On the occasion of a bike ride along the canal, we had hoped to make a stop at this establishment, but the unfortunate reception we received encouraged us to continue our journey.

We would have loved to try!

We only stayed one evening in this inn. It is an out of season place. We arrive at a country bistro where a warm atmosphere breaks out. The room is simple but spacious with an excellent bed. The bathroom is unusual and small but it fulfils its function. A simple but once again excellent breakfast. A short service given the price of the room and breakfast.

Atypical and charming

We only made a quick stop at this inn. We didn't eat on the spot, so I won't comment on breakfast or dining. As for the room, it was simple. The bathroom has no charm: a plastic block in Formula One style. Practical but ugly. TV available. Good literature. We hear the train passing, but few trains luckily. We wanted to leave early at seven o'clock.

A flash of lightning

Stephen and Nelleker work hard to keep everyone well fed and happy. The rooms are air-conditioned and a fair size with wetroom type shower/toilet. There are intriguing decorations in the house - the downstairs toilet needs to be seen to be believed! 

The building is in a very quiet place next to the Canal De Berry and the intriguing Canal De Berry museum which is well worth a visit especially as you get a clever audioguide which tells you everything in your own language - very useful for people like us who only have school French. 

Nelleker does all her own cooking for breakfast, lunch and evening meals so the restaurant can't be any closer. Because of the excellence of the meals it isn't worth looking for anywhere else. There is a village a few kilometres away with an InterMarche for cheaper petrol. 

We used the Auberge as a stopping off place on our drive from Calais to Le Somail as it is roughly half way and close to the A71. Interestingly, Stephen and Nelleker are friends of Dirk and Inge in Le Neptune where we stayed in Le Somail. When we got to Le Somail, about half an hour after we arrived Dirk came to say that Stephen had rung to check we had arrived safely! Try getting that level of customer care in the UK!!

For anyone on a touring holiday or wanting a base for cycling/walking, then this would be for you as well as for the "commuters" en route to a further place like us! Note, coming from Calais you can save a small fortune on tolls by going via Rouen rather than the Paris route - relatively quiet traffic for almost the whole journey though it does add about 30mins.

Place to stay in Central France

When you enter the house you know by the decoration and layout that you will be fine.The layout of the room, the colors, the bathroom like in a boat, the environment, the view of the canal.All this place speaks to us about holidays.The breakfast on the sunny terrace by the canal.And above all the quality of hospitality and the extreme kindness of the owners.Imagine that for Mother's Day every customer was offered a rose...We felt during this long weekend that we were invited to a friend's house.

The Magnette Hostel: The Art of Friendship

After a two-hour walk, we stumble upon this little inn; the hot wine is delicious; the inn is full of books and other games; the reception is simple and warm! briefly, a very nice little break...

A very nice surprise.

It's a very nice place along the Berry Canal. Very nice free bike loan to enjoy the trail. Very clean room.

Hostel as before...

Great stop over, lovely hosts, comfy and fun place. Warm welcome tasty food, cold beer and good wine available. Beside a canal the auberge is very striking olde world style. It's quiet but has all you need for a short break.

Friendly quirky and comfy home style place with great hosts

We stayed at the Auberge Magnette enroute to the Cevannes, we were greeted by the owner who's first words were "Hello, you look like you need a beer!". The room was extremely comfortable, dinner was fantastic and the owners very engaging and humorous. The motorbikes were securely garaged behind the property. The location is very tranquil with the opportunity to stroll or cycle along the canal towpath next to the property. We choose to sit in the bar and talk motorbikes to the other guests and locals. The place is so good, we've booked in for our return journey!

A warm welcome from the patrons awaits you from your arrival at this beautiful country inn near the Berry Canal, which is undoubtedly the attraction of this place and the beauty of the place that attracted this Dutch couple 13 years ago, the interior is warm and the new outdoor terrace overlooking the canal will be ideal this summer to taste the excellent crispy and light fries served at the entrance menu at 14.90€ followed by a sweetly savory chicken and either a plate of cheese or a dessert, it is simple and tasty, a small map of Central Valley Chilean wines which is made on 18€ in a short bill of sympathetic rivers and follows the wines of the canal...
