This was one of the worst places I ever staid. Staff is unfriendly. When I arrived, I got to choose one of two rooms - so I opened for one that actually had a window. The bathroom was tiny and hardly any water coming out in the sink The water quality is bad and I got serious food poisoning from brushing my teeth with water from the sink (this didn’t even blown to me in India, and definitely nowhere else in Uzbekistan). When I booked my own taxi to the airport, the owner was angry at me because I didn’t book their more expensive transfer, and he even threatened the taxi driver. Location was ok just in front of the entrance to the old town, but you’d be much better off staying in a better value guesthouse writhin the old town. Everywhere else in Uzbekistan I experienced such warm hospitality, here I was shouted at and not even offered tea. What a letdown.

Huge disappointment

The BIGGEST breakfast. Per Person: 
4 pastries, a pancake, 2 slices of traditional round bread, butter & jam, tea/coffee, 4 slices of cantaloupe. After you finish that, they unbelievably bring you a plate of eggs, sausage and a slice of tomato and cucumber. 2 meals in 1. You won't feel hungry until dinner time (of the next day).
 
(1) Mattresses need to be replaced. They are all concave, sunken by a body's impression. Wake up w/a sore back. (2) 1 toilet & 1 shower are downstairs. It's a drag to go downstairs and stand in line.

We booked the stay into this guesthouse without to know it. We went in at night and we've been welcomed by the staff, Who explained us the main house use. Its location is just in front of the main wall Shiva's gate. They even gave us some tips about how to get a collective taxi (that was cheaper then one proposed to us from the touristic office located into Shiva's wall.
A really worth stay! 

Worth choice 

Great breakfasts and great location, coupled with a not-hard bed and fair price make Alibek a good choice overall. That said, they have their little issues...

Rooms are rather small, and sink in the bathroom a bit cramped. Not much daylight in the downstairs room, but they do have a frosted window without curtains (and too high to reach) that leads outside, and a frosted window on the door to the room, which leads into the main entryway of the house. So you have light when you don't want it, and no light when you do. I used an automotive reflector screen for the door at night, which I'd brought along just for that eventuality. 

Believe it or not, a reflector screen is useful throughout the country. The time zone is set so that it gets light before 5AM in the spring and summer, and hotel windows rarely have good curtains. 

Mattress wasn't exactly "soft" but still OK even for someone who likes soft beds. Another essential piece of equipment for UZ that one may not think of, is an air mattress. But I did NOT need to use it here. Pillows were nice -big, heavy, proper feathered pillows. You're here primarily for the sleeps, so this stuff matters. 

The second reason I chose Alibek was the breakfast, served on the lovely balcony overlooking the entrance to the walled city just meters away. And it did not disappoint. Breakfast was served, not buffet style. Which means you get a few things you don't want, but also only one serving of something you might want to repeat. Overall though I can't complain -very filling and very good variety. 

Only the transport situation marred an otherwise decent stay. I used them to hire a car to take me to the airport. They quoted me 80,000 Som and, oddly, wanted the money up front. I agreed, only because the Brandt guide says that's about what it should cost. Well the Brandt guide is wrong. I'm leaving the fortress to head back to the guesthouse, and in the plaza between the fortress and the guesthouse, the taxi drivers all pounced. To make a long story short, they offered 30,000 even without much bargaining. So I stepped over to the guesthouse -this all transpired within meters -and told the family who owns the place, sitting on their front porch, "so that guy over there is offering me 30,000 for the trip that you charged me 80,000 for. "

All this is in Russian. In the meantime, another western tourist is asking them something in English as she's being ushered, ever more hastily, into another car. Once they got rid of her, they had it out with the taxi driver. 

The thing about the Russian language... it has such a floridly expressive repertoire of cursing, that it even has its own name. The proper usage of Russian "mat" has been elevated to an art form. 

Now the taxi driver and the guesthouse's owners chose to have their pleasant conversation mainly in Uzbek, which I don't speak, but there was a fair amount of Russian "mat" sprinkled in there too.  

In the end they gave me back my 80,000 and tried to make a few face-saving comments, but there's just no way to save face after something like that. I mean, we're talking about a difference equivalent to 6 USD, but still it's not cool. 

To make it even worse, I saw the girl at the airport, getting on the exact same flight as I was. So they did two egregious things. Not only did they grossly overcharge, likely pocketing at least 50,000 Som per car (because even 30K was probably a little high). But they could easily have put us together in the same car. She was pretty, too, so you know I wouldn't mind! ;) Instead, they knew we were going to the same place at the same time, and they still decided to shamelessly order two separate cars and grossly overcharge people TWICE!

Yeah, they'll hate me for telling the whole world about what they do, but you know what? They shouldn't be doing it in the first place!

Just don't use them to organize transport, and you'll be fine.

The location of this place was pefect, right outside the entrance to the city. The hosts were also great and looked after us, making sure we got breakfast, money and petrol. The owner’s son even went out for a drive with my husband to get the petrol! 

The room wasn’t anything special, and the bathroom was in a bit of a weird portacabin, but when you are paying such a good price for a private room with private bathroom and you’re in a great location you can’t really complain. Would happily stay here again.
