Don't plan on communicating with reservations prior to your arrival.  I have tried.  I'm attending a conference at the university in the summer and wanted to inquire about staying a couple extra nights.  A month ago, I started leaving phone messages at the extension for "community life," (because they were not answering their phone during business hours).  No response.  Finally, last week I got a person on the phone there who gave me another extension for "reception."  They could not answer my question.  They said I needed to talk with someone else, who was not in.  But they promised if I called during business hours the next day, someone would be there.  They also promised that if I emailed reservations, someone would respond.  No luck!  Called the next day during business hours ... no answer. Left a message at more than one extension.  No call back.  Emailed.  No response.  Another day later, I called again and spoke to reception.  No the person I need to speak with is not there again, and will not be back for several days.  I'm not sure what is going on there, but clearly they don't feel the need to respond.  Maybe they don't need the business?  I have finally made reservations at a nearby hotel.  I imagine the experience will probably be more satisfactory in every way.

No communication

What an expierence !!!!!….my husband and I were used to a hotel facility but our friend booked this university room and it suit our situation .   We travelled all over every day and then we went back to this place to shower or relax or call it a night .Rooms were a good size the rooms have two bedrooms one big bathroom and kitchen. As for Ottawa it is AMAZING so much to do and see ….I recommend the parliament ,history surrounds you ,the downtown and  market and restaurants I/ We will DEFINITELY visit again .

Ottawa  Getaway

Convenient location within walking distance to Parliament Hill and Byward Market but really needs a fresh coat of paint. Booked a two-room unit and it was just under 300 for a night, pretty steep for what you get but still cheaper than a hotel in peak season. Just keep in mind that you’re staying in a student dorm, so temper your expectations. Check in and out was quick and easy, and the place was clean. Nice view over Ottawa river. 
No frills for those looking for a bed and not much else. 

Great location but needs a major refresh

I wavered as to whether to give this 3 stars as the danger here, is that you are comparing it with hotel standards. This seems to have been a former hotel and the initial arrival is bewildering. Going into the underground car park finds that (despite contrary signage inside) that it is run as a separate commercial operation. The lift (escalator) to the lobby area finds you the other side of a glass door to the lobby, which won't open. This door, which has "automatic" signs on has been disabled; never mind there are emergency exists which you can use to transport all your luggage outside, around the corner of the block via the sidewalk and back in to the reception lobby. I find it hard to accept this miserable experience, undertaken in 38 degrees of heat is what they are marketing here and so this gets 2 stars. The rooms are okay, you'd never accept them from a modern chain hotel, but they were clearly once part of quite a nice hotel and the overall cleanliness, I emphasise, was A1. The shower was actualy excellent. Location has its plusses and minuses. It is near Byward Market (4 blocks) but the street scene otside the hotel was unattractive. If you are in a big group where price is paramount, you might consider this, as it is clean and near downtown.

Rideau Residence - 290 Rideau Street

We were a large and noisy group of ladies who stayed at the U of Ottawa residences for our cycle tour.  The rooms are not cheap, $160.00 a day but they are clean and the beds were comfortable for everyone.  We had no common room on our floor and there is only one in the building on the ground floor and is reserved for students so we had to congregate in the tiny lobby near the elevators on our floor.  Our rooms had no hairdryers, glasses or Kleenex.  The staff was friendly and helpful but often could not answer our questions or were misinformed.  This may be a good spot for couples or for a twosome but not really adequate for groups.
