The first thing you need to know about this Pousada is that it lies within the Favela. We stayed here for 5 nights in an apartment just outside the Favela, so we didn´t have to go inside at night, which I don´t recommend doing. However we didn´t feel unsafe at any time, but you will meet some sketchy people on your way to and from the Pousada. The apartment was nice, big, clean and cheap. We had room service and got clean sheets once every third day. The location is between Ipanema and Copacopana with great options for metro and bus stops. Besides that, the neighbor was a nightclub and very noisy, the wifi was slow and there were no hot water.   
Direction: Once you get to the entrance of the Favela de Cantagalo, walk up the stairs to the Favela. Follow the stairs up around the corner to the left and again to the right. The Pousada is just to the right. You can always try to ask directions, most people know where it is.

Nice safe apartment, but very close to the Favela.

Cheap rooms where you have to climb up over 100 stairs to get up there. Supermarket just around the corner, friendly staff. The ceiling of the house is quite low, so you have to be continuously cautious not to hit your head. Breakfast buffet is very small but delicious, sight is also quite beautiful from the room under the roof even though you don't have the same breathtaking panoramic views of the Copacabana beach like from other places in Rio.
The mattress is a little bit hard. I laid one on the other so it was much softer, when you are two people in a room you cannot do that of course.

Peaceful Favela

I stayed there during a business stop-over. I stayed in the apartment and had more than I need. Good sleep, clean.....

Very good experience  

Being two blonde (=very touristy looking) girls with no Portugese skills we were a little hesitant about the location, but trusting the previous reviews was absolutely worth it! We stayed in a fourth floor private room for four nights, and would recommend it anytime: the hostel itself feels secure and all the staff do their best to help even though we didnt share a mutual language with all of them.

The surroundings are ok (we walked sometimes back even at night-time), a few curious looks here and there but overall didnt feel any more insecure than in other parts of the central area. Of course normal precautions are recommended (as everywhere); know your way around and be prepared to guide taxi drivers up the hill as quite a few of them didnt recognize the exact address.

Breakfast was delicious including fresh fruits and juices, bread & toppings, and home-cooked eggs and sausages + great coffee. Wifi worked well, always warm water and good AC and a fan. On top of everything, we will NEVER forget the view (try to book a room from upper floors - ours had an ocean view even from the shower).

Unforgettable stay with warm service

Good things: 1) the receptionist speaks English 2) free wifi; 3) I was not killed despite favelas around; 4) subway can be reached by foot if you are insistent.
Bad things: 1) very cheap pillows and beds, which are difficult to sleep on; 2) noise outside up to 1-2 AM; 3) the breakfast is pretty modest, no choice at all; even considering modest price of the hotel; 4) if you get by taxi, you will pay 30-40 reais on top of your expected bill for going 500m uphill.
