What to say about this place. For starters it’s not a hotel but more of a home stay. The rules are ridiculous, I think a lot of other reviewers state this. The owners conveniently don’t understand even with google translator. I think the rule about leaving your key behind is so they can turn off your heater every time you go out which is what happened to us until I stopped leaving the key which is fine but the house is not heated so things are pretty chilly.  There is no kettle, or hot water in the taps. Showering is not allowed before 1600. The list goes on. The positives........ hmmmmm there is a safe in the room and a bed at the end of the day if that is all you are after.

This is a small family run guesthouse.
Pros: Rooms are clean, mostly spacious and has the essentials.  Communal toilets, sinks and bath are clean and generally well equipped.  Breakfast is decent (but you need to book directly with them).  There is a nearby shuttle bus stand and the shuttle service is free, it takes ppl up to the gondola.  It is only walking distance if you are not in your gear.

Cons: We had a big group traveling together, the overall experience we had with the hosts was surprisingly negative since Japanese people tend to be very welcoming and friendly.  The owners speak very little English, which is expected in Japan, and we are used to that.  However, they had many rules and were very rigid about the way things were done.  In many instances, they seemed quite unhelpful and occasionally were rather rude and would display great annoyance.  There is a strict curfew of 11pm which we were happy to respect.  There is also a loud speaker announcement to ensure all guests wake up by 7:30am for breakfast.  Drinking water is not provided after 8pm and the water and boiler actually gets manually removed beyond that time.  When we asked them to help us call to make dinner reservations as most restaurants only speak Japanese, they strongly refused.  There is no hot tap water or central heating in the corridors making it quite cold if you want to go to the bathroom at night.  There are strict operating hours for showers and bath. It is not actually within the Nozawa village for those who want the village experience, but it is only a 5-10 minutes walk.  

Overall, this place provides all the basics and location is reasonable.  But be prepared for many rules, and unless you can comply to them, the hosts may not be very happy.

Not for foreigners

There are plenty of other options available in Nozawa other than this lodge. There is a curfew that no one tells you about. No ensuite, no access to the public bathroom until 4pm. Very archetic. A load speaker announcement goes off at 7.30am in Japanese to herd everyone into breakfast. Give it a big miss.

Do not bother.

If you like to feel the family atmosphere and kindness, here is the best.
Family small hotel with amazing breakfast and if you want to have dinner I really suggest; It's just 1 min by the shuttle bus stop for the slopes and close to the village of Nozawa Onsen, only 5 min walking.
Staff is great, always helpful and so kind.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 12 nights in Mominoki @ Nozawa Onsen. Our hostess Kyoko was warm & welcoming. The ryokan is cosy, clean & quiet, while the home cooking is delicious & worth staying in for. The location is perfect for the ski shuttle [approx. 100m] & all the 13 public onsen are within easy walking distance as are the shops & restaurants.
