Iv stayed at this hotel for a week and I can say it's been lovely. Met some really cool people staying here and the staff have gone out there way to help me have a lovely time in Rio. And a big thanks to, Jessica and nelson :)

actually, I don't even stay there. I've book but then when I arrive there's was a problem with my room so I'll have to wait... nobody even offer to keep my bags. They just let me siting with all my stuff waiting them solve the problem (meanwhile i saw a cockroach at the reception). After more than a hour waiting, I just canceled and go find another hostel.

The first day I stayed at SunRio the electricity was turned off so I was shipped to another hostel.At the SunRio the matresses were thin from overuse so expect to wake up with a bad back.One of the workers was nice but it doesn´t make for the attitude of the others.The breakfast was not so nice to be kind.When I tried to speak to the owner about my complaints,instead of talking to me when she was there she wrote me an email but didn´t allow us to use the computer so I don´t know what she had to say.Such is the irony of this place.As there are hostels on either side of this one that are twice as good at half the price I chose to leave.

My experience at sunrio hostel

My boyfriend and I stayed in this hostel as it was recommended by the company we booked our flights through (STA travel). We were encouraged to book with this hostel as it was a little cheaper, and in the quieter, safer Botafogo. Upon arriving, I instantly regretted this decision.

The staff were its biggest let down. The rudest was a lady who did the day shift everyday. Asking her a question only led to her rolling her eyes and acting as though you were wasting her precious time, as she was in the middle of scrolling through her facebook. 
Asking for directions or how long it would take to get somewhere or where somewhere was was an absolute joke, not only was she hesitant and moody about giving any information, but she knew so little about the local area that sometimes our questions were met with scowls and shrugs...

Many staff members only spoke portuguese, which made it very difficult if they were doing the shift and we had problems. Another man was very friendly, but again, gave us no information, help and had no knowledge of the local area.

They advertise all of these facilities they apparently have, yet when you get there, you are told nothing about any of them. And, the most annoying part, as a pair of backpackers with a limited amount of time and money in Rio and wanting to get the most out of it... since we had so little help from the hostel, the internet was our next biggest resource - well, usefully their computer was broken for the whole week we were there... and their wifi wasn't working on my boyfriend's phone. We needed to contact a company to find out how to book a tour, and so upon politely asking if I could check on the reception computer very quickly I was told 'not for staff use'.
Great. Shockingly poor service for a hostel which advertises internet/computer use and wifi, and which also isn't exactly cheap. 

Yes, breakfast was very basic, bread rolls with ham and cheese, but there was also coffee, biscuits and fruit. And the rooms did start to smell as there were no outside windows. Very cramped and strangely shaped too.

However, it IS close to the main street of Botafogo and the Metro, so in terms of accessibility to Botofogo transport, it's perfect. Unfortunately though, Botofogo is more somewhere to stay than to see; you can't even go in it's waters as the bay is polluted.

We had both just never felt like such inconveniences being guests at a hostel in this way before.
Simply awful.

So, if you want to go to the least friendly and useful hostel around, definitely choose Sun Rio.

Rude & unhelpful staff, & a poor introduction to Rio

Being 2 young English girls jut landing after a 12 hour flight we hoped for some of that super friendly Brazilian spirit that everyone told us about. Nada.   Found ourselves squeezed into a tiny room with too many people in it. Door with a dodgy lock and 3/4 rooms sharing one dingy unclean bathroom and toilet.  Breakfast was a half assed attempt at 'a selection of meats and cheese' with some bread rolls.  Got the feeling that the staff weren't keen to help us discover the city, giving us vague and brief help. All seemed very reluctant to speak English with us! 
Location was poor for both nightlife and cuisine and beach day trips. 
All in all, ended up feeling lonely, overwhelmed and almost unwelcome.  Definitely not recommened for people looking for a social, friendly hostel.
