need: clean, friendly staff, bountiful breakfast and right in the centre of the old city. We arrived by train and it was just 15 minutes walk to the hotel.
We had a room on the top floor, which was fine for us. But if you don't handle stairs too well, make sure you ask for a room on the bottom floor, since there is no lift. The streets are narrow and full of jovial drinkers till late in the night, so it would disturb some as being a bit on the loud side if you like to sleep with the window open.
We'd certainly stay here again. Bamberg was delightful for a short get-away. Make sure you drink a Rauchbier (smoked beer).

In the middle of a mediaeval gem

Bit of a budget hotel, but goodness me you get a lot for your money!  We arrived very late - emailed from the train to say we were running very late, and they arranged to leave our key in the safe outside the front door. And fair enough it was there.  I was with friends rather than Mrs B, and our room was very clean with three very modern and comfortable beds.  The decor was a bit old and could maybe have done with a bit of a rethink, but that was fine.  In terms of location it was incredible - right in the centre of town.  Of course Bamberg is a party city (in a good way - not like it would be in the UK) so there was street-based conversation and laughing till a late hour outside our window, but a) we had the window open, and b) I could sleep through a jazz drummer setting up.  Downsides?  No safe, no hair-dryer and no air-con, it could do with a lick of paint, but we just slept there so we didn't care.  The staff there were also lovely and fantastic - when trying to print our boarding passes, the help the nice lady at the desk gave us was invaluable.  Also the breakfast looked good and wasn't expensive, but I hit the ground running with a coffee, so didn't sample.  In summary?  Clean, basic, friendly and very central.

In the heart of Bamberg, nice and not expensive

The location is perfect. Everything is very easy to reach. The staff is very friendly. Breakfast is extensive and very tasty. The rooms are relatively small but sufficient. The facilities have come in years. I would still book it again because of the central location.

It's great.

Our room was on the third floor and there was no elevator, that was the only bad part of the accommodation. Other than that, the hotel was close to everything, so it was worth staying there.

Optimal location

I stayed at the Sandstern Hotel for only one night, as we wanted to visit the historic centre of Bamberg, one of the stages of our tour. The hotel is in a very good location, in the centre and within walking distance of the main attractions. This can also be a disadvantage, however, because you have to park quite far away (there are no conventional parking spaces). The hotel reception has a bit of a strange schedule, and in particular it is closed at lunch break, until we were at 3:00. It is therefore worth indicating the arrival time precisely, because when the reception is closed the rooms are placed in an outdoor box, from which the opening code is provided. The room in which we used the bar, a three-door hatch, was of the same size and was discreetly confused.

Central position, but nothing more

We stayed in Sandstern for three nights in July. The temperature outside was over +30, so aircon would have been nice, but we knew ahead that there was no such luxury offered. We were lucky to get on room NOT facing the street, and therefor we could keep the windows open during the night. This would probably not have been possible in a room facing the street, because there is several bars right next to the hotel and Obere Sandstrasse seems to be quite popular in the evenings.

We also knew ahead - thanks to a reviewer here on TripAdvisor - that we have to carry our bags to our room, since there is no elevator in the hotel.  Luckily our room was on the first floor. :) 

The location is perfect for exploring the old town of Bamberg. The hotel is nice and clean and the staff was very friendly. What we especially liked (due to the heat) was the refrigerator downstairs, where you could get a bottle of cold water or soft drink 24/7. The purchase (2 euros/bottle) was paid by putting money in a mailbox next to the refrigerator. <3

We didn't have breakfast at the hotel. Though it was priced very reasonable we choose to have late breakfasts in a café almost opposite the hotel.

Sandstern is not fancy, it is just an ordinary nice hotel for holidaytravellers who don't want to pay a huge amount of money for a place to sleep. It was perfect for us, and we felt we got good value for the money!

The reception is open ONLY from some morning hour until 12 o'clock noon and then again from 3 pm to 7(?) pm. So if you know that you will arrive or leave at some hour outside the opening hours it's worth while to get in touch with the hotel before your trip.

Good value for money

(+) Of course the location is the Centre. Before the town hall and before the Schlenkerla Beer Hall to hand in. It was raining and we were offered an umbrella with us.)) At our personal request in the correspondence we were booked a room on the 1st floor, without having to climb the stairs. Thank you very much. We were planning to arrive after 19:00 (reception closes), we were kindly arranged to hand over the key.

Hotel in the heart of the historic part of Bamberg

If you travel... and read the other reviews you know what you get: location in the old town, not 150 meters to the brewery's outlet of the Schlenkla, scene locations in the immediate vicinity, students.... even in the week.... oh there were times :-) small bathroom clean beds good breakfast no parking at the door but free WiFi for that.
