Everything would have been fine if we had Wi-Fi, but we'd have to wait for the fiber (in 2021?): the new operator is more economical but less efficient. The price of the rooms hasn't dropped though. We've seen the beautiful Marans chickens but not the eggs...

All right, but...

Charlène welcomed us warmly, and we enjoyed the room, the private terrace, the quiet and the generous breakfast with the real orange juice and the homemade jams and yogurts.

I'm glad we stayed here.

Very well-maintained guest room where you can find comfort and tranquility. A cozy breakfast with homemade jams. A swimming pool in a green setting. I especially enjoyed the opportunity, without extra cost, to accept our little chihuahua. Its geographical location allows you to visit La Rochelle, Ré Island and other nearby sites.

We are always happy to return to the barbecue cottage with family near the cottage we are going to visit! we are always very well received by Charlène, the garden is very beautiful as well as the different terraces of the rooms and the rooms themselves! A generous lunch, with pressed orange juice every morning, coffee, tea, homemade yogurt, homemade jams too, croissants and bread! Nice frame at the edge of the Sèvre and supermarket accessible on foot! I highly recommend this guest house!

A warm and welcoming home


And so to Marans in the Vendée where we stayed in a chambre d’hôte,  Barbecane. The property was easy to find along a narrow road on the north bank of an arm of the Sevre Niortaise.We were warmly greeted by madame who showed us to our large ground floor room with shower and lobby room near the entrance to the property. We were also greeted by her friendly dog which, having examined us and our car - both of which must have smelt of our own dog that we'd kennelled for our holiday - promptly sat down near us while we had a refreshing beer. We had booked dinner in advance because we feared we might have arrived too late in Marans for local restaurants, especially as it was the end of the tourist season. For dinner at Barbecane we had a delicious farci charentais which was apparently based on a family recipe, followed by roast salmon and veg, and a carafe of local white charentais wine … finished with ice-cream. Our stay here for several days was most comfortable and welcoming with our host giving us a lot of helpful suggestions on restaurants and places to visit in the marais and flavoursome breakfasts with good coffee everday.


A Marais Haven

We had a very pleasant ten-day stay in Barbecue last August in the guest room. The setting is nice, relaxing, and well maintained. Charlene is charming and thoughtful. We enjoyed the breakfast served on the terrace and the good homemade jams. The swimming pool space is nice and very pleasant. We recommend.

On a business trip for two weeks, I was able to benefit from everything available, the place is quiet and the owner is very kind and available.

Nice ride.

When we arrived by bicycle, we enjoyed being able to put them in a garage. This B&B is well located, on the one hand opposite the canal and on the other a few minutes from the city centre. But the few disappointments are as follows: We arrived at 4:55 pm and the cleaning of the rooms was still going on. We felt and realized that we had arrived a little too early..

We are one of the couples mentioned above (and deported to a ghetto 2 km away), and even if the place, the pool, and the cafe offered are positive points, nonetheless, the non-existent excuses and a real dishonesty to the regulations must lead people to flee this place!

This Chambres d'Hotes is situated 50yds off the main road to La Rochelle,in a peaceful garden by a canalised river,where you can hire boats.
We have stayed here many times and we are always made to feel welcome by Charlene and her friendly happy dog .The house itself  is mainly one storey with the up stairs being a separate gite.   The rooms are not large but they are nicely decorated ,there is a shower room  with a  separate toilet and everything is  spotless .Outside each room is an area of decking with table and chairs and a parasol and it is so peaceful to sit here surrounded by the lovely garden,with a few chickens in the distance and the friendly dog sitting at your feet .If the weather is cold a heater is always provided in your room.  In the mornings madame serves a leisurely breakfast ,if that is what you want ,of fresh bread and croissant,with cold   meats and cheese,and homemade jams.Coffee,tea or chocolate is served to drink.
  The Pool is a good size  with chairs around it,and there is a barbeque area with plenty of cooking space for people to create their meals if they wish to and there are tables and chairs and parasols here also. 
 There is a big well stocked  supermarket  about 100 yards away,and several restaurants in about 250 yds.
    The area is great for cycling around,and further afield  the towns of La Rochelle,Surgeres, and Niort are all interesting,The surrounding villages and chateaux are well worth exploring.
