Compass Backpacker

This hostel is lovely to stay in for a short or longer time.  The showers are hot, the rooms are clean and cool, but the beds are a bit hard but then a lot of hostel beds are hard.  It was quiet inside and little traffic outside.  The area was where I wanted to be right in the middle of the walled city of Chiang Mai with cool cafes and restaurants, temples within walking distance and all the tours I could want.  It had lockers and free water and bananas and computer in front.  The fruit market was down the lane along with lots of other hostels.

I only stayed one night here but the staff were so helpful and friendly I would stay here again when I go back to a Chaing Mai. The beds are a little hard, but the dorm room was really clean and there was lots of space, I only shared with one girl in a dorm of four. The bathroom was clean and the shower was really hot which is positive. But a high point is the staff, they went out of their way to help me find everything in the city that I wanted and also about all the different ways to get back to Bangkok.

Really helpful staff

Quiet, relaxed hostel in lovely area

Pros:
- Good location, near lots of restaurants.
- Clean mattresses.
- Reliable Wifi.

Cons:
- The owner's (presumed) irrational fear of toilet paper and its supply.
- Frequently unmanned reception. They supplied a number but not everyone has international sim cards.
- Beds so hard you'd wish you were on the floor. Squeaky too.

We paid 400 baht for 2 beds in a 4 bed dorm. Beds were horrifically uncomfortable, rock hard mattresses. For that price you'd expect towels but we had to buy towels separately. There's no vibe, you wouldn't want to stop for more than 1 night. We paid just over half the price down the road at Diva which is an amazing hostel. Haven't really got anything good to say about this one apart from the location is good and there was soap. Also we couldn't get hot water, think you may have to pay extra for that too. It's a rip off really for such a basic dorm.

Too expensive for what it is

I stayed here for a total of 4 nights in an all female dorm room with 4 beds.  The rooms were small but tidy and clean and you had your own locker.  The beds however, were really uncomfortable, The mattresses were hard and the beds made horrible noises if you were to make the slightest movement in them.  You also have to make your own bed when you arrive... Not so great when you arrive later on at night and your on top bunk!!
The sheets were clean, but were never cleaned thereafter, I was fine because I only stayed there for 4nights, but for those who are planning on staying for longer- it might be a problem.
There were only two main bathrooms (with toilet and shower in the same room)which were always so dirty! It really put me off going to the bathroom sometimes!  Downstairs was a separate toilet as well as as seperaste shower which was cleaner, but a pain to keep going down to when you're staying upstairs.  No towels included!!

The location is very central to lots of restaurants and shops and a short walk to tha phae gate.  
The communal area at the front of the hoastel was small and rather hostile to be honest, I only ever sat in there when I had to wait for my friends or when I needed internet and I didn't want to be in my room.

Now, everyone has said how nice and helpful Egypt- the lady at the front desk-was, to us, she was extremely rude for e.g when we asked her about where something was on the map; she shunned us away, and ignored us, and at one point she told us to wait- because she was busy checking her bank account!?!.. It was actually unbelievable the way she spoke to my friend and I!!.. She would hardly speak to us and only really spoke to us when we paid for our stay.  The rudest woman I've come across so far in my trip.  

I agree this place is convenient for its location and super cheap too- but just be warned you really do get what you pay for here! There are plenty of other options avasilabe for the same price where the service is much better and you get a fair worth for your money!!..

Also, on the weekdays, The kindergarten next door sings the national anthem suiper early and suiper duper loud(via microphone's), and the front desk and hostel shuts after 11pm until 9am.
