Stayed here as a couple and found it very comfortable and spacious. The spa was great and was big enough to stretch out in. The breakfast provisions were very good as well. The location was easy to find coming from Adelaide but a fair walk to the town centre if you wanted a coffee. Finally Cate was very helpful and friendly. 

Penola must stay 

Was lucky enough to be able to take my dog with me, the only hotel that have two dedicated rooms for pets in penola. The rooms are modern , clean , neat , with all the amenities you need. I was very impressed, would definitely recommend  it.  I would stay here again.

Clean modern and comfortable

Cathy was fantastic to deal with and had the room ready for me even  for a late arrival. The bathroom is very spacious and inviting and the room had two large TVs so we could relax and unwind in bed. Great proximity to restaurants and pubs . Room were clean and tidy

Great place to stay with great dinning options close by.

We love this place. It's clean & so very comfortable. Perfectly situated in close proximity to all the gorgeous Winery Cellar Doors the region has to offer. The Royal Oak Hotel and Pipers of Penola are also within walking distance. We are quickly becoming regulars and are looking forward to our next visit 😊 

A Must @ Coonawarra is a definite MUST

This place was a delightful find. A bit out of the way from the heart of Penola, but it's a small town and easy to navigate. The place was beautifully presented and the rooms were very spacious, modern, clean and comfortable. Unfortunately we could only stay one night, but I'm already aching to get back and use their attractive outdoor entertainment area, which looked perfect for whiling away the time with a bottle of great Coonawarra red over a BBQ. The name says it all really.

The Name Says It All

Staff was friendly and have a high attention to detail for a comfortable stay. I checked in for one night in the middle of winter, and they had the aircon already pre-warming up the suite in anticipation of my arrival. Rooms all very clean and tidy, with a pleasant home-away-from-home feel. No issues with hot water, and quality brands of consumables (eg, teabags, snacks, tissues, handsoap, etc) provided.

Excellent Stay

Starting with the positive, the room was great. It was a good size with room for a lounge and table as well as the bed, space for luggage, hanging space, good sized TV, comfortable bed with electric blanket. A table and chairs outside which was nice to sit at in the sun in the middle of the day. A large bathroom, including a heater in the ceiling. The room had great lighting - so often a shortcoming in hotel rooms. All up a very nice, comfortable space to stay. 

The negative was that the service didn’t match. Nothing huge - just lots of areas falling short.

•	We received two welcoming emails about a week before arriving - with different information in the 2 copies such as when restaurants would be open. A bit of searching showed that the contents of one email was well out of date. I also received 2 “thanks for staying with us” emails after we left - again slightly different. Perhaps a software issue?

•	The arrival message provides for contactless check in, which is fine, but also says you can come to reception if there is something else you need. The information in the room refers to reception being open all day. However in fact the reception is unstaffed. If you do need something you need to call and hope they are not too far away. I don’t have a problem with this - at least one other place we stayed on our trip did the same thing - but they were upfront about it.

•	The room includes a daily service and the usual message in the bathroom to hang your towels to keep them and leave them on the floor to get them changed. We were happy to keep the towels but had one very wet hand cloth which was left on the floor. Well the room was serviced, and they managed to turn up the corners of the toilet paper so they had been in the bathroom, but the hand towel was left on the floor.

•	We ordered the breakfast pack for the 2 days. The one for the first day was in the room on arrival - cereal, toast, orange juice and a piece of fruit each. We left the fruit to eat later in the day. When servicing the room they refreshed the items we had eaten but no new fruit for day 2. Cheeky when we had paid for 2 days.

•	The room included a few teabags - but these were not refreshed when the room was serviced so we ran out.

•	The room included a coffee plunger but neither the breakfast pack, nor the items available to buy in the room, included fresh coffee - just sachets of instant coffee. I don’t think you should call yourself luxury accommodation in 2023 without real coffee - but hey maybe that’s just me!

•	We did call to get access to the DVD library in reception - and someone drove up in about 5 minutes which was fine - but then we discovered the sound on the DVD player in the room wouldn’t work. We left a note in the room about this - but it wasn’t even acknowledged when the room was serviced.

None of this is all that serious, and much of this we would not have noticed if we stayed a single night, so given the many positive reviews, maybe Must was just having a bad couple of days. However the service we experienced did not match the quality of the accommodation, the description on the website, or I think the standards the owners are seeking to achieve. Prior to publishing this review I did write to the owner to raise these items. The response was “Many thanks for letting us know about the servicing issues you experienced, and please be comforted in the knowledge that we will address them.” Apparently the issues did not warrant an apology.

So all in all a comfortable place to stay but, given the price charged and the luxury claim they need to address the service issues.


Accommodation 5 stars, service 2 stars.

A fantastic find in Penola. Easy check in. The room was spacious, exceptionally clean and well appointed. The most comfortable hotel bed I’ve slept in during my travels.
We only stayed overnight but will definitely return to Penola to explore this beautiful area and stay at A MUSt@Coonawarra. 


Exceptional Accommodation

We stayed with our dog and had a fabulous apartment.We enjoyed a drink at the outside bar, then dinner in the beer garden at theRoyal Oak Hotel .A Must is surrounded by beautiful wineries!  The apartment was clean, comfortable and Cate was very helpful.We enjoyed our continental breakfast! Would love to stay again!

Fabulous pet friendly apartment in a beautiful surrounding!

Must is a fabulous place to stay. Beautifully appointed rooms with huge bath and shower, comfy beds and it is spotlessly clean. A short stroll into the quaint town of Penola which has great coffee and an eclectic group of interesting shops. We cannot recommend Must highly enough.
