We were disappointed with this Lonely Planet recommendation (for the cafe). We were expected some home-like charm, but it was just an ordinary place with some cold cold curry. It was the worst curry experience during our 3 weeks trip: most expensive (even extra portion of rice was like 200 rupees), smallest portions and the whole experience feels not very good. We were trying to find some charm and sense in visiting the place, but we couldn’t. 

Overrated, overpriced, small portions

We took the cooking class with Mama. 
The class is way more expensive than a cooking class in Ella, but she is experienced and she even has her recipe book. 

The class started with a visit and grocery shopping at the local market. We were happy to get that experience first-hand, so we could check what to buy. However, the market visit contained an unpleasant surprise: Mama recommended us to get some spices at a stall - which turned out to be a tourist scam. They charged us a lot for some spices. If you take the classes don’t buy the spices at the market! Check other comments on trip advisor about the spice market in Galle. 

Apart from that bad experience, we went back to the kitchen to prepare a set of 7 dishes. The class itself was fast, but easy to follow. We got a lot of good tips and hopefully we’ll remember enough to try them at home (we also got her book, to increase our chances of remembering the recipes). 

At the end of the class, we had lunch with what we prepared: it was delicious!


Good but overpriced. Scam at the Spice Market 

A busy but entertaining morning learning to cook 10 different Sri Lankan dishes .Flying visit to the fish & vegetable markets and then back to the kitchen to prepare and cook 10 dishes in 90minutes (a poor man’s version of Master Chef) . Mama was instructive but a tyrant in the kitchen . Made it very easy for us.The kitchen is small so only room for 2people. Plenty of vegetarian options . When you finish you sit down and have lunch . Exhausting but fun .

Cooking in the kitchen 

I didn’t stay at the guesthouse only did the cooking course, but it was really great !! Strongly recommend it. Mama and her daughter answer all the questions and even give a cookbook and Masala mix you can use

Cooking course was fabulous

This is a rooftop cafe and restaurant so I’m not even sure why Tripadvisor has it listed as a hotel! The local curry and rice dishes are very tasty and excellent value-for-money in a relatively expensive area.

Typical local curries that are very good value

We came here following the recommendation of two different guide books. We were hugely disappointed and felt like all the lonely planet-fame made them all about the money and less about the food. The curries were cold, portions small and the taste was rather in the bottom range of all the curries we have tried during a 3-week trip all over the country. 
Mama just came out real quick to sell us her cookery class and her cooking book. But as soon as she noticed we would not buy any, we were of no interest and she disappeared as quickly as she turned up.

Rather check out any of the other amazing TripAdvisor-places with the same offer for 200 Rupies less.
